A long association with Twickenham came to an end a few years ago. I would do preconvention work there as a lad. I loved the old green stands, the beautiful pitch and all the lovely people who filled the stadium during a convention. Wonderful memories. The best is yet to come!

I’m from Edinburgh and was a young boy of 8 then, great footage, nice soundtrack, did you travel all the way from Jersey? what an adventure. I’ve been digitising old 8mm and super 8 films recently and I love preserving these memories for people, it has a special quality.

I wish you went to Twickenham instead that year because I was there in 1978 as a 2 year old.

At 4m 50 second Doug Beavor and his wife Cam. His father Ernie “Armageddon Ernie” and his wife Jessie. They came to our congregation as circuit overseer back in the early 70s.

Our Kingdom Hall was built around this time. My wife and I helped on purchasing. The build was overseen by a group of brothers whose company designed and oversaw the project. When we looked at the materials list we looked locally to see if we could improve on the prices. A local company supplied block paving, Greenhams. Our price from them, if memory serves correctly, was £7 a square metre compared with the company’s price of £21. We made a huge saving! My wife also sourced the base more cheaply. A couple of years llater the Society introduced the RBC into the equation.

We had a Circuit Overseer and wife stay at our home for pre-convention work, Joe and Margaret Wood. Joe was Installation Overseer and Margaret worked on Rooming. They worked so hard much of the time in Gorst Road, they came home exhausted. On Sundays occasionally Joe would take me in field service and trained me to be a shepherd. Wonderful memories.

Nice work; what a fancy clock and ‘spire’! Similar to ours. We have used videos like this to show local junior schools who we are; we asked them how quick do you think this Kingdom Hall was built… 3 months, 3 weeks or 3 days? About 80% said months; 20% weeks, and not even the teacher thought 3 days!

We worked in the car park at Twickenham and so had a listening convention in Plymouth. We stayed with a Mrs Farrell in North Road East. Happy memories of the talks, songs and pasties!

I just spotted Joe Wood a Circuit Overseer who stayed with us from the late 60s until 70s. (About a minute from the end) He and his wife would come to Twickenham to do pre-convention work for many months. A lovely man who died too young but Margaret continues serving Jehovah in Leeds.

Looks like they had a mixed bag to deal with. I loved the outdoor conventions going back to the 60s, a real sense of coping with whatever was thrown at us. Oh and the hot meals! I really enjoy the piano accompaniment. Thank you.

I loved that old stadium. In 1968 we had a Circuit Overseer and his wife stay with us for preconvention work. April to August. As a youngster I got taken along to help out in the Installation department. What a privilege working around spiritual legends. The brother who stood out was Ken Richmond also a Circuit Overseer. He had been an Olympic wrestler and one of the guys who hit the gong at the beginning of Rank films.

Same year as the mega convention in Yankee Stadium if I remember correctly.

My mother and I played in the orchestra, (violins) - along with so many I remember but whose names escape me. Let me think. Ray Langford,, violin Stan and Grace Agombar, (violin) Duncan Campbell, (trumpet), Don Rendell (saxophone) - John Williams ,(conductor) Possibly David Hazel, (violin and Valerie Mc Clane (spelling?-violin John Gogh, (spelling - clarinet) Joe Harrison. (trombone). Many others, of course - and, again, many of these ones now awaiting the resurrection. They were certainly different times - but very valuable times!

Interesting.. they were shooting a Royal Salute at the Castle.. so either the Queen's or DofE's official birthday, so possibly the 10th or 15th June..

Great vid. I went there in 1984 and many times since. Much has changed but fortunately, most of the island remains unspoilt (in fact, untouched).

Thank you for sharing these movie footage. I was born 1945, baptized in 1956. So I can appreciate how Jehovah's people have come a long way to what we are today! More convinced of Jehovah's using this organization & his blessing!
