I got 'into' coffee as a hobby in 2017 and it quickly drew me in - brewing espressos, upgrading coffee machines, buying more coffee equipment than I really need but enjoying it more and more!
Here I'll be sharing with you my journey through the coffee world - accessories, machines, coffee beans, roasters, tips I've found useful and no doubt things I do wrong.

It looks hideous…
There is a much easier way to remove the bottom burr: it should be the last thing you remove at the very end after you’ve already removed the chute. With the chute out of the way you can see from the front that there is a small gap between the bottom burr and the bottom motor plate. Simply insert a small slotted screwdriver between the burr and bottom plate then gently twist - the burr will pop right off.
Thanks for sharing Matt. Removing the chute last leaves the delicate, relatively short wires attaching the chute to the grinder supporting the weight of the chute. These joints are quite delicate and are easy to accidentally break at the solder joint. And if you are using a screwdriver while the chute is detached with the wires hanging, it's so easy to accidentally pull the wires and potentially break the contact. This is one of the reasons I actually wouldn't suggest removing the bottom burr now unless you have reason to (as I did).
You can simply mark burrs before disassembly to not lose burrs alignment. Just mark each burr by carrier. And assemble same marks afterwards.
😊
Just to be sure, there is no need to re allign the burrs after that ?
Hi there, thanks for watching. I never did but take a look at my pinned comment. If you're concerned or want to be safe, don't remove the burrs, just clean around them.
Thank you so much really!

Lift the bottom burr from the front. Much easier. You need to remove the front cover anyway
Thanks - I'd leave the burrs in place now and do a 'dry clean' of them and the chamber/chute using brushes and a vacuum. I removed the bottom burr because I had been using the grinder for around 12 months without cleaning the inside and so I felt like there were coffee grounds underneath it that needed removing. If there's no reason to believ you have grounds underneath, it's easier and safer to leave the burrs in place. Hello! Thank you very much for the video, the process is very well understood. I had to open the upper burr since the grinder had blocked and it did not make coffee. I simply cleaned upper part and replaced the three screws. When grinding I saw that point 0 had changed from 5 to 4, do you know if that is normal or have I done something wrong? Thank you!
No problem, thanks for watching. Yes it can change. As long as everything else is working as normal, you're good. Next time, to minimise this, leave the burrs in place and just do a 'dry clean' of them and the chamber/chute using brushes and a vacuum. Do you have to turn the burrs all the way coarse before moving pieces off the grinder?
No I didn't, why?
I’m beginning to regret my purchase of this thing, there’s enough retention in it after a week to make a 10 coffees, the grounds find there way into the electronics they get everywhere, tried single dosing with bellows it’s not been much help. Just save up for a niche or a better flat burr folks the specialita is a capable grinder but not worth the headache.
Yes there is retention but this version of the Specialita in the video is not marketed or positioned as a zero, or even low, retention grinder. So the Niche Zero is not an apples to apples comparison. It doesn't even have a hopper! Many people don't want to deal with single dosing, so the Niche wouldn't be an option for them. I've not seen the grinds get into the electronics. I've tried bellows as you might have seen in my other videos. It absolutely helped me. Maybe there's an additional issue causing retention problems for you. But yes I understand your frustrations. This was a good grinder for me to start with. I've moved to a dedicated single dose grinder now. There's a video on that too on my channel (I think I called it best single dose grinder under $1,500). Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, thank you, but remember you're British... It's spanner, not wrench. 😉

Thank you for this video!! I purchased a new Mignon Specialita recently and have been using it for about 6 weeks. I’ve been largely using it to grind my beans fine, at setting 1 or 1.5, and it has been working well up until this week. Earlier this week I changed the setting to 5 to get a coarse grind for my French press, which worked. Today, I tried to set the grinder back to 1.5, however the grounds continue to be very coarse. Given this is a new grinder, I assume the burrs done need to be cleaned, but I’m new to using burr grinders and am not sure how to fix it. Would you be able to provide any guidance on this?
From the sounds of it, I'd say you just need to put a few more beans through as some of the coarser grounds may still be coming through. Thoughts on using compressed air or an air compressor to clean this machine?
Hi there, I haven't tried although a few people have suggested this. For me it would be too messy - imagine the fine grinds everywhere! If you can do it outside, maybe. But I think a brush, cotton buds and vacuum work well, so that's what I use.
@@coffeewithalex4379 OK, thanks for the reply. I'm going to try it outside next month. I'll update you on how it goes :)
hello, I couldn't get the bottom burr out, it's like glued to the carrier. I am afraid to damage the axle and alignment if i use too much force, any advice? thx
Hi, yes I'd leave it and clean everything else. It's not absolutely necessary and some say they have alognment issues although I didn't. So yes, leave the bttom burr screwed in and dry clean it in situ (brush, cotton buds and vacuum).
Wow, this is a very detailed video. I didn't get this far in cleaning my grinder. I'll need to give it another go!

Very good video. I followed this after my machine stopped grinding but unfortunately it haven't been able to get it grinding again. I think the motor is kaput; a bit disapponting after 3 years use with regular cleaning.
Thanks Paul. Such a pity it's kaput - that is disappointing, especially if you've been cleaning it out regularly (I'd understand it stopping working if you hadn't). It might be worth getting in touch with Eureka just to say you've only used it for 3 years. You never know they may even suggest a way you can get it working again.
Sure if you want your coffee setup to look like a public toilet, then ya, go this route
😂 I hadn't seen it that way! This is just an inexpensive way to do it and I made this video quite some time ago. There are now solutions made by Eureka that may do the job and don't look like a public toilet 😊
Perfect instructions for getting our Eureka Mignon as good as new again :)
Thank you Simone! Enjoy your newly cleaned grinder and of course the coffee 😀
Thank you so much. Very good explanations in a nice and friendly way.
😊 Thank you
Thank you! Such a helpful video
You're so welcome Natalia. I'm glad you liked it 😀
i see you take off the hopper very easily, i tried at the shop cannot
There's a screw that you tighten to hold the hopper in place but I always had it loose so that I didn't have to loosen it every time I wanted to remove the hopper.
looks like 3d printed
It was - I think i may have said that in the video. Thanks for watching
Can I pick your brains as I am getting nowhere with Eureka. Which model is your light blue grinder?
Hi, that one is older. It's a Eureka Mignon Mk2 (also known as Eurrka Mignon MCI).
@coffeewithalex4379 I apologise for asking because I have asked you before. I am having a problem with my grinder and it's also the MCI. It's worked flawlessly for 11 years and now started clogging up. Eureka in Italy can't tell me what to check for. Yesterday they mentioned the the ACE might need replacing but can I find this component in my machine???? No. They say its whe the gind is ejected but I cannot find this. Do you have something on your machine? I have replaced the burrs, thinking that might be the problem
Hmm I don't have either the Specialita or the MCI now. I do have a video I filmed but havent edited and it shows a removable piece of black plastic in the chute which I assume helps break up and help the flow of the coffee out of the chute. Do you see anything like that when you remove the chute?
@@coffeewithalex4379 nope tgere is no plastic piece. I am hoping that Eureka will be customer friendly. I will send them some photos on Monday
I trawled through some of the video I shot and found the piece - here's a screenshot of it for your reference share.getcloudapp.com/NQu5OEJW
What model is that blue Eureka grinder in the middle? It looks slimmer than the Specialita and other Eureka Mignon grinders.
Hi, that one is older. It's a Eureka Mignon Mk2 (also known as Eurrka Mignon MCI).
Can you give me a link to your review of Urnex Grindz to clean the burrs of the grinder?
Hi - It's embarrassing but I haven't made the video yet. Well I filmed it quite some time ago but haven't edited it yet. Sorry!
Thanks for the effort man This was super helpful
Thanks for watching Daniel! I'm glad it was helpful.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but I think you can remove the bottom burr easily but removing the chute first, then prying the burr out from the side where the chute was.
Definitely! Although, if it's kept clean you don't necessarily need to remove the bottom burr and some comments here say you shouldn't as it affects alignment. I didn't notice this but I just want to say that for anyone reading.
I put this off over a year, but was surprised how easy it was to do, and that the build-up was not much worse after two years' use.
I put it off for a long time too! For me though, I wanted to clean after that. I found if I left it too long between cleans I would notice it affect the taste of the coffee.
Wow. Ungainly, big, ugly. And less than effective. My preference is for the one that comes with their angled single doser. It has a gate, which allows you to regulate the flow of beans into the burrs in addition to controlling the popcorning, and it has a bellows.
Yes, that wasn't available at the time I made the video. Howeve this "modification" does improve upon the standard Specialita I used in the video.
Thank you so much! Just removed jam in my Mignon! :)
Always happy to help remove a jam my friend 👍
Useful video Alex..I did mine today but struggled a little with removing the chute/display part but otherwise it was pretty easy. Just make sure you have a flat bladed screwdriver the same width as the screw heads and voila. I did cheat by blowing mine out with the air line in my workshop and I also made sure the burrs didn't collide by gently turning the nut with my fingers rather that just operating from the mains.
Thank you! Ah you're lucky to have a workshop 😀
What Mignon is the blue grinder?
Hi Marek, that one is older. It's a Eureka Mignon Mk2 (also known as Eurrka Mignon MCI).
@coffeewithalex4379 have you got an ACE on the MCI?
I don't have the grinder any longer but I believe it had some kind of anti clumping although different from the Specialita
@@coffeewithalex4379 did it ever give you trouble?
@mbrylewski the blue MkII? No it worked ok, in fact it seemed more sturdily built and heavy than Specialita. But I enjoyed using the Specialita more and believe I got better espresso from it. I have a video I haven't edited yet with both grinders in.
Thanks, this helped a lot.
You're welcome. Im glad it helped!
What I learned from your use of the bellows is there is a surprisingly large amount of retention in this machine. This shows most reviews aren’t done in good faith. Very disappointing
Well this model wasn't sold as zero retention so I guess we should give it some slack. They have newer models that do say 'zero' retention although true zero is almost impossible. Did you see the grinder I've upgraded to? Even that has some retention. You can see it here ua-cam.com/video/5T-OGTZoIQM/v-deo.html What do you think?
can I please ask you what is you touching point and what number is you espresso range? I found out my espresso range is about 1 number from touching point. is that normal? for example touching is 0 and espresso somewhere to 1. Thanks!
Hi Vee - I actually don't have this grinder any more (you can see in my latest video what I replaced it with). I'll try and answer though: Of course it will differ between our grinders but that what you've said sounds about right if I remember correctly (touching is zero espresso may be around 1 to 2).
@@coffeewithalex4379 thanks
Great video Alex, Greatly appreciate it! 👍👍
Thank you Manuel 🙏 And thank you for subscribing.
Thanks for the video, my grinder was totally stuck and did not run anymore, now it does😀.
I'm so glad it helped you J T
I have cleaned my specailita twice now and have not had any issues. It was far easier to remove the burrs the second time both the screws and the lower burr was much easier to loosen and remove. When I replaced the burrs I cleaned the upper and lower carrier and polished with a microfiber cloth. When I went to retighten I tightened first till the screws all touched and then I tighetenend each screw a quarter turn till I did all and then another quarter turn all around. This ensures that the burrs are all uniformly tightened and helps keep alignment. My grind setting was only off slightly when I went. To pull a shot.
Great tip Allan - thank you. After a while, I stopped removing the burrs themselves. I think there was only coffee grounds underneath them initially because I didn't clean the grinder soon enough after getting it that it built up much more than it should have. So if you know you're cleaning it regularly, you can just leave the burrs in place and dry clean them with cotton buds, a brush and a vacuum.
@@coffeewithalex4379 both times I removed the burs I removed impacted fines from the bottom and the alignment of the machine changed slightly and I got better more consistent grinds. I would suggest to remove both and bottom burs on each clean.
I actually don't have this grinder now Allan but I'm glad the video helped. If you'd like to see what I replaced it with you can see it in the unboxing here ua-cam.com/video/5T-OGTZoIQM/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video! I had no idea how to clean it after it literally seized up on me! - I cleaned it in the meantime, and while I didn't weigh the old grounds, there were AT LEAST enough to make 4 single espresso!!! The chute was STUFFED SOLID! Was so compacted it didn't even fall out until I literally DUG it out! Bonus tip: If your dishwasher has a low temp option, just bung it all in there... (minus the base/electronics, of course). The 45° of the dishwater is way less than the 60°+ of the tap and less work! ;-)
Thank you for commenting! Wow - you had a LOT stuck in the chute. I hope the grinder's going well for you now. I had to periodically check how it was doing to ensure it wasn't getting a little clogged and affecting my shots - both in terms of inconsistent extraction times and flavour.
@@coffeewithalex4379 Still going strong! - I had a check just NOW, looked up the chute with light from mobile phone: I can see lots of grounds again already! Good call! - My plan: I will turn it on, give it a quick suck with the vacuum through the chute, check for clumps, suck again, see how that holds up. (Maybe 1 real cleaning for every 2 "mini" cleanings?)
I was eventually finding I needed to clear the chute out every couple of weeks to a month. Nice idea about the mini clean! Careful not to damage the clump crusher at the top of the chute. It's pretty delicate. I replaced it once or twice. Not because it broke but to see if it would improve the effectiveness of it.
Great video. Very thorough - thank you.
Thank you Stuart - I appreciate that. And thank for subscribing. What other coffee related videos would you like to see from me?
9:00 crazy idea here, what about turning the grinder upside down
I'm glad you admit it is a crazy idea. Try and you'll see why.
@@coffeewithalex4379 on 6:59 I also recommend using a socket, more confortable and no risk of damaging the sharp edges on the axle
But what is grinder setting???
I'm not sure what you mean. It'll be different for each and every grinder - even the same model.
what is the name of your eureka grinder in light blue? Can I apply the same steps to clean as the Eureka Mignon in this video? Thanks
Hi, that one is older. It's a Eureka Mignon Mk2 (also known as Eurrka Mignon MCI). Taking it apart to clean the burrs and chamber is different to the Specialita. But you can apply the same principles to cleaning inside. I would leave the burrs in situ for both grinders now and just dry clean them with a vacuum, cotton bud and brush. Hope that helps
Thanks so much sir! I started using Mignon Zero today for the first time. I set the grind level to 1 and after fist 20 grams or so the grinder stopped dispensing grounds. I was shocked to find brand new grinder malfunctioning on first day. I followed your instructions and found the powdered coffee grounds were clogged at the chute. After cleaning it all up my grinder is back to normal! I made two observations - 1. I set the grind level too fine for espresso. Which caused two issues - a. It clogged the grinder completely. b. With whatever grounds that I got after first grind, the espresso was too bitter. 2. Before opening grinder, my Zero point was exactly at 0. But after disassembly and reassembly, my Zero point shifted to 9. But I don't care if it does. I made second espresso shot with coarser grind setting and that made perfect espresso. I truly appreciate your help! Cheers.
Sorry for the delay! I just wanted to say thank you for saying thank you :-) And also thank you for sharing your observations, I know they'll be useful for others. Lesson learned: When getting a brand new grinder and you want to make espresso, open up the grind setting to a little coarser. Someone told me to put on the grinder and make turn the grind adjustment finer until you hear a very very very slight metal on metal sound (this is the sound of the burrs almost touching). Then make it a little coarser. Now you can try this setting for espresso and you might not be far off. You may not want to do this if you're worried it will damage your burrs. Thanks again!
Superb video! And this could work also for (almost) every mignon series, since their base is the same, right?
Thank you Ambrosius. I think the range of Mignon grinders are very similar, so yes you probably could use it for them too.
