Camping, Cooking, and Comradery around Big Bear Lake - Checkin it Out [S1-E9]
When it comes to outdoor adventures, sometimes the best memories are made when things don't go according to plan. This week on Checkin’ It Out, Noah and Chris head up to Big Bear Lake with an unexpected detour, a wobbly canoe ride, and a comical cooking session.
Let’s set the scene: The original plan was straightforward, a smooth drive up Highway 330 to Big Bear Lake. But, as luck would have it, the main route was closed. Noah and Chris had to take Holcomb Valley Trail, a rugged backroad that’s more dirt and bumps than pavement and comfort.
Picture this: a little Scion navigating through rocky patches and ruts that would make an off-road enthusiast question the Scion’s non-lifted suspension.
But that’s the beauty of detours, isn’t it? They’re the scenic route to unforgettable stories.
After the trail it was time for a relaxing paddle on the lake. Or so they thought. The duo loaded up their canoe and hit the water, but Mother Nature had other plans. The wind? Relentless. The water? Choppy. The canoe? Tippy! Every gust of wind felt like a playful shove, daring them to keep their balance. At one point, it seemed like capsizing was inevitable, but with teamwork and sheer determination, they managed to stay afloat.
After their aquatic adventure, it was time to set up camp and refuel. They found a cozy spot surrounded by towering pines and got to work. Dinner? Well, Noah’s cooking process turned into a comedy of errors. From fumbling with utensils to an overly enthusiastic flip that sent a patty splitting, it was less "gourmet chef" and more "campfire slapstick." But in the end, the cheeseburgers were perfect-charred edges, gooey cheese, and the kind of tasty flavor you can only get from cooking in the wild.
The next morning, it was time to head home. But if you thought the adventure ended there, think again. The Holcomb Valley Trail had a few more surprises in store.
Heading back down, they encountered obstacles that were even trickier than the way up. The Scion struggled to climb over steep rutted obstacles, leaving a plume of dust in its wake. With a mix of careful navigation and a few well-timed pushes, they managed to conquer the trail once again.
So, what’s the takeaway from Noah and Chris’s Big Bear Lake escapade? It’s simple: sometimes the best adventures are the ones that don’t go as planned. From detours and off-road challenges to battling the elements and laughing over camping cheeseburgers, this trip was a reminder to embrace the unexpected.
If you’re looking to escape the daily grind and make some unforgettable memories, grab a map (and maybe a sturdier vehicle), find a trail, and see where it takes you. Because, as Noah and Chris proved, the best stories often start with a little bit of chaos.
Ready to plan your own Big Bear adventure? Don’t forget to pack a sense of humor, a love for the outdoors, and maybe an extra cheeseburger or two.

Och łał.. Moje spodnie 💩..
Krass , wahnsinnig und wunderschön abenteuerlich.
Didn't look too bad coming out of tunnel and crossing bridge, even tho I'd be bricking it 💩 seeing bridge when you got off bike 🤮 NO way I'd be going back over it!
It is north america but if your from the usa you know san diego is in the south west of the United states of america. Just saying 😅
Glad to see in the comments that its being maintained. That is a work of art and deserves to be preserved. Greetings from england!
WOW…
That would be so cool
Look at the rails when they stop. Not shiney. Aint no train been by in years. I hope the little girl has calmed down by now.
Rather go over it quik with a Bike, than on that train ... 😂😂 ha...ha....ahhh
Good-looking pond and that fresh water crab
Reminds me of stand by me
Onawa trestle , Maine
That does look reasonably stable. A train... Not so much anymore.
Where's this location? Knoxville, or cow mountain?
Me acordé de la pelicula de las arañas
Oh lowd 😂
Cool 😎
These red dead mods are getting out of hand
Is this near the tunnel that collapsed a while back
Or sooner I'm afraid of
Americans are the best.
When they make NO NOISE, you are falling down. That rider has no brains, huh?
I guarantee you'll sleep well without ride
The right up in the mountains
Playing with fire thats a main line for sure. When the train comes youre gonna get smeared off the track.
Awesome
Reminds me of Red Dead
The highest wooden railroad trestle in the western hemisphere used to be the Kinzua bridge in Pennsylvania. But a tornado blew it over. 😢
The faster you go, the smoother the ride, ive crossed many trestles, i speak from experience
We stayed at a resort in san diego near the border. One morning we walked out to this bridge. Very impressive and quiet. Watch for rocks falling from the ceiling they can really mess you up
WHAT!...haven't u watched Stand By Me😬
I dont like it when the train comes
Ooh lord is right
The area is beautiful
ryantreyhan(going off the top of my head) rode on this on a little cart
Looks like you have done that before.
Hold the camera straight
Well at least it up and having fun .
Oh sht, VR golf
What amazon expects from its flex drivers
Those rails look waay too shiny for my taste
It certainly must be used alot in old westerns. Similarly the sand dunes stretch many many miles and buried amongst them remnants of old hollywoodlands presence.
I'm surprised some dirt bike riding meth head hasn't burned that bridge that's how those people are out there
This scene reminds me of the dam section in Half Life 1
STOP talking about my girlfriend like that! ❤
Is that the 'Pull out method'?
Beautiful, my girlfriend does the same. ❤
Stand up.
Get on track. Ps i have an off road bike with the number plates "TRACK"...
What is in the sky at the end of this video?
Looks like where I was born in arizona
