Hello David! Very informative video! Can you provide an update on your experiences a year later in your PhD?
Wow - great video!!
I truly hate CPE. 😥
Why?
Hi David! Thank you so much for this video. I am planning to apply to CPE residency in the Fall! I am looking all around the country because I am pretty open to locations. I would prefer a Level 1 Trauma Center, an academic center, or a pediatric hospital? I too love the intensity of those environments. How many residencies is typical to apply to? I have not found any information about that so far!
Very helpful video, I wish I had seen this years ago. My CPE supervisors for my residency did not offer me the best education. 2 were going through divorces from marriages that were decades long, they had checked out, the third one was racist and I have met residents of color who had him too and we all recognized it (the other two supervisors knew that about him but totally let it be because as I said, they had "checked" out and they feared losing their jobs as he was very well connected with top tier leadership in the hospital) May I ask how I can make up for loss education? The two "very nice" supervisors, just waved me off, "you're great" and I realized this was because I do present strong and competent but I also know that they didn't challenge me enough due to their own overwhelm and tiredness..
How is ACPE “the Standard” when there is no organization, body, or committee that decides what “the standard” in spiritual care actually is? The way in which ACPE is using the phrase is strictly advertising. Also, you clearly seem to be steering people to ACPE and APC. You fail to mention to your audience there are two DOE recognized fully accredited CPE programs in the US-ACPE and ICPT. It is also incorrect to imply that one has to have ACPE in order to considered for hire by most facilities. According to the United States Department of Education it is an equal opportunity offense to not provide job candidates a chance at consideration based on the school they attended as long as that school or center is recognized by the United States Department of Education. If this happens to a potential employee an EEO should be filed within the state posthaste. I will, however, admit your video is well done and your dog very cute.
Thanks, Scott. He is a cute puppy :) I appreciate your compliments about the video. This was my first one so, admittedly, I have much to learn. In terms of the content, I am speaking from my experience in this video and trying to stay out of the internecine battles between our organizations. I have a great deal of respect for chaplains and educators who are certified by CPSP, SCA, etc. There is not a sufficient evidence base to say which organization trains the best chaplains or even if any of our organizations are providing quality education. It simply hasn't been studied. So any statement or name we give an organization is only someone's opinion. Congratulation to ICPT on being recognized by the US DOE. We all have to assume they require some quality control that is based on evidence. I'd love to see a day where we take the approach that "all boats rise with the tide." In other words, let's work together to train quality spiritual care providers to help heal hurting people. We seem to be a long way off from that, unfortunately, but one can still hope.
