Colloquial Hindi and Urdu is the same language written in different scripts. So, to say that they developed side-by-side is wrong as they are just the same language. Here is how Hindi/Urdu came into being. Sanskrit ---> Shaurseni Praakrit (the Praakrit of north-western India) ---> Khadiboli (the native dialect of Delhi and immediate surroundings) ---> import of loanwords from Persian, Arabic and Turkish during Delhi Sultanate and Mughal eras ---> Khadiboli absorbs around 30-35% higher vocabulary of these three foreign languages, chiefly Persian ---> remains commonly spoken language of the people of Delhi and immediate surroundings from the 13th onwards (and is named Hindavi or Hindi or Dehlavi or Rekhta or Hindustani, etc.), while the official language of the empires in Delhi remains Persian ---> during the Later Mughal Period in the 18th century, its usage spreads as more poets start writing in this native Hindi/Urdu language ---> standardization happens of this colloquial language and it gets another name Urdu ---> Urdu poets start using more higher vocabulary from Persian, Arabic and Turkish and continue writing in the Perso-Arabic script, while a parallel track of poets also emerges that purges the foreign loanwords and opts for native Sanskrit and Praakrit words and writes in the native Devanagari script After the Partition of India, Standard Hindi with higher vocabulary derived from native Sanskrit and Praakrit, and written in Devanagari script becomes the official language of India, while Standard Urdu with higher vocabulary derived from Persian, Arabic and Turkish, and written in Perso-Arabic script becomes the official language of Pakistan. The common language in northern India, however, continues to be the mixture that it used to be, with native and well as loanwords used interchangeably. Therefore, Hindi and Urdu have the same origin (Sanskrit through Shaurseni Praakrit and Khadiboli). So, they have the same grammar structure and basic language rules traced to their mother language chain. Their higher vocabulary and script are what sets them apart, though.
