Pitawala Pathana is a unique grassland found in Riverstone, Matale. The grassland has great ecological value and is situated by the side of the Rattota - Illukkumbura Road. It spreads over an area of approximately 10 hectares and has many species of animals and plants out of which some are endemic. The Mini World’s End which is a smaller version of the popular Worlds’ End in Horton Plains is located in deep escarpment situated at Pitawala Pathana.
Riverstone Gap is a popular hiking trek located in the Matale district. It offers a great view for hikers and travelers in general. There are two waterfalls, namely “Sera Ella” and “Bambarakiri Ella” which are located in the vicinity. A trekking trip to Riverstone via Pitawala Pathana is highly recommended as it gives you amazing views of the surrounding valleys including the “Knuckles Mountain Range”.
Bambarakiri Ella waterfall is situated in the picturesque Knuckles mountain range, close to Rattota town in Matale District. It is a small fall of 3 meters in height. Caution should be taken when bathing here as it has claimed the lives of many. There is an old suspension bridge spanning the waterfall which adds the finishing touch to an already beautiful view of Bambarakiri Ella. Distance from Matale - 16.3 km (34 minutes)
There is a wide variety of flora, fauna and various types of birds in the area surrounding the Bambarakiri Ella Waterfall.
Getting to Bambarakiri Ella
From Matale travel along the Matale - Illukkumbura - Pallegama - Giradurukotte Road passing Rattota up until Laggala. At Laggala turn to the Matale-Laggala Road to reach the Bambarakiri Ella Waterfall.
