Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) is a not-for-profit Section 30 company and a public benefit organisation which was originally formed in May 2000 following the demise of the National Symphony Orchestra. The JPO went into business rescue in 2012, however, it was relaunched in August 2017 with a revitalised vision, a new brand identity and a diverse board of directors which is comprised of captains of industry and credible community leaders. The board is chaired by former Deputy Chief Justice, Dikgang Moseneke, with seasoned arts manager and Julliard School trained singer, Bongani Tembe, as the Chief Executive and Artistic Director. The relaunch of the JPO affirmed the organisation’s aspiration to be internationally recognised for its artistic excellence, innovation, education initiatives and community engagement programmes.

This week, we are pleased to present the 3rd and 4th Movements from Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2, as part of our At Home with the JPO Series. The performance under the baton of Daniel Boico was part of the Summer Symphony Season 2019 at the Linder Auditorium.
Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 takes us on an immense journey, with the 3rd Movement pushing towards the triumphant 4th Movement, with its sweeping melody and rich orchestration that always raises the goosebumps on our arms.

There are too many great piano concertos to say, which is the greatest. Each has its own greatness. I'm more Rach fan, so Rach 2nd and 3rd would always be near to my heart. I like Grieg's Piano Concerto as I do Chopin's Piano Concerto.

WOW! This has always been my favorite Concerto! I was introduced to Classical music while in the U. S. Navy! One of my favorite sailor friends invited me to his home for dinner and his wife played this very same masterful concerto on their baby grand Piano. I could not believe I was hearing this live in person as I only heard it on plastic, 78 rpm records on my grammar phone!
