Elephanta Caves{Mumbai} Pls see description
The Rashtrakuta rulers built the Elephant Caves in
Western India between the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The caves are carved into the high basalt rock walls of Elephanta Island also known as the
Island of Gharapuri.
Most of the sculptures inside the caves were defaced by Portugese, who used them for target practice, in the 17th century.
In 1987 Elephanta caves are under the observation of Archeological Survey of India.
