BLM to log wildlife habitat hemlocks
The Medford District BLM continues to remove old-growth trees within the Late Successional Reserves, or forestland that's set aside for forest conservation and wildlife habitat.
In the case of the Paul's Payoff timber sale within the Last Chance project, the Medford BLM is targeting large, shade-tolerant western hemlocks that otherwise have extremely high ecological value, despite their lack of timber value.

These trees are marked for wildlife habitat retention, but they'll be logged anyway.
Переглядів 199Місяць тому
So a tree is marked for retention in a timber sale unit because it provides excellent and critical wildlife habitat. Great, right? ...not exactly. The Medford District BLM utilizes proposed new road construction as a way to log old-growth trees, despite their marks for retention. This means that, no matter the regulations in place to create balance between extraction and wildlife habitat needs ...
Last Chance Project, Paul's Payoff Timber Sale - Right Of Way Road Construction
Переглядів 186Місяць тому
Construction of additional, and oftentimes unnecessary, logging roads on public lands is one of the major loopholes the Medford District BLM is taking to log old-growth trees, despite their claims that they cannot and do not log old-growth. Here, in Unit 104 of the Paul's Payoff timber sale in the Last Chance project just outside of Wolf Creek, Oregon, you'll see a right-of-way marked out throu...
Last Chance timber project to remove forest canopy and northern spotted owl habitat

Paul's Payoff timber sale within the Last Chance project is just outside of Wolf Creek, Oregon, and is targeting some of the last intact, roadless forestland on BLM public lands. The logging perscription in this unit specifically targets nesting, roosting, and foraging habitat, aka late-successional forest habitat, by removing most of the forest canopy. When the logging is complete, most forest...
Breaking Down the Environmental Assessment for the Last Chance Timber Sale

If you have questions, we have answers! Let’s talk about the Medford District BLM’s latest old-growth timber sale: Last Chance. The aptly-named Last Chance timber sale targets over 8,000 acres of forestland including (yet again) large old-growth trees and northern spotted owl nesting, roosting, and foraging habitat. ❌ In this project, the BLM plans to log forestland in 4-acre-sized miniature cl...

"In Defense of the Biscuit is simultaneously beautiful, heartbreaking, and inspiring. It is the story of one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and of the courageous individuals and groups who are defending this place from devastation caused by huge corporations and criminal logging company operators who are protected in their illegal activities by armed (selective) law enforcement officers...

While the Medford District Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues to claim they cannot and do not log large, old-growth trees over 36”, we have blatant proof that this claim is simply untrue. Here in a unit of the Mill Rat timber sale of the Poor Windy project just north of Grants Pass, OR, you can clearly see the loss of two massive trees over 36” that have been logged, despite their markin...
