Sheet To Tiller
United States
Приєднався 28 бер 2022
"Sheet To Tiller" is a channel dedicated to showing how much can be done with determination. Sheet To Tiller teaches us that we can manage long ocean passages without all the fancy gear, or even an autopilot/windvane. To me Sheet To Tiller is a mindset as much as a steering system. Fancy gear may make our lives and adventures easier, but they are not actually a necessity if we are determined to make something happen. Mirage is a 28 foot Cape Dory that I have sailed over 7,000 miles, I have sailed around 4,000 singlehanded using Sheet To Tiller alone. I hope this channel brings you useful knowledge, entertainment, and a few laughs. Above all, I hope that you learn it doesn't take a lot of money to get out there, it just takes hard work and determination.
Cape Dory 28 For Sale (Mirage is for Sale)
Cape Dory 28, Bluewater Sailboat, Singlehanded Sailing
I'm not done sailing, Just getting a different boat. I want a smaller boat. MORC design, preferably a Ranger 23 or similar, one trailer.
After three years and nearly 10,000NM I am putting MIRAGE up for sale. She is a Cape Dory 28, a boat known for its superb sea-keeping abilities and superior build quality. Cape Dory only used the best when they built these boats and it comes with all bronze sea cocks, portlights, and fittings. This means all metal fittings on the boat will last essentially forever with proper care.
I have sailed Mirage from Miami to Charleston to Key West to Abacos Bahamas to Georgetown Bahamas to Guatemala to Honduras to Cayman Islands to Key West to South Carolina. Roughly 10,000NM in total over the last 3 years. Our longest nonstop journey was 1,400 NM over a two-week sail from Georgetown to Guatemala.
She is a true bluewater boat set up for bluewater and single handing. I have upgraded the sail plan to handle gale force winds with a triple reef point in the main, and a storm jib can be flown from a Solent stay. Exterior oversized SS chainplates were added in 2023 to accept standing rigging if upsizing is desired, and the rig has been serviced and inspected often. Brand new Jabsco Toilet. Etc.
I was planning an Atlantic crossing in June of this year, but an exciting opportunity on the West Coast this summer changed my plans, so I am putting my Beloved MIRAGE up for sale. I am asking $9,800 but I am considering any offers, so it doesn’t hurt to throw me an offer and let me know what you might have planned. I have spent considerable money and effort getting Mirage into this condition, so it would be nice if someone who desires serious sailing will take over. There won't be a cheaper way into a boat this ready to go.
Mirage is currently powered by a Honda 8HP Saildrive longshaft outboard motor. This is perfect for the boat and will not cavitate even in heavy weather. The hard dodger is easily removed if you do not want it. It is useful for heavy weather. This is a very safe boat, I’m hoping to find someone who will take care of her and love her as I have. I wouldn’t sell her if I could take her with me to the West Coast.
Important Gear:
AIS Capable VHF Radio
Raymarine Smartpilot Tiller Pilot (Very Expensive and Nice Tiller Autopilot)
Yankee Jib
Storm Jib
NOTE: I am willing to accept (trades + cash), condition depending, 22-24 ft sailboats designed for MORC, specifically a ranger 23.
NOTE 2: I am willing to go down on price by removing some gear from MIRAGE such as the autopilot, since I will be purchasing another sailboat in the near future. Shoot me an offer! I might just say yes.
NOTE 3: I may be willing to deliver MIRAGE if travel expenses are paid for my return to South Carolina.
MIRAGE is currently in Lake Marion, SC in a Freshwater slip. It can stay in slip if needed.

Self Steering on a Sailboat without a Wind Vane or Autopilot

In this video my friend Eloi and I test Sheet to Wheel on his Sailboat. It was his first time using our self steering kit "Sheet To Tiller". There is definitely potential for Sheet To Wheel as a backup self steering system for cruisers on long ocean passages. Although the system does take more time to set up, in the event of an Autopilot Failure it could be extremely useful. Fatigue at sea coul...

great video. Thanks for showing the real heel on your passage
I'd like to know where she landed.
Nice boat! But I'll stick with my PY23. She takes me everywhere.
man, I totally would have bought one of your kits if you were still selling them.
nauticalsailor.com is a dead link as far as I can tell
Simple system, fair winds mate
What I do not fully understand: what will be the effect if the windspeed changes?
Who uses "Facebook" anymore? Not sure what facebook marketplace is but there is zero chance I would go to it. I think my parents have an account but no one I know has one.
The person who bought the boat, I think.
@@travistucker7317 ...grandpa must have found it. lol.. That site is so so old now that no one uses it. Nice boat though!
You’re an inconsiderate jerk for making a comment like that.
Nice! -- QUESTION -- What is the make and model of your sewing machine (you never said or showed the front so I can't tell what it was)?
Genius video. Really simplifies the entire exercise. Might I suggest a new video using a similar, simplified approach on the topic of what makes women tick. Thanks in advance.
For the self steering you can skip to 3:50
Your video is about as informative as a blank sheet of paper & if your going to talk on your vids talk in to the mic, half of what you are saying can't be heard.
I will take that into consideration. Thanks for your comment!
I sailed my Pearson Triton from American Samoa to Hawaii with only sheet to tiller steering due to my windvane being broken. It only worked when the wind was forward of the beam, but that didn't matter because it was a beat to windward the whole way!
That's awesome! What a wild trip that must've been.
I think this boat just sold.
Omg someone please buy this boat for me! I’m the most deserving gal ever
I love my cape dory I crossed the pacific on it no problems.
I learned it from Slocum....and I was doing this 35 years ago...some things don't change...
Awesome dude. Thanks
Awesome. Cool bird!!
Soothing
I used a sheet to tiller system for a 5000 mile voyage around the South Western Pacific nearly 50 years ago. Works better with a longish keel. If you use a storm jib as your steering sail then when the weather gets bad you already have your storm jib up and it still works to steer you. System doesn’t work downwind and certainly not under power. The little yellow bird was fantastic.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, downwind is tricky. I have gotten it to work broad reaching quite well. a beam reach is always a bear on my boat though.
do you use that on overnight passages?
Yes, I've used it mainly for long offshore sails. It works especially well upwind.
Do recall the name of this boat?
It DO go down! 😂
Content de voir Eloi et PETIT CHANTIER .Exellent systeme de tendeur ....et a moindre couts .
Fantastic video! I just received your book from Amazon. I'm anxious to apply your techniques on my Catalina 27.
Thank you for this video. I live on an Alberg 30 and have been using sheet-to-tiller self steering for several years. I sail single handed several times every week and still it took me many months and much trial and error practice to become proficient. This has become one of my most useful and rewarding seamanship skills. A shame is that a few hours of (unavailable) instruction could save months of trial and error learning. Sheet-to-tiller has also taught me to be a better sailor because now I am much more attentive to having a balanced helm and strive to use the rudder more as a trim tab than a barn door. BTW: speargun rubbers and wishbone inserts make excellent elastics.
Wishbone inserts🤔
Did you consider installing a composting toilet? If so, I'd like to know why you decided to go with the Jabsco vs composting. Thanks!
👍👍🙂
Gotta love those Cape Dories. I have had three; a 10', 30' and for the past 18 years a 36'. Cheers.
Watching you with the bird made my day. Very cool.
So honest and raw, thanks for sharing your journey
Thanks! It's something I enjoy doing
You are a machine! Well fine! Great watch! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you!
Hopefully here in the next couple months I will have my own boat. I really enjoy your content I hope you keep making more.
Yes, Mirage is in South Carolina for now, I'll be back out the end of November! good luck with your boat
Dude you had like, a Disney level interaction with that bird you fed it water out of a shell that was so kind I loved watching that ❤
yeah, it was wild lol
Thanks for this... going to buy your book. I too have a CD 28 and am hoping to avoid buying either a windvane or autopilot-- but I'm only coastal cruising around Salem Ma-- so less urgency on my end. I'll follow up with how it goes.
Awesome! thanks for buying the book, I hope it helps you, feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to help.
Great tutorial! I’m ordering your book and the gear to ween my Montgomery 17 off electric!
Awesome! Thanks. I am thinking about making another animation video with more detail at some point since this one was so well received. If you could leave a review on the book after you read it on amazon that would be great, I don't have many and someone left a one star review saying that it was just a rehash of info widely available on the internet. It makes my book look bad. The point of the book is to make it easier to figure out sheet to tiller while you're actively trying to make it work, so of course the information is other places as well, but the book is meant to make it easier to actively learn how to use it. Which can be hard to do while sailing because it can be quite unintuitive. Thanks for your support I appreciate it!
Hell yeah Damond!
Did you heave to to put the reef in or did i see it wrong?
I believe I did in this case, I can also do it by going close hauled with the autopilot and then easing the mainsheet. kinda depends on whatever the situation asks for.
@@sheettotiller okay, thank you. You did a nice job as far as I can tell. I was hoping there was a way to sail through a storm using sheet to tiller
@@jackshort2033 In this sort of situation sheet to tiller is not so good for a couple reasons, sheet to tiller likes long spells of constant, good wind. It suffers from lack of wind or gusty/changing wind. With squally days like that, there is usually little wind followed by heavy wind and rain from the squall, finally ending in light wind again. so it would be extremely annoying to use sheet to tiller, although possible.
Good job my friend. You were calm and collected. You took action to adapt and overcome. Your a true sailor
Thanks Jeff!
Very well done my friend!
Very well done. If that had been me the video would have been full of bleeps, bleeping out my expletives. Fortunately you will dry out pretty quickly..unlike the inside of that cockpit cushion 💧 💧 💧
Haha probably true!
Same. Jeez the obscenities that came out of my mouth the last time I lost my cool....
Scary & Cool!
it takes a brave man to record everything in a situation like this , you can be there will be armchair sailors double guessing everything you do, but this is real sailing! Its obvious you have a good plan of what to do when the wind comes up.
Thanks!
Tying up the autopilot is not a good idea, if you need to regain manual helm quickly its go a tame time. Can you use a velcro strap for a quick release instead?
I set mine up with a loop of shock cord that is attached to the AP using a stainless steel hose clamp. The loop then passes down around the side of the tiller and hooks on a small wooden knob I glued to the tiller directly under the tiller pin. The loop has a tab that hangs down so I can grab it and pull it off quickly. Works great! Quick to set and remove it. 🤙⛵️
Great point! However, all i have to do is lift up on the tiller pilot and it comes off, getting it to stay on is more of a problem, its got issues.
currently taking notes for when I set sail 😉
Can't wait to see it!
Holly chit man good on ya
Nice work luffing up to ease things until you could get that reef in.
Thanks! new style of video. Thanks for the comment.
Sorry but this doesn't appear to make any sense at all. By apparent wind are you referring to angle or speed? Why is the boom moving? If someone is doing that they can be steering. As apparent wind moves forward (luffing) that reduces not increases pressure on the sails. Max pressure on sails/sheets is perpendicular to the wind. I'm sure it works but I don't see that this explains how.
the sail never reaches the point of luffing. As the apparent wind increases (the boat goes upwind more) the sail has more power. More wind = more power. So the sail experiences more wind from an increase in apparent wind and it pulls on the sheet harder and moves the tiller to cause the boat to head to leeward. As the bow falls off the wind (goes more downwind) the apparent wind decreases, and loses power. Since it loses power it is pulling less on the tiller and the bungee overpowers the control line moving the tiller to bring the boat back up into the apparent wind. It's all a balance. The way you are thinking about it is how I originally thought it worked, but it's all about apparent wind.
@@sheettotiller Yes you like the phrase "apparent wind" but that's not how apparent wind works. If you're overpowered you reduce power by heading up. There's briefly more apparent wind speed but at a reduced angle so less load on the sheet. I could understand less load on the sheet allowing the bungee to move the tiller but can't see that an _increase_ in load on a sheet already at full extension can cause anything to move. But, however you like to explain it if it works it works.
I have a Cape Dory 28 hull #343; it was great watching your passage in a boat that I know.
Awesome! They're great boats, I've sailed a few others and the Cape Dory 28 is just about right for one or two people. Thanks for the comment!
