Impact of UV selective plastics on crop management
There are dozens of options for choosing a plastic for low and high tunnels, each with different features and capabilities that impact plant growth and pest abundance. In this video we discuss how UV selective films can be used in protected culture systems to manage crops and their pests.

    Are these for fall bearing raspberries? So when the floracanes are done fruiting in July, then they're cutback in the fall and the center new growth will be trellised to that space to be the primocanes for the next year?

    • @jeffmeyers3837
      @jeffmeyers3837 Рік тому

      @Katie The 2nd year Floricanes are initially on the outside of the trellis, since they fruit earlier (in July). Meanwhile the young sprouting Primacanes are growing up the center. After the outer Floricanes are harvested in July, they are removed and the now-larger Primacanes are put on the v-shaped trellis. These Primacanes will fruit in the Fall, sometime between Aug-Oct depending on variety. They are left on the trellis over the winter, are they later become floricanes the following Spring, and the cycle repeats. So you get two harvests per year with this method. I hope that helps.

    Very good information on the high tunnel method. The cost to profit calculation was based on one tunnel/number of plants or how many tunnels/number of plants? I rewatched and I guess I am not catching where that information was conveyed?

    What nutrients are you using for the plants?

    • @tunnelberries7605
      @tunnelberries7605 5 років тому

      We have been fertilizing with a commercial soluble fertilizer every time we irrigate, to provide 100 ppm nitrogen. Early in the season, we use a lower potassium product. When the fruit are growing, we use a higher potassium blend.

  • @deankreutzer2745
    @deankreutzer2745 5 років тому

    Can you tell me what fertilizer regime you use? My raspberries in containers only get 2’-3’ high

    • @tunnelberries7605
      @tunnelberries7605 5 років тому

      We start early in the season using a 21-7-7 soluble fertilizer with micronutrients (JR Peters Inc.) and switch to a higher potassium product later in the season when the plants are fruiting: 21-5-20. They are fertigated with these materials continually at a rate of 100 ppm N. We have also used small amounts of Osmocote before the season begins, but I am not sure that is beneficial. I would suggest watching the watering carefully as well; plants can deplete the water in the bags quickly, and water stress will also stunt plants.

    Can you recommend a cultivar that does well in high temperatures from your study. I want to grow in Med....so a challenge!!

    • @tunnelberries7605
      @tunnelberries7605 5 років тому

      Thanks for writing Glyn. In our short-season, cold climate, Polka, Kweli, and Imara have worked well. We described these and some other cultivars in another video: ua-cam.com/video/x7ysAAr5S0U/v-deo.html You might investigate what others in your climate and region have had success with. Our work indicates that relative productivity and fruit quality of cultivars tends to be similar in the open field as in tunnels in bags. I don’t know of any cultivars that are particularly more suited to pot culture. I think later primocane fruiting types would do better in a long Mediterranean climate. Later types also tend to produce taller primocanes that are better suited for fruiting as floricanes during the subsequent summer, if that is your goal. In contrast, the early primocane fruiting ‘Polka’ does fairly well for us here because our fall harvest season is short, but it grows shorter canes and is not so well suited for floricane production. Some problems increased by the high heat and humidity in tunnels are powdery mildew and doubling of fruit, so cultivars prone to those may not be the best choices. I hope this helps. I will be interested to know which cultivars do best for you. Eric Hanson
