R2O3 is composed of Al2O3 + Fe2O3. Al2O3 is amphoteric (ie it will dissolve in an excess of either acid or base.) NH4OH is strongly basic. So, if you added too much NH4OH, it would dissolve some of the Al2O3 out of the R2O3 precipitate giving you a low result for Al2O3.

Because I prepared 250-mL solution and took 25-mL sample for testing. So sample dilution factor is 250/25 = 10. So 25 is not mentioned in Al2O3 calculation. For cement chemistry test details, please refer IS 4032.

Take 1 gram of the sample and add approximately 10 g of K2S2O7 (Potassium pyrosulfate) in a platinum crucible. Fuse the mixture over a Bunsen burner flame or muffle furnace. ( at around 1000deg C) Start heating slowly with constant stirring. When the melt becomes clear quench the crucible in cold water. Cool the crucible and its contents and dissolve the melt by heating with 150 to 200 ml of water in a 500-ml beaker. To the warm solution cautiously add approximately 12 g of sodium hydroxide pellets, a few at a time. This will dissolve the silicic acid formed during the fusion (the free silica is not transformed to silicic acid by the fusion). Digest on the hot plate for 1/2 hr at 80°C to 90°C. Filter quickly, using a close textured filter paper (Whatman 541 or 40). thoroughly scrub and wash the beaker with hot water. Wash the filter paper and its contents ten or more times with hot water to remove the sodium silicate. Dissolve the calcium sulphate and oxides of the metals that remain on the paper in 1.1 HCI. Transfer the residue completely in Whatman paper no. 40, wash t it with hot 1:1 HCI and with water till it is free from acid and ignite the paper and its contents in a platinum crucible at 1000°C for 2 hrs and weigh as free silica. Carry out HF treatment to ascertain the determination of free silica and report to the nearest 0.001 grams.

Excess alkalis in cement can cause: Alkali aggregate reaction: Also known as alkali-silica reaction (ASR), this chemical reaction between the alkaline cement paste and non-crystalline silicon dioxide, which is found in many common aggregates, can lead to expansion and cracking in the concrete. Efflorescence: • This is a white powdery deposit of salts on the surface of concrete, often visible when the water in the concrete evaporates. • The alkalis can react with certain minerals in the concrete to produce soluble salts, which are transported to the surface by the water. When the water evaporates, these salts remain as a visible deposit. Staining: Alkali substances can cause discoloration or staining on the concrete surface. The staining could be due to the alkali-silica reaction, efflorescence, or other chemical reactions between the alkaline cement and other materials.

The adverse effect of chloride ions on the concrete is termed chloride attack. Chloride ions attack the reinforcement of steel and cause its corrosion. Over 40 % of structures are corroded because of the chloride attack. Chloride can penetrate inside concrete through seawater, admixtures, cement, or even water.
