Hello, and thank you for posing such a fascinating subject! Here's the solution: Because it transmits vertical loads via bending, a single-span truss bridge is similar to a simply supported beam. Compression occurs in the top chords (or horizontal members), tension in the bottom chords, and tension or compression in the vertical and diagonal elements, depending on their direction.
