I don't think so. he mentioned that he almost got a gig to make rants about video games in the style of Dennis Leary and that he wanted to do some sort of more comprehensive comedy show once. the first one didn't pan out and the second one got shot down by Ryan. I think the focus was always on doing games press for both of them, the comedy & stage skills were just a bonus. a lot of it also comes from the fact that Jeff was a self-admitted dirtbag back in his teens and early 20s who largely partied for most of the time. dude bullshitted himself into the legendary "pizza waitress apartment" because it seemed like an opportunity to do dumb shit.

There's a pretty clear difference between Alex during the older panels before Vinny had moved to New York and the more recent ones after GBEAST had been established. He's gotten so much more comfortable and has kinda fallen into the role of a straight man to everyone else's wackiness, it works a lot better than him trying to force himself to play up his reactions like he does here.
