Burning Down Paducah (Live from the Junk Pile)
Lovely work on the upwind sail. I have similar problems with my new 12' dinghy. You've given me hope that I may be able to sail her after all.
It's 4 degrees out when I went to work this morning. This is helping me get through the winter. Enjoying your content.
Very nice video.🙂👍👍 Inspiring.
I'm beginning to think you own a gigantic private lake 😂 i never see a video of some nut in a powerboat trying to swamp you. So peaceful back in my sailing day i worked a schedule where i was off on weekdays when others were at work.
Most pleasure boaters won't get out on the water if temps drop below 75F. It gets pretty wild from May-June. That's when I hide out in the creeks to get away from the nuts haha.
flying!.....never seen you stressed !......good courage......folks that dont do these things alone dont appreciate the xtra stress of being by yourself!......Bama Rick
I'm a lot more confident than I used to be. That comes with experience I guess. Hopefully I'm not overconfident haha. The water was pretty cold when this video was shot. There's definitely some risk involved.
I enjoy your films, thank you
Have you seen a sail stick? I have not but it seems like a good way to hold the mane sheet
Great video as always. Ever since you introduced your beautiful skiffs here on UA-cam, I've wondered how you'd fare when you'd inevitably have to tack upwind one day. Quite well! For a floating tea-tray that is ;-) I think this video is the first time you've ever shown us yourself sitting up on the rail, and I smiled at your "alacrity" (as my Pa would put it!) in shifting sides when tacking. You also used every trick in the book to get your bow around in tacks.. backwinding, giving a stroke on the oar, I think you even gave a shove on the bottom coming out of a starbd tack! Question - did you strike your mizzen for this upwind run, or is there a reason that you didn't back the mizzen? Understandably, there's just not enough freeboard/stern bouyancy to go back there and backwind by hand, but maybe rig something liek a preventer to hold it backwinded? Meh, I'm probably overcomplicating this, you're not going upwind that often. "Gentlemen don't sail upwind!"
What is the Pa”?
When I first built this 15, tacking upwind was my favorite pastime for a while. But that gets old in a floating tea tray. Gentlemen don't sail upwind indeed! Haha These conditions were particularly challenging: a very tight cove, variable wind speed and direction, and-worst of all-a constant wallowing chop. The mizzen just isn't set up for fully backwinding in a hurry, but trimming it hard to center helps a lot (which I did do a couple times in this video).
@@georgewhitehouse8630Papa! Father... My Dad... He sailed a Hobie Cat and you'd better hustle on those tacks or else you're going swimming! Move with Alacrity! he'd say
Hard trim to center makes sense. Yes, I've had some "memorable" beats to weather, allot takes is some chop, narrow waters (channels, or under bridges, or the like), throw in some barge traffic... Fun times!
Pa = my Dad!
whoa nice song!
Thank you!
So after a year or more, how is the 1/4 ply working out? Ive heard of people pokin holes in their PDRacers that werent glassed
A beautiful day and a fantastic example of Cumulis Humilus! Keep singin and sailing!
Beautiful as always. ❤
An excellent example of short tacking! I once got trapped in a cove of tree stumps, so I couldn't lower my center board. I had planned on paddling my way out. But, just when it was time to leave, the wind freshened. It was too strong to paddle against. I tried paddling with the mainsail up, but it didn't work. I soon discovered that I could make a thin slice of up wind progress, as I sailed from one side of the cove to the other. I must have done a dozen tacks. But then I had gained the mouth. And I was free.
I would like a wren on a green t shirt. The wren spawned many folk songs here in England . Hunting the Cutty Wren, to hear the song you'd think you were dealing with a monster avian creature but in reality he's a diminutive individual but lightning quick. Do you post internationally, and what's the cost to post to the UK. Just asking for a friend who would like to support your work.
I will give that a listen. I'm a big Martin Carthy fan. Yes! I ship international. Can't tell you the cost off the top of my head, but it is very reasonable.

Glad you made it out. That got tense. Music great selection for the feel of video.
Good lyrics man.

Happy New Year!
You should cut them to look like big foot tracks
Love your videos ... especially the boat building. There is one thing that catches my eye... I have noticed that your rowing oar is on wrong side of the thole pin. The oar should be pulling against the pin and not the retaining chord from my understanding. Same on your oar locks if they have the single vertical pin. Pull against the pin. I guess all in all... if it works for you... it works. I just thought i would mention as i originally thought and did it the wrong way for my canoe rowing rig.
Sweet tune!
Thank you! It's basically a modified version of Stone Temple Pilots "Creep".
It's when you have to beat your way back when you notice the wind.
Haha yes you do! In a boat as small as my 12 I usually find it easier to row. Often, I can use nearby terrain to my advantage, rowing where the wind is less direct.
That pin you found would have been used to attach implements to the 3 point hitch on small tractors. You also had a strap hinge, like what might be on barn doors, and a horse shoe. Super cool. You need to get others to make their own small sail boats and start a club. I would be a part of it.
Ive been following for awhile now. This one was pretty darn good. Thanks!
Hello There! Your content is Excellent! I have analyzed your UA-cam channel and found some problems. if you agree. I want to share it with you.
Your videos are medicine to me like spiritual healing thank you 🙏
I love to hear it! Thank you
I think my wife might like this kind of sailing better. 😄
Does she not close reach or haul well? I have been subscribing for a while and can't help but think often she wants to be jammed up against that wind! No shade or sarcasm just genuinely curious. I am novice at best.
It really depends on conditions. She can sail on the wind to an extent, but needs more sail and more dagger board to do it efficiently. I'm also cautious not to push her too hard due to very low sides and open design. And for my type of sailing, it usually makes more sense to row upwind.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Another great tune- I like your pared back sound.
Thank you!
And I was wondering if you were the one overboard - should have known better. Nice boat control to be able to circle back and get it the first time. Way back when I started whitewater paddling I lost my wedding ring in Slippery Rock Creek in PA. No chance of finding it, but my wife was a very kind woman and didn't make a big deal of it - but it was replaced very quickly.
Awh man that's devastating. I've lost an expensive pocket knife and a good anchor. There's a lot of valuable stuff at the bottom of little creeks and rivers. I'm no detectorist myself, but love watching Aquachigger on YT.
Ahhh, I am shocked and stunned from this harrowing incident. I will not be able to watch sailing content at least till the evening. 😱Even armadillos are in disbelief and rushing away in horror.
It was a troubling experience. I'm still recovering
@@cumberlandrover thoughts and prayers... 🙏
Well, I had that happen once. My crew who was living up to the Drunken Sailor role, jumped from the bow, bounced off of dock and into the water. I’ll tell you, it’s hard to get a wet humiliated sailor back in the boat. Makes life interesting though.
Funny. I figured you were going to rescue. Santa Claus.
Ha yeah and you probably expect me to rescue a plastic skeleton on Halloween! CHEE--Z. I have better taste than that, Cliff.
Amazing job! 🤙⛵
Ah, the old “Cushion Overboard Drill”. Well done! Ya had me going there for a while 🛋️🎉
Great video, your work is very eclectic. Just curios about the ax, aside from rabid snapping turtles I have never thought to have an ax onboard for a day sail.
I prefer the axe to a naval cutlass for defense against river pirates. Personally, I wouldn't want to get that close to a snapper. The turtle would probably still win. But seriously, it's just a handy tool to have out there. I mainly use it when camping ashore
@@cumberlandrover That's what I assumed, excellent videos and thanks for the reply.
Good "man overboard" practice 😮
Last summer, leaving the Glénans islands to return to the mainland, my inflatable dinghy came off its towing line. I was surprised to see it had gone. I looked astern and there it was bobbing up and down on the waves, so I went and grabbed it - and repaired the carabinier link.
Those pesky carabiners are just not as reliable as a closed shackle even when working properly. I lost an anchor to one. They are very convenient though.
Good practice for what could have a drowning armadillo. I wonder if they even float. I hear their fatty.
One of my favourite facts about Armadillos is that they are good swimmers but would sink due their heavy shell. They compensate for this by having the ability to gulp air into their stomachs. Which increases their buoyancy. Once they have arrived on the other shore, they fart it all out.
Yes indeed. It happens more than you'd think. Actually, I have to rescue drowning armadillos pretty regularly. I like to keep my skills current with training exercises like this.
Time for a fast cusion rescue maneuver 😀 I DO love this boat!!
you have unique content.
Fun island, surprised you didn't run into an eastern diamond back or timber rattler, beautiful day for them with all the warm rock??!! Also a camping video would be very cool on the island!!
The ripple marks "pitch marks" are from the timber machining through the planer. Poor timber machining practice. Feed speed, blunt/over jointed knives etc
Snowshoes work equally as well and you don’t have the suction issues
I need a friend like you that needs a ride along for "logistics" support. :) Thank you for a great video on a cold wet morning.
Under a day
Can't believe how your corner of the world is similar to where I am. Except we don't have any cedar.
a solar panel with a small electrical motor may be a good alternative. You just steer in the sunshine, and the boat will keep go on.
light wind master!😁
Great episode. I wonder if this hill (before it became island) was subjected to complete deforestation which may lead to complete erosion which is typical especially for limestone areas. We have such places in my country but mostly you can see it in large swaths of mountains in Dalmatia. Once the soil is gone pioneer trees can slowly return but the soil will not regenerate even for centuries.
