Watercolor Tips and Tricks You Should Know
In this video we will cover all of the basic techniques you need to know as a watercolor artist. These techniques take time and practice. So, focus on one of these at a time. Don't get too caught up in jumping from one to the next, as I do in the video. This is intended to give you a quick snippet into a BUNCH of tips, tricks, and basic techniques. I use Daniel Smith watercolors from the tube. In this video, I’m using Ultramarine blue and a little bit of cadmium orange.
We will cover:
Using a flat brush and a round brush.
The difference between sable and squirrel brushes.
Watercolor washes - graded, wet on wet, flat wash, wet on dry
Scratching watercolor paint and lifting paint
Dry brush technique
What is a bloom, and how does it happen.
Masking watercolor paper with rubber cement
Brush strokes with a flat vs a round brush.
Glazing
This video is inspired by the in-person beginning watercolor class I teach in Bellingham, WA. Use it as a reference to inspire you and come up with your own techniques!

Super Easy Tutorial on Painting Waves, Rocks, and Reflection on a Beach in Watercolor
Переглядів 223Місяць тому
I find myself testing out a lot of UA-cam artists to see if I can successfully recreate their step-by-step instruction and then pass it off to a class of students in person. I love following Paul Clark. He tends to make things super easy to follow. For this tutorial, I had a student request instruction on painting waves. Easy 2-Point Perspective in Watercolor Architecture
Переглядів 80Місяць тому
STRUGGLING WITH PERSPECTIVE? In this video, you will learn some quick tips on getting your two-point perspective architecture to "look" visually accurate. When you're painting a loose watercolor or doing a quick rendering, nothing has to be "perfect!" It just has to look close enough that the viewer knows what they're looking at, and things don't feel like they are floating or leaning the wrong...
Side by Side Comparison of Arches vs Canson Watercolor Paper
Переглядів 3482 місяці тому
I recently went out with a friend to plein air paint. I used arches and gave my newbie friend a sheet of Canson XL watercolor paper. The numbers relative to each sheet of watercolor paper were the same. Arches rough: 140lb 300gsm Canson XL pad: 140lb 300gsm However, the results could not have been more different. So, I decided to do a side-by-side comparison of each type. WOW! There was such a ...

I just got a recent order of Daniel Smith watercolor tubes from Jerry's Artarama. Let's unbox them together! Is this WATERCOLOR an EPIC FAIL???

This watercolor gift of my friend's client's house could be an epic fail! I am just painting a small house that she can give to her client. What could go wrong? Does it suck or is it awesome? Will her client love it or hate it? Have you ever tried to draw a building onto your watercolor paper and found yourself tracing and making carbon copies? What a pain! You can see my full process on gettin...
Painting a Tattoo Style Mural on a Door - Gallery Alley

I was one of several artists chosen to design artwork for the annual Gallery Alley art installation in downtown Bellingham, WA. Each year, the City of Bellingham does a call for artists to design and paint two sides of a door that will be hung in one of the alleys in the downtown area for two months. They display one side for one month of art walk, and then they flip it to show the other side f...

Love it!
So glad! Thanks for watching!
Wondering how you made out with your set of travel brushes?? I have 2 sets of Fuumuui travel brushes - they ended up being far superior to the very expensive brands I own!! - go figure lol I bought the 1st on a lark, figuring not much $ lost, if they weren’t any good Great surprise, they were awesome (Different set than what you have) Great brushes for insane price - gotta love those kind of surprises 😂❤
They worked well for what I needed - small, compact brush set with various brush head options. Super surprised, as well, for the very small investment. I would buy them again! Thanks for watching 🎉
And I've sub'd. Great to find your channel. Mx🌷
Sweet!! Stoked you’re following along!
Oh, yes! Thanks from northern England Mx🌷
You are so welcome! 🎉
What magic is this!?! I'll have to watch again... do I need equipment? Oh my! I had to slow down the painting part but I love this sketch! Looking forward for more from you, and checking out your channel. Mx🌷
Hahaha! The DaVinci Eye App is awesome!! You just need a cell phone and the app. They suggest you rest your phone on a glass of water (without the water). But I use a little tripod. I think I’ll make a video that goes into detail about how I set up and use the app is a good idea. Several people had questions about my set up. Thanks for watching!! I appreciate the support!
We have both Arches and Canson papers (and many more). I'm definitely an Arches gal, but my husband prefers Canson. We have very different styles and preferred techniques, so our paper choice reflects this. He likes smoother hot pressed papers for line and wash. I like cold pressed and rough textures for granulation and dry brush details. We are happy to use either though and adjust our techniques accordingly. It's a lot of fun to experiment and get happy accidents. 😊 I prefer cellulose paper when en plein air as it dries faster and I'm impatient. 😂
This is such great insight!! When I tried this I could definitely see how there would be specific uses or preferences for both types! Thanks so much for sharing and watching 😊
How did you hold the phone while using the DaVinci app? I ve tried using it on a tall glass, and it gets in the way. I have a gooseneck holder, and it’s difficult too! What am I doing wrong?
Hey Sally! That’s a great question. I may have to do a video that shows my set up! I have also tried a gooseneck and those are definitely difficult! The app suggests a glass, which I’ve never understood. I have found that using my selfie stick/tripod works the best! Here is a link to the one I use! amzn.to/4fZUFnb. I hope that helps! If you have more questions, holler! Thanks for watching!
Thanks I’ll try that!
That was really cool. I look forward to you creating more videos for us. Good delivery too.
Thanks for watching and for the great feedback! Glad you enjoyed it!
Just found you, Love your art & content! Keep Going my Sister👍👍Cheers
Thanks so much for the support! I will keep cranking it out. Thanks for the follow 💪🏻
Amazing work, I love it. Thanks.
Awesome! Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Great video thanks Robin, greetings from Australia 🇦🇺.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it
Finding the right green for PNW trees is literally something I've been struggling with.
Have you tried perelene green??? Or Undersea Green??? I think they work really well in combination with some lighter colors as well as just adding in ultramarine blue here and there. Let me know!
@RobinMakesStuff I have Prussian Green in my shopping cart right now. Haven't seen it in person, but it reminded me of some rainy winter hikes I've taken.
@@FuzzyBunnyofInle I just looked that up from Daniel Smith and I can totally see what you’re saying! A little more on the blue side , which I like too. Looks like a good one! I might have to give that one a go as well! But definitely check out those other two if you haven’t!
Arches is French, it’s pronounced “Arch,” the (s) is silent, Thanks for sharing!!!
Oh, awesome! Thanks for chiming in and letting me know. I would have had no idea! Is it safe to say that most "Americans" might pronounce it with the "es"? That's the only way I have ever heard it pronounced. I LOVE this input! Thanks for watching!
@RobinMakesStuff I would write Arches phonetically as 'arsh'. Yes, it is French with a silent s, but most Americans seem to say arches so either pronunciation is common and understood.
Well done! Thank you
Glad it was helpful! 🎉 Thanks for watching!
It's called "bevelled".
I just googled it and it seems like maybe “deckled” is the term we are looking for, which was mentioned by someone else as well?? What are your thoughts? 😊
Have you tried DS's Green Apatite Genuine....I have fallen in love with a tube of watercolor ! Does that mean I need to get a real life? LOL
Hahaha. Art is LIFE!!! 😅 I will go check out that green right now! Getting ready to place another order!
@@RobinMakesStuff Be careful! You might fall in love too! 😃
Thanks! I like the deckled edge on all sides too.
Glad I'm not the only one!
Daniel Smith is a Seattle based company. They used to have an art supply store attached to their warehouse in South Seattle. It closed, which is a bummer. There's a lack of good art supply stores in south sound (I'm on Fox Island).
When I noticed on the box/packaging that they were made in Seattle but I ordered from Jerry's in NC, I got a kick out of that... since I'm just north of Seattle. It's cool to hear a little of the history, though! Thanks for sharing!!
This is fabulous. I really needed this process. I am a new subscriber and hope that you do more like this.
Awesome!! Thanks for your comment and thanks for subscribing! I definitely plan on doing more! 🥰
You did a great job!
Hey! Thank you!! 😊
Glad to see you enjoy them so much.😊
Yep! They work great for painting on the go!
hi, i am your 2nd viewer.... love the owl rendition... gudday
Thanks for watching and chiming in! I love the owl too 💪🏻
Now if you decide to get the nitro sized one as well the sunglass holder is orange in size
Go back into the water compartment it actually has three points to hang or bladder or something else There are two toggle hangers in there Also the shove it section has jay hooks that you can undo and it exspans way out to hold a blanket, hoody, your chair or what ever Both sides of the pack has pass throughs for longer items and one side has a keeper Also look at the molly on each side there is more velcro to ad patches As well as near the grab handle
I didn’t see TWO toggle hangers. I’ll have to check on that. But yes! There are soooo many things this back pack can do. I definitely tried to keep it short and sweet like a highlights video. But, I am obsessed with the flexibility of this pack compared to other similar packs! Thanks for your comment!
Go back into the water compartment it actually has three points to hang or bladder or something else There are two toggle hangers in there
Oh you’re right! There are two more super hidden attachment points in the hydro section. I don’t think I would have ever found those on my own because they are so tucked in there. Thanks!
@@RobinMakesStuff yeah there hard to get to
@@RobinMakesStuff you’re welcome
You can also move your bushes to the water bladder second that way you can have the main compartment ready for your clothes or what ever
Oh! Great tip!
Tip for your molle webbing . When attaching pouches weave your pals straps in and out of the molle its makes a difference on securing and stiffness
People that do not like molle are limiting them self from adaptability. Pals allow you to live out of the matrix . Most people say oh its to tactical well yeah its functional is the way to be in life . For me i do not like vertx packs because there over priced for no reason mystery ranch has that cringe zipper design People don’t understand the products they buy they just want to jump on someones band wagon because of their account size . This packs zipper design allows to leave the tops of to retrieve gear on the ready Only feature is would of added to this pack would be a small pocket on bottom with an attached rain cover .
100% agree!! I researched TONS of tactical bags for my art gear and this one really sets the bar. I LOVE the molle webbing! Game changer!
Best bag i love mine
I’m obsessed with it! Worth every penny!
@@RobinMakesStuff yes more people need to see the truth !
The black and orange is FIRE . The innovation of this pack is light years a head of any other pack on market . Its even extremely comfortable
Both paintings look great!
Thanks so much! 🤗
