Descent into the 'Golden Age'. One of New Zealands richest mines
Carrying on from last weeks video, this time I have brought a friend and a rope to help climb down into this steep adit. Starting in 1885, this mine was one of the Waiotahi group of workings, in the hills behind Thames, New Zealand

The mine you come to an end at 6:40 is the Talisman no7 level, it was mined on and off through until about the 1970s or 80s. Thats what the plastic pipe is from that you see, its believed that collapse was delibrately created to stop people going down further. Im wanting to get back up to look at no6 level above, there is some steel ore chutes in it apparently according to what Merv told me, but its apparently quite deep with mud at the entrance. at 18:00 that narrow stope can actually be navigated through and you walk into the other side where you are standing at 30:00 where the bars are by the track, that ladder that is there goes down a long way into the no8 level by means of a second shaft and ladder, apparently its since collapsed in there so access into no8 is no longer possible.

Funny story, we were on a kayaking trip and decided to explore the mines and asked a local guy and he told us about the 1 across the river as the others are not that long. We started of with 7 of us and as things got dodgyer people started dropping off. The mine is slopping 70deg with a track running accross it and heaps of slips that take out the track but u can get past. You don't want to fall at any stage as it goes down far at 70deg. A few bits to jump across where u can't afford to fall. @StevenAverage 28 днів тому

Thanks for watching. Id be lying if I said it wasnt dangerous. There have been many mines I take a few steps into and decide the risk isnt worth it to continue. Collapse probably isnt my main concern, the mines have remained largely intact for well over 100 years, so I hope its unlikely theyll collapse just because I went in there. Im more concerned with falling down shafts or through the roof of a stope. Also miners were sometimes less than careful about where they left old unused dynamite. I gave up kayak fishing to do this and oddly enough, the mines seem safer
