    There is a big revival of paganism among our communities currently, because intelligent and sensitive people have been drawn away from the church. It is contrary to the atheism we saw over the past 20 years or so, but it is almost like young people would rather worship nothing (i.e reimaginated idols of so called ancient gods) than come to the church to worship christ. I do not think the reformist attitude some parts of the church have helped at all. People, especially young people with families, want tradition and historical roots. Not "progress" for the sake of progress. My two cents.

    Honestly I can't thank you enough. Meditation has helped me psychologically. But I stopped for the past few weeks as I watched videos on it not being a practise Christians should do (from random people on youtube). However, it is what drew me closer to God, I felt the happiest (most peaceful) so, when I heard that I should not meditate I felt lost. Thank you for your guidance. I learned three things: - How to meditate properly - Being catholic I should look for what someone who has devoted their life to God thinks. - Emptying my mind is not an evil practise, if it is helping me, leading to a more positive peaceful life. I shall continue, but also try to guide it more towards God's words.

    Perhaps if they are reminded how to receive our Lord everytime, before communion to bow and respond with the wonderful prayer AMEN, as with one of the priests I have served with, they will be more aware of the presence of our Lord in the Holy Host. With this reminder, it improved their attitude in receiving our Lord. Thanks for the inspiring message.

    But what Jesus did was to nullify the whole “idea” of Jews being God’s specially chosen people. That was a self serving man made myth that lead to catastrophic events. It is impossible to treat people the way Jesus spoke of if you actually believe that you are “superior” to them. Just witness the 28,000 Arab Palestinian civilians who have been murdered by the Israelis in recent months (14,000 of them being children). This is an abomination.

    not from your tradition so can't really say about yours, but "believing the right things and behaving the right way" is not now nor never has been how one becomes a Jew. One becomes a Jew by having a Jewish mother or having been adopted into the Jewish people (like Ruth and so many other converts throughtout time). If you are looking for a biblical basis fro this, both Yishmael and Yitchak were taught by Avraham, both circumcised, both made sacrifices, only difference was the mother. It may surprise you to know that the majority of Jews in the world do not believe in G-d or follow all the halachos of Shabbat, kashrut, etc. In fact we can't even agree what all those laws are. The conservative movement says that driving to Synagogue is ok on Shabbat. The orthodox say it is not. etc. If someone is a Jew and decides to practice another religion, they do not cease to be a Jew. They are still part of the people. A more modern example you may be familiar with is Cardinal Lustigar. While he voted in several conclaves and was a devout catholic, he was also still a Jew. Also St Edith Stein. Judaism is not now, and for most of it's history, has not saught converts. In fact today it is ritually discouraged. Judaism is not an exclusive religion (if we even are a religion, the concept of peoplehood is paramount with us). We believe the righteous of all nations have a place in the world to come. Righteousness is also described in much broader terms (seeking justice, not cutting the flesh off living animals, etc. basically the seven laws given to Noah). So the answer to your question fundamentally is not that you don't believe what Judaism teaches or practice the Mitzvot, but that you were not born to a Jewish mother (presumably, if you were born to a Jewish mother than you are Jewish whether you identify as such or not) . In talking to my christian friends I've realized this is a completely foreign concept to them as most major religions are belief based. There are countless examples of fully and quasi endogomous relgions around the world such as the Yazidis or Lakota, but for most it's a completely foreign concept. We are fundamentally a people first and then in a distant second place a relgion (or rather the spiritual practices of a distinct ethnic group). We don't have creeds, and like I said the majority of Jews in the world are outright athiests. That doesn't make them any less a part of our people (as numerous antisemites throughout history have been quick to point out).

      Dear @OhavYisrail, thank you so much for rich and detailed response. I learned a lot and I apologise for speaking out of ignorance. Your distinction between religion and peoplehood is lovely.

  • @נוריתאליזבתאבורמד-ז3י

    yes but you used the jewish faith to sprade it all over the world without it nor the church or islam would become the largest religion but in the end of times and inthis current time the salvation is comes from the jews

      Yes, we as Catholics say that God's promises to Israel were never rescinded, so our salvation does come from the fulfilment in Jesus of those promises.

  • @brightsides9400
    @brightsides9400 5 місяців тому

    All the elected 12 apostles including Jesus Christ were sent to the lost sheep of Israel. They preach the gospel of KINGDOM means heaven on earth promised to Jews & Jesus is the promised Messiah (christ, anointed King of Israel), not the gospel of GRACE. The gentile appointed apostle Paul alone preaches the gospel of GRACE (undeserved gift of God) & Rapture of believers (caught up in heaven) before 7 year tribulation. Great tribulation is appointed to restore fallen Israel from their sins, not for the redeemed Christ's blood bought church. Our salvation, forgiveness of sins, eternal life, abundant life on earth, everlasting life in heaven, gift & baptism of Holy spirit, peace with God of Abraham, Issac, Jacob (Israel) are rest in Lord Jesus Christ, but salvation is faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ done at cross (1 Corinthians 15:1-10, Romans 10:9-13, Ephesians 1:7-10) alone in the GRACE AGE, not through any works (old testament laws, circumcision, water baptism, sabbath, charity etc.). The moment a sinner who believes Jesus Christ is God in the flesh became lamb of God, died for my sins on behalf of me, shed innocent blood, buried & rose from the dead third day according to scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1-10) & confess with mouth “Jesus Christ is my Lord” (Romans 10: 9-10), then Holy spirit comes upon them & sealed for eternity. We must rightly divide the word of God.

    Thank you Fr Jim - this is a thought process I have contemplated for some time and not taken the opportunity to discuss: that God in his perfection might have hoped that humanity would find its love and reason for being through Jesus’s teachings and actions. Sadly it was not to be. Hypothetical, I realise Fr Jim, by extension, had Jesus been accepted, then He would not have needed to offer his death for the sins of the world and our redemption would be achieved without the violence and horror of His crucifixion and there would have been heaven on earth with Jesus Christ as King of all. The spreading of the Good News would still have been needed to the corners of our planet but that story and Jesus’s experiences could’ve been so different for us to read and reflect on now, as we prepare again for our Easter celebrations. Blessings at Easter.

    Father, what did you by your comment about struggling with people calling priests “Father?” Do you believe this shouldn’t be done?

    • @frjimmckeon
      @frjimmckeon 8 місяців тому

      Hello, yes, this is a challenge for the Church, not just for me. It's clear in Matthew 23:9 Jesus says "call no man on earth your father" and this is in a passage about not giving church leaders honorific titles "call no one your teacher" because he envisages a "brotherhood of believers". I think it matters less what we call our leaders though than how we actually relate. And I think adults calling their priest "father", especially when he's half their age can keep people spiritually juvenile if they think that the priest's prayers are somehow better than theirs. The point of the homily is to encourage people to recognise their baptismal dignity and the priesthood which flows from their baptism. I love praying with my parishioners, but I want them to also pray priestly prayers of intercession for one another, not just default that to me.

    Shouldn't the Church have Sunday school for children which may involve families too? Currently catechists have only 30 minutes a week to instruct children and with time spent on checking rolls etc. only leaves 20 minutes at the most. That's not enough time for teaching and allowing the wonderful Bible stories to sink in. With the families involve don't you think that'll be more effective?

    • @frjimmckeon
      @frjimmckeon 8 місяців тому

      It sounds like you are a school catechist, and for that, thank you! Yes, it is such a limited time frame but we are lucky to still have access to teach scripture at all, so we want to treasure that opportunity. Countries which don't have school SRE like Vietnam and India (and probably many others) do have after school hours religion classes based in the parish. I agree that the involvement of families is much more effective. But rather than have more lessons for the children , my preference is that we work to empower parents to be the first teachers of faith to their children so that they can teach and model faith and Christian virtue to their children. This is the one thing which we know really works.

    Broadly agree on a philosophical level, but the Pope's guidance on that particular issue is happening in a unique and alarming climate. My sisters came home from Catholic schools with "gender unicorn" worksheets; lesbian guidance counselling; and an English coordinator who said, verbatim: "I churn out [of this course] little 3rd-wave feminists." I don't know that reaching out to lgbtq activists who hate me, my family, and everything we hold dear would be high on my priority list. I realise these examples are anecdotal, but I'm guessing that's the kind of thing that made people disgruntled. Nobody wants to think the Church itself might be headed down that path, like all other institutions have...

But even if they did, loving your enemy is key to following Jesus.

    • @anthonyreed480
      @anthonyreed480 9 місяців тому

      @frjimmckeon I'd read it, I agree it reads as pretty uncontroversial. Nevertheless, I'll stand by my point that they hate Christians, and if I start sending you links to prove it you're going to need an expandable SD memory card to hold the sheer volume of data, lol. I "love" those enemies, in the sense that I pray for their souls, but we needn't take advice from people who don't mean to help us. That is to say, when activists argue for the "liberalisation" or "modernisation," etc., of the church, it's not because they want the church to thrive - quite the opposite. I move in these political circles, they look at the church with sneering derision [at best].

We do need to stretch ourselves. Even now, I often remind myself that interactions are more about the other person - how we make them feel acknowledged and valued. Every day I ask, "Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace and love. May everyone I meet sense Your warm presence and joy in my smiles and greetings." You certainly walk the talk on this one, Fr Jim. I pray that more priests will share it.

    I truly believe she's in heaven, and I'm glad she believed it, too. 👍

    Like you, I saw my Mum a day or two before she died. My Mum loved Jesus and Mary and the Catholic Church. In fact Mum loved all people and was loved. I danced at her funeral while my brothers and sisters pulled long faces. I am the only family member who has not abandoned the Catholic Church. Yes I am proud of my Church and cant wait to go to Heaven. Abortion, Euthanasia and gay relationships come from Hell. Why do our Shepherds dance around the truth? Dont come up for Holy Communion if you have not been to Confession. Dont have Holy Communion if you are divorced and remarried. Dont have Holy Communion if you dont believe it is Jesus you are consuming. Priests need to have the guts to speak up. Often they dont. I personally know a Monsignor who admitted that his Church attendance would fall if he spoke the truth. TOUGH. Fewer hypocrites and more real Catholics is what is required. A Priest with balls once told us we were all Saints. None of us had been to Confession for months or years. So we must be all Saints.
