Lack of justification does not bar sympathy. Kindness can always exist alongside justice which is extremely difficult, but also the exact reason why Robin hugging Sunday in the end was moving. She could've chose to watch Sunday fall all alone. But no. Freedom is The Thing With Feathers is a song for Sunday. She chose to fall with him. She's literally the human embodiment of The Harmony's ideals. The kindness and helplessness which Sunday opposes still chose to comfort him in the end. No one is saying he's justified in his actions, but almost everyone who read the story properly also agrees that he is a sad and lonely man who was not just influenced horribly by Gopher Wood but also worn down by a world that lied to him about happiness.
