This is a long form video talking about the recent manual transmission swap for my 2009 Pontiac G8 GT. Feel free to skip ahead to different areas. Some serious thanks are in order: Travis Carraway aka Horsepower Farm - skilled tradesman, smooth operator, and wizard with all things hotrod. This absolutely would not have happened without him. It all started with me calling and saying, “I just ord...

Haven't uploaded in a while! In this video, I talk about my Shockworks coilovers, forget what things are called, almost miss a turn, and forget to clean the camera lens before filming. lol Shoutout to TurtlesharkShooter for the original thumbnail photo and G8Only.com for posting my initial review! Check out my initial written review here: g8only.com/2021/05/04/shockworks-coilover-kit-review/

This is a test... of the Emergency Autocross System. Had this been an actual emergency, you would have been in serious trouble because you're watching a dumb video instead of dealing with the real issue. But yeah, this is a (very rough) test of a UA-cam broadcast of our December 2019 event. If enough people dig it, we'll improve and keep doing it. Critiques are welcome.
April Event - Angry Transmission

No intros or anything here. Just two of my best runs. Big shoutout to Stewart and Carlos for riding along. Looking at the footage, I realize how much I gave up in the slalom. It was a tight course, so keeping the lines tight was the only/best way to get around. We were 2.9 seconds off Top Time of the Day, so not bad. However, the transmission was not happy. Slipping and shuttering... bad times...
January 2019 - State Champs rematch!!
Переглядів 1255 років тому
It's a new year and a new season with my G8 (a.k.a. Betty White) and the Martin Sports Car Club! And this one just happens to be the biggest local event I've ever run: I rematch the 2017 Camaro SS that I (barely) beat for the CAM-C State Championship! Our last battle had me losing control in the final run and obliterating timing. Luckily, he couldn't put it together in his final run either, and...

Not the most action-packed video, but a valuable lesson learned. A quick review of the Carbotech AX6's and I almost burn my car down... yay. *I did win the class, but finished 27th out of 85 cars in raw time. Not bad, but not great.

I also install a set of Carbotech AX6 pads and new slotted rotors on the front. PLUS!! I use a Kobalt 3/8 impact gun! Wow!! The club I autocross with: martinscc/ Our next event: facebook.com...
Back again, for the first time. And this time, its personal. With a vengeance.

Thrilling first-person perspective review of my new Sparco Sprint V! I almost bought an NRG 300 series seat, but I went with this instead. Thanks to Desmond for the recommendation and thanks to Murray Motorsport for having great prices.
November at The FIRM

Last points event of the year. First time at the FIRM for the Pontiac! It was fun and FAST! (for an autocross). I bounced off the rev limiter on the last run, which is 67 mph in 2nd gear. I also did a grid walk for Heat 2, with post-event commentary. Because I'm fancy like that. P.S. I ran a faster time than the McLaren (smiley face). P.S.S. Big thanks to Nicole for the thumbnail photo!

Wow! Such a #stunning and #brave masc-presenting transmission! I figured they/them's name would be "Manuel".
In the middle of my swap now. Stuck on wiring. With the wiring process you used, are there any error messages present on the DIC (stability control, abs, etc.)? Also, maybe I missed it (sorry if I did), what file did you use for the car? Was it a GXP file or a holden file? Do you happen to know if this wiring process would work for the holden file? Thanks in advance and great video!
No DIC issues, aside from no TCS. It just would display that it was off. For the tune, that was handled by Adam Cooper. I’m not a tuner, but it looked like he took my car’s tune and removed the trans along with a few other unknown adjustments.
@@g8autox Thanks! Do you happen to have any contact info for Adam? The "contact" page on his website doesn't seem to be working.
Getting close to wrapping up a ton of work on my G8 currently including full BMR suspension and bushings wit Whiteline sway bars/links and the Shockworks coilovers. Super excited to see how it rides and handles when I'm done. Coming from bone stock suspension with 165k miles on it.
Where did you get the wheels from with those specs/color. I'm only seeing black offered with those specs
Hi mate, i am doing a manual swap by any chance you have a manual tune for o/s 1250227
No, sorry. The tuning was handled by Adam Cooper (Ace Performance). I believe he just used my car’s original tune and modified it to not have the auto trans, along with a few other unknown adjustments.
Dependable driveshaft, crossing my fingers lol
Picking up a Nissan CD009 and an LS adapter kit tomorrow due to the crazy prices on 6060s/T56s and the thinness of my wallet. Anyone here done an LS/CD swap and have any advice?
The 6l80e in my 2009 GT crapped out in 12/2023 and I had it rebuilt at Nichols Performance Transmission in Grain Valley Missouri. Although it was over $6k for a performance rebuild I'm very happy with it and I think it was worth it to not go through all of the trouble for a manual swap. Thanks for making this in depth video.
how much did u spend on doing ur swap ?
I recapped it in the previous video, but somewhere around $5k-$6k?
Thanks for posting this. My 6L80 has been acting up and i was considering a manual swap but you convinced me not to. Its just a fun weekend car for me so ill look into fixing up the 6L80.
At 43:45 if we i did that wiring for the reverse light, will my back bumpers sensors work with the reverse lights?..or thats different work to do other than the lights ? Thanks!
Not entirely sure about the bumper sensors. If they’re driven off the tail lights, then they should. If not, you’ll have to get power to them when the tail lights come on.
I just got a g8 base and planning to ls3 tr6060 swap lets see how this goes only thing I am confused on what I need to do is wiring harness and etc
Your best bet is to find an Australian VE Commodore V8 manual harness. From what I understand, it’s pretty much plug and play. Short of that, a V8 G8 harness will work.
Maybe i missed it but, comfort series or premium?
Premium
Hey I just got my Shockworks premium coil overs in for my g8. For the fronts, did you have to use any of the stock strut bushings or anything? Or do they just bolt on as they come?
They bolt on as they come. They don’t use the typical strut mount bushing. It’s a metal on metal fitment. Seems weird, but it works.
Hey what other suspension parts are you running besides the coilovers?
I'm running the Shockworks premium coilovers (9k front / 12k rear), BMR rear cradle bushing kit, and BMR front and rear sway bars. The Shockworks were an absolute gamechanger.
Thanks! I’ve always been interested in making these cars handle better. I just picked up my 3rd g8. Thanks for the videos, I think you’re the only one on here auto crossing in a g8.
What wheel and tire spec are you running? And what are those wheels?
At the time, I think they were Federal 595 RS tires. Most recently, I ran the Bridgestone RE71RS in the same size: 275/35/19. The wheels are Konig Oversteers (19x9.5, +35 offset) and they will be for sale soon. 🙂
Random question. Do you know what the stock g8 driveshaft length is without the guebos? Is it actually 60" as websites say? Or is that 60" including the guebos?
Oh man, that's a tough one because it actually telescopes a bit. I know Dorman had a replacement for the stock auto driveshaft and they listed it as 59.4 inches.
Did you connect the wire of the pedal ?if you did where did u connect do I have to connect it ?please let me know I’m doing mine rn
I’m assuming you mean the clutch safety. We didn’t connect it, so I don’t have any insight for you, there. If you’re able to get the manual Commodore wiring harness, i believe its all included.
Do you need to do a DOD delete before the swap?
Nope, not at all! I still have my stock cam and DOD. Although it has been tuned out for years now. You will need a new tune to make the engine run smoothly with the manual, though.
I just did my first swap !!!!
I have a auto GXP maverick metallic silver and this car is amazing
you are a god for this
good day my dear nice swap, what about a transmission crossmember for your tr6060
The GXP tr6060 crossmember is still available brand new. That’s what I used. With a Camaro tr6060, I’ve heard of people cutting the stock auto one or using an aftermarket one for a TH400 and modifying it to work.
Really appreciate you taking the time to do this video. A manual swapped G8/Caprice PPV has been something I've been kicking around in my head for a couple years but I really don't have the tools or know-how to get it done. As expensive and time consuming as it is, manual GXPs seem like unobtanium at this point so it still seems like the best option..
I went with a driveshaft shop aluminum. I haven't installed it yet. I went with them vs koza because the cv joint ends
Thanks for the review, i been considering getting rid of my mag ride on my SS for these, i just don't like the sag on King springs i get in the rear. I do a lot of road racing and the mag ride is great! Also man if you get the car on scales and corner balance it, it will make it a lot better.
It's funny you say that. I've been super curious about how far off it is in terms of corner balancing. Part of me really wants to do it. But the other part doesn't know if I'm a good enough driver to really benefit from it. One of these days, I'll probably get it over to one of the local shops and get it done.
I have a manual swapped crown Vic. Never cheap out on a swap I bought the car like that and I’m over what the swap kit coast. I’m thinking of getting a G8 and I want to do it right.
Just get a GTO
Ugly car, shit rear wheel clearance
Nah
Hopefully not a dumb question; 1. Is it possible to leave the TCM hooked up and left around to the side to "trick" the car into letting the other features (cruise, ABS, traction control) might work? 2. Is it possible to reprogram the BCM to enable those features as if it was a GXP car?
Howdy! Definitely not dumb questions! Since we didn’t do either one of those, I’m not 100% sure. But, I can say I’ve seen people talking about it on old forum posts. I want to say I remember seeing someone post about a TH400 swap and keeping the stock TCM on or in the car somehow. But, I’m not sure on how much functionality it provided. For the BCM, I forgot to mention that in the video. There’s lots of talk about having the BCM reprogrammed. However, two people I spoke with said they never reprogrammed the BCM and everything was fine. I think that is mostly dependent on your wiring and the tune you’re running. As well as what defines “fine”. Either way, if you want to dig into that further, Chris White (www.whiteautoandmedia.com/product/g8-custom-manual-trans-conversion-bcm/) offers a service to reprogram the BCM. Just note, his website does mention that you need to have the wiring and tuning in order.
@@g8autox I did the swap several years ago. Since then the car was sold to my high school buddy and I moved on to C7s. Yes, I sent my BCM to Chris White. Not sure if he still does this because it is probably very rare that he is asked anymore. My swap used 100% new GM parts for the GXP. Including the real manual engine harness (last one in the USA), real TR6060 trans, etc, etc. It was a fun project but the car turned out to be a hard core muscle car that simply wasn't too fun to drive anymore. I much prefer my manual trans Corvette C7s with rev match, etc. If I get another G8 or Caprice, I'd instead do a high stall converter and keep the auto.
Great video. I'm actually going to pick up a full GXP swap tonight. Everything from the trim piece to the driveshaft and harness. It's a low mileage take out and I scored on the price big time. I was wondering if I needed the BCM reprogrammed as you didn't mention it. I guess I'll see what my tuner says as I believe he has tuned a couple swaps local to me over the years. From what I know even with the whole harness I'm getting it still needed to be done. But seeing as you didn't I'm curious if I need to. I'm also picking up a Magnuson TVS 2300 tonight from the same guy 😮. So my tuner is gonna be pretty busy on my car in the next few months. Thanks for the video man much appreciated.
Great Vid. I have the comfort series and have called down to Australia a couple times too. After your review I wish I would have went with the premiums. I opted for the standard 8k front and 12k rear and no matter how I adjust them, I can't get rid of the bounciness. I'm thinking the spring rates and valving in the premiums are probably perfect for the car and the comforts need a little more testing. I'm using similar wheel specs but 18's and I also can't get the rear as low as I would like. The H&R springs I ran before sat lower. They do handle great though.
Hey John! It sounds like you've already looked into it, but are you sure you have the preload set up properly? I've heard that is an issue if it's not right on these. And I actually have mine set a little higher than what I had with my old H&R's (maybe .5 inch?). I haven't tested how much lower I can go. Either way, good luck on getting them dialed in!
@@g8autox well it is my first time setting preload but I watched a million videos on UA-cam, so I have to be an expert lol. I set the preload off the car when I assembled the CO’s. On the comfort with the standard springs, it’s 10mm front and 20 mm rear. I used a tape measure and a caliper tool. Made sure the springs were equal length when I found “0” preload and adjusted from there using the caliper tool. Not sure what I did wrong lol but I hate the ride on the comforts lol.
How does this video only have 2 likes??? C'mon guys!!
How often are you still autocrossing this?
At least once a month. She does well, all things considered.

Sick transition, can’t wait to see rip it down the road
What wheel and tire size and what camber settings are you running with those coilovers? Looking for a good trackday package and would prefer a square setup for tire longevity. Great looking car you have there.
Hey Jeff! I'm running 19x9.5 Konig Oversteers with a +35 offset. For tires, I'm running 275/35/19's squared - currently BFG Rival 1.5's, but I'm about to change up to the new Bridgestone RE71RS's. For camber, its around -1.8 front and rear - depending on the machine doing the measuring. It's maxed out on the front with camber bolts. Due to the camber, I have to run a 10mm hub centric spacer on the front with longer wheels studs. But with about a two finger's wide gap between tire and fender, I don't have any rub.
@@g8autox Thank you!
Thankyou for your insight. I just got a pair of these for my front wheels and they are loud!! I was wondering why the hell they’re so loud…funny thing is I also thought they sounded like an exhaust 🤣
How are the premiums in straights? I know they offer a drag series, and my car will be drag most the time but I would like to go to a road racing event at some point, im afraid the premiums are too stiff to throw weight back when you need it. car also has a blower on it and hooks suprisingly well on stock suspension
I can't give you a really good answer unfortunately because our cars are pretty different in terms of power. I've only got headers, a "hot air intake", 3.45 gears, and a tune. I can say that on the occasional launch on the street, there's only minimal slippage of the tire - a hazing, if anything, in first gear. But those are the same 275 Rival 1.5's I autox with and they're pretty sticky. I could go 4 clicks softer on the rear if I wanted but I don't know how much that would change things. Beyond that, I'll tell you that your best bet will be to reach out to Chris O'Brien with Shockworks through FB messenger or Joe Labruzza with G8 Only. Chris knows his product very well and will be able to give you definitive answers. Joe probably can, too. Hope that helps!
Do you still like the shocks?
I actually just sold them, lol. They were great, but I ended up going with Shockworks coilovers, which are a game changer.
@@g8autox I just bought some for the rear. What do you recommend for the best adjustment?
Question, howd you get the camber bolt out of the lca. I'm having a heck of a time, cant get any leverage on it. Did you have to cut yours out? I even dropped the tail pipes to get an impact on the back end. Thanks!
I put them on not knowing how loud they were I thought I had all my wheel bearing out at once
I thought the same thing lol…it’s like a loud humming almost like a lifted truck!
Man.... it would have been nice to see the disassemble/reassemble of your project
Im a fan of stock suspension and still find the rear a tad lower! This is genius!
If you end up doing it, one thing you may notice is the 1LE LCA's cradle bushing is a little smaller in diameter than the G8 one. I was a little concerned that this would lead to binding or other issues. But, I can proudly say, after two years and roughly 24 or so autocrosses, everything is still kosher with the 1LE LCA's. Still no rubs, and no other issues whatsoever.
Love mine on my MX5.....4 shipped for $405.00.
Looking forward to your 2021 season 👍🏻
I have been wanting to try to install the 1le or zr1 lower contol arm toe rods and trailing arms on my g8 instead of buying something like bmr for my build becouse of the more prformance bushings vs the comfort bushings in the g8. Thanks for all the info
You do realise that this is an Australian made car , By General Motors Holden,, In Oz it’s call a Holden commodore SS , All SS’s are V8 But they do run the chev motor , But produced here in Australia 🇦🇺 We use to produce our own 5 litre V8 , but found the chev to be cheaper, lighter, and more powerful, So we stuck with it ,, I have one and it goes like a bat out of Hell ⁉️👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Tim Dingle aka Jack Sparrow Oh yeah, I’m well aware of its Aussie birth. I have to explain it to everyone that asks, “What car is that!?” Its funny how many Americans don’t even know what a G8 is, let alone a Holden Commodore. Personally, I think Pontiac should have kept the Commodore name. I like it much more than G8.
Every G8 video has to have the "acktually it's Australian" guy
Nice!!! Glad to see some solid numbers! I can’t wait to go to one of our events here I won’t be as fast but I know it’ll be fun!! What’s the suspension set up?
APACHE G8 Do it!! You’ll probably be surprised how well balanced our cars are, even with a stock suspension and tires. Mine is pretty basic: H&R springs, Koni yellows, BMR rear sway bar, and BMR front endlinks. I also run 275 wide, 200 treadwear tires front and rear. Alignment makes a big difference too, IMO.
1-2 seconds per lap is an eternity.
Marlon Ostil Depends on where you’re at. On a local level, its not terrible. Its up to you to decide if 1 second is worth about $1,000 in tire upgrade.
Im in Miami where did you get these or do you have the distributor you will be using? Thanks great video
jcues03 I did use a company out of Miami, at first - Universal Tire International. Ask for Jose Aloyo. I ended up using FattiMotorworks the second time. They’re in Central Florida and the owner is a fellow autocrosser.
Nice info
Thanks!
