My Mum and Dad went to this convention I believe. My sister remembers it as a child of 9 years . She said it was around 6 or 7 days and the sessions went into the evening. Imagine that. I remember being at Twickenham in the early eighties and they were 3 or 4 days and those hard old seats were very uncomfortable after a couple of hours. I have some very happy memories of Twickenham as a child. The catering operation back then and being able to get bacon rolls and coffee during the sessions, although it used to really annoy my mum. She was a bit of a puritan. We would get a biscuit and a flask of coffee during the talks. I used to go and help out back then there wasn't the health and safety rules we have now.. Different times really and back then I remember the older brothers and sisters really new their bible and were very zealous and studious at studying material. People were also a bit more open about things they weren't sure about or couldn't personally reconcile. I remember there was a lot of debate over what was allowed with blood, and also who wouldn't get a resurrection. Even as a child of ten I found it odd people were arguing about some concept in the future. I always remember though some lovely, Warm people with good hearts who were sincere and keen to go and preach and things seemed warmer and gentler then. It seems to have moved on a lot since then

Memories! That was my first year as Signs Overseer, supervising a super team to design and build the platform, make all the signs and any displays. The lion and lamb were made in Liverpool and brought in the back of a pantechnicon. We just hoped they wouldn’t be stopped by the police, knowing there was a 20 foot lion in the back! The platform design work was mostly done by Allan Boyle, who was later invited to the USA Bethel and died about a decade ago. One of the most talented and creative artists I’ve known. Another was David Bowell, a top typographer, who cut the polystyrene. The flowers and shrubs were bought in bulk each year, also some on free loan from the council, and some donated by sisters. (Also… a secret… some of the largest blooms were crepe paper screwed up and kept in place with thin cotton.) The groundsman was always very cooperative, and we were hypervigilant to build everything offsite, with no nails or screws dropped onto the pitch. We made a display to advertise the various local tours, but I don’t have a photo of it. One of the brothers who painted some of it was a clever young artist Bro Wild I think (?). The temporary speaker canopy was horrid; we redesigned it for later years. This must also have been one of the last years we had an orchestra at the Convention ?

My parents were baptized at this Assembly. I remember camping in a tent there and Dad volunteering in catering. There was also Pathe News footage of Mom and me collecting water. My Great Great Grandmother Jessie Hannah Adams (1887-1984) of Slough was baptised at this convention aged 83. She served faithfully until she died. She would sit in the car and offer magazines to passersby. Her Grandson (my Granddad Frank Adams) had been baptised in 1967 at Brighton along with my Nan (both from Maidstone). What a reward for my Grandparents in itself for getting the family underway in the truth! And Granddad and Jessie will be reunited soon along with so many others.

We went to the NYC Yankee Stadium that year for this assembly. At 12:33, was he smoking a pipe?

I was 9 at the time of this. My father shot 8mm cine film of an Edinburgh trip too. It too was filled with feeding the squirrels in the Gardens and the castle as well as an international games meet at Meadowbank stadium. No footage of me and my mum - just large sweeps and panoramas of the skyline silhouetted against the sky. Typical fathers who pretend to be film directors!

Nice to see Paul and Aila from Wbay. Also a reminder of the Murrayfield breeze; the platform always had to be designed to allow the wind to blow through it.
