The Propeller Fell off My Airplane
Last summer I fulfilled my dream of buying this homebuilt airplane and flying it halfway across the country. Unfortunately on my first major flight away from home I experienced an in flight crankshaft failure resulting in the propeller completely departing the plane in flight. I'm heartbroken to say this will be the end of my journey with this little plane. Above all I'm grateful that the situation resulted in a safe outcome.
The cause of the crankshaft failure is currently unknown. Since there were no injuries or property damage, the NTSB chose not to investigate. Some theories include improper assembly of the crank hub, fatigue cracks, or a blockage of oil to the front bearing.
Thank you all for the support and kind words on my previous video, it means more than you know.

Flying the most affordable airplane across America
Переглядів 1,6 млнРік тому
The Sonex experimental airplane was designed with 2 things in mind: simplicity and affordability. With an operating cost of around $25 an hour, this plane perfectly fit my mission. After years of saving and months of planning I'm finally able to call one of these little planes my own! Come along for the journey as we fly this Sonex experimental aircraft halfway across the country. Thanks for wa...
Flying backwards in a Cessna 152!
Переглядів 16 тис.2 роки тому
40 knot head winds and a 35 knot stall speed allowed us to start flying backwards over the ground! We took a Cessna 152 from the Purdue University airport (KLAF) up to 9,500' to see if we could complete the negative ground speed challenge. Thanks for watching! The Controversial Plane Crash of David Lesh
Переглядів 19 тис.2 роки тому
A Beechcraft Bonanza A36 flown by the controversial figure David Lesh suffered a power loss resulting in a forced water landing off the coast of Half Moon Bay in California. Another pilot flying a Cessna 182 filmed the event from above. The shocking footage of the event brought about national attention as the event blew up online. This sparked debate into the true nature of the plane crash and ...

Why 8 cops? Oh. I forgot where I lived at...
The front fell off.
such a cutie
What does the plane have to climate control? Anything?
Should check that on a per check.
0:20 You bought someone else's home made airplane. Your lucky that it wasn't the wing that fell off.
I understand after an experience like this kinda putting you off that particular airframe. I had a similar experience where due to newer regs the lead free avgas caused a condition that duplicates vaporlock and ultimately shut the engine off while at altitude. You can guess the rest, anyway after the shock wore off and we figured out what was what I decided to look into EFI. I wanted the simplest most robust form of fuel injection I could find. As with anything having something with millions of hours of testing doesn't hurt either and as it turns out the general motors tbi systems from the late 70s to mid 90s were the ticket. Low but constant 15psi and a return line prevents actual vapor lock and any issues with less effective fuels.
I hope you got enough $$$ in a settlement from VW to buy a new, better airplane.
Nah dude. Just fix the crankshaft and propeller connection with something more suitable and fly that bad boy. You can't let a single point failure keep you and your plane down.
Epic, well-produced and presented.
"ya can't park there" lmao
No idea what engine you were using, but if it a regular engine it might not have been engineered to have a pulling force applied to it's crankshaft.
I would guess long EZ before Piaggio.
A glider instructor here. I apologize if this has maybe already been mentioned in the 3407 comments below, but... exactly what engine was this ? (Otherwise I have nothing to add: great airmanship, great luck factor and great video, thanks for sharing !)
So did ya ever find the prop?
very cool…thanks for sharing
Wonder where his flying will go f22 or musk space
Autopilot?
Parachute?
I live in the Vancouver, Canada area, where the Montains meet the Sea. You have a lifetime of flying adventures ahead of you, be safe and have fun in a life of flying.
Can we get an update on how its going?! Getting back into the air soon?
ATC POV: What do you mean the front fell off?!
Not Smart!
buys cheap a$$ plane prop falls off...... should have bought a real plane
Oooof. Just started watching this and the next suggested video is "My Propeller Fell off My Plane." Same plane. Excited to watch that one next to see what happened.
Why this channel only has 5 videos? Homie hasn't got a new plane yet despite all the coverage he got?
How often do you post?
IFR equals " I follow roads"!
Any word on where the propeller ended up?
I dream of owning an airplane.
how much did it cost
Should have asked the center for a speed check lol
What a fun video! Jealous of you doining this but glad you took the plunge. Got my private in 92 and have just under 500 hours but not flying now due to high cost and competing interests. Kepp it up and be safe!
Such a cool story :)
Bro's propeller said "peace out" and just departed... Where did the engine come from? What caused the strain on the crank shaft? Did the engine suffer some impact previously?
Newspaper article reads "there was no immediate indication whether there was a mechanical problem that forced the emergency landing." Seriously?!? The plane is missing its propeller lol
How are the stars a coupls 1,000ft up.?????
Mike Paty once said he has 3 strikes for not flying. One of them is flying at night. He would cancel a trip if he has to fly at night. His planes are 100 times more expensive then yours. I think you should consider his advice.
HI DO NTO STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING OK... TAKE THE OLD ENGINE AND I GIVE IT A BETTER ONE... OK.... THAT IS A YOU TUBE GOOFY GUY IN FL. THA TIS ALWAYS DOING THINGS DN FREBUILD FLY AND EVERY THING ALSO IN THE WIR FORICE TOO .. jIimmys World...
Absolutely spectacular video. Good for you!
TÜV sagt nein.
I think I found our SUV sized drones guys lol jk
Whats your instagram? You’re my new favorite YouTubr. 😁
"Suffering mechanical issues" meanwhile the entire propellor falling off:
I thought you couldn't just buy a completed kit plane.
You need a paramotor dude.
Id Rebuild it. no point wasting the work already done to it, can you find a certified engine that will fit that air frame? might not want to fly outside the air frames abilities but could be handy for some day trips or if is deemed reliable enough use as you intended
experimental is the future of GA.
Thats the Sonex
Should have recorded the landing
