@CSXEK Hwy 58 is scheduled to be rebuilt within one year starting about 2 months ago. Last I heard, they are way ahead of schedule. Hwy 81 is done. Hwy 421 is open now also. In the meantime, hardly anything has been done to repair the USFS controlled section of the Virginia Creeper from Whitetop to Damascus. Call your representatives!

@SandraBillings-z9j Wow. That's so cool to know. It really is amazing that they're still standing. There's a lot more room for the water to spread out around there than say compared to the more narrow Antioch Church area.

It's probably a lot of footage of what you've already seen, but I figured why not. Hopefully, it can be educational and inspirational towards the work that needs to be done. I've watched a lot of your videos of the upper parts of the trail and I really do understand the devastation, but I truly believe that with the right funding and the right approach that this trail could re-open way sooner than people are willing to believe. Downstream from the place you mentioned (where the 15-foot deep pit is at) is another much worse area of complete erasure of the trail, but with the right approach it is easy to see that this whole section could obviously just be detoured by simply rerouting the Creeper up onto the side of Hwy 58 for a short ride and then back down onto the trail. I hope that folks will approach this from a minimalistic approach. We don't need "train trestles" rebuilt except for in a few cases or less. We need smaller bridges that will be much more affordable. It's easier than I think most folks are allowing themselves to think. Funding is the key.

@AdventureAwaits1111 Yes, I agree. However, that "little creek" is the Laurel Creek. Super huge water shed. I believe that it originates somewhere in the mountains above Trade, TN. I know for sure that it runs all the way from the TN/NC border through Mountain City, TN, and all the way through Damascus, VA to the South Holston River, and into SoHo Lake. Newport. I moved here in 2012 and they are some of the greatest people ! They remind me of how it was in Ohio when I was growing up, friendly, helpful and they come together no matter what, the people in Ohio were getting rude, self centered and set back and let someone else do all the work. I have not been over in Mountain City but I have talked to a couple of guys from there and they were very pleasant to talk to .I don't know if you are there but Mr. Bob Stout and the two guys from Robinson logging seem like they are the same way there.

@jeffharper7579 Oh, that's interesting. I'm just looking at the map. I recorded a band called the Pigeon River Messengers. Looks like Newport is just above the joining of the French Broad River and the Pigeon River, where they go into Lake Douglas. Water still flowing south, I guess. Lucky you didn't flood worse. A lot of downstream places did. Maybe due to the lake, there was room enough for the water to spread out.

👍 Newport was kinda lucky if you can say that but the rafting companies on the pigeon and the town of Hartford is gone but they say they will be back.

Anyways, to answer your qusstion- I think that it's just typical deep paranoia of an organization that knows they aren't doing a good job. Did you notice the fence plus even the fences on the observable ends of the housing trailers? These people are afraid of something that doesn't exist.

Subscribed. That looks like beautiful country up there. I've been to Wytheville, Galax for the Fiddlers Convention, Rt. 129 and the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Skyline Drive and BRP top to bottom, but I don't think I've ever been to Abingdon. It looks a little far from here. We have Union Grove and the Merlefest here in North Wilkesboro to keep us entertained. Stay good and safe.

@jonesrick1 Nice. Damascus is part of the motorcycle ride called "The Snake." From SoHo to Shady Valley to here to Mountain City. It is beautiful. Merlefeat was my first ever festival!
