Again thanks to everyone who has recently subscribed!
My channel is an esoteric mix of stuff I like, all sorts. Plus my own videos. Again various subjects but mostly to do with motorcycles and travel by motorcycle.
'Valve Geek' 'cause I build (or have built) vacuum tube amplifiers. Always have been quite heavily into DIY Hi-Fi. Else most stuff here is motorbikes or cars, music etc.

First time try out of the new to me Helm Compact 2. Will this be THE one? Conclusion (EDIT): well the next day the rain was tipping down, and the cheap tarp ('MFH basha') held it at bay. So I think that's a go-er. Finding out how the microphone adaptor affects the behaviour of the camera and whether it can detect if an actual external microphone is plugged in. It can't. Then, trying out a new different microphone that does not need yet another adaptor (4 contact to 3 contact. GoPro adaptor require 3 contact, aka 'normal' stereo 3.5mm jack).

What was that all about !!!
I'm restoring a ww2 generator. My uncle was with the engineers when Germany were retreating and blowing up bridges. He brought it home and gave it to me in 1975
Need to know more of the 360/362 series 🤔
who live in watlington 😂😂
Change of topic: I Iike your windshield. What brand and type is it? Are you satisfied? Thanks in advance!
Hi, thanks for your interest - it is a Puig Touring 1 - works well enough for me - as the 'bars are quite high I found a lot of wind pressure in the chest area sometimes and pulling on the arms. The screen takes that off. Helmet is mostly in normal air flow. I had the same screen on the Ural, for the same reason. Hope that helps. 😊
@@valvegeekThat's exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for. I think I'll give the screen a try. Thank you!
Nothing like being prepared hey?
👍🙂
Has the crank a early type small little end ,i have a early good crank if its any use
Hi, thanks no it's a late type.
Looks a good ride out. I wish that i could have made it but a change of date and other commitments dictated otherwise.Nice one Ken and all involved.
Thanks for watching! 😊❤
Very nice.
This brings back some great memories. I rode tens of thousands of miles in my dad's sidecar outfit, including a two week trip to Switzerland, Austria and Italy in '62. I've tried to remember the sensations of riding 'in the chair' and this has helped a lot. Thanks.
Thanks for that, glad to be of assistance! 😁
A very nice selection Mike ! Looks like a great trip.
Thank you! 👍😊❤
What’s cruising speed with a passenger?
Honestly, don't know (yet?)
Enjoyed your vid thankyou x
Very nice
When I saw the thumbnail I thought that some-one had put a chair on a Bantam! What is the soundtrack?
LOL - UA-cam free music library - first is Marianas by Quincas Moreira, second is Cylinder Eight by Chris Zabriskie. HTH. 😁
Thanks for recording it ,I'll be back soon, vlc299g
Nice ride.
Thanks!
Hi Mike, another good journey avoiding habitation. Enjoy your stay.
Ta Phil. How you doing now?
Very interesting . Thanks for posting as I was thinking of putting a chair on a MG Breva.
Got the same tent and the same light that’s hanging up
What brake pedal extender have you fitted?
Hi, it is 'Motorcycle Brake Pedal Cover CNC Pad For Harley Sportster XL 883 1200 V-Rod' - eBay number: 296268339338. Needs a bit of tweaking to make it fit, I built it up with small cut pieces of rubber sheet underneath and needed longer screws. Thanks for your interest. 👍😁
Many thanks for taking the time to reply! And it's good to know that I'm not the only one who finds the cadwell brake pedal just a bit too low!
Hi Mike, will you be off on your travels again soon ? How very civilised, not drinking beer from the tin. (LOL)
Yes, and yes! 😄
that injector is a nightmare especially when the plastic becomes more brittle over time, they feel so flimsy & cheep, having said that i still wouldn't swop my tempest scrambler for any other 125
Thanks for this, we are planning to visit Wolfhampcote soon!
did you not have a Bantam to go on ?
Can I swap out the fuel tank on a vtx honda for a tank from a harley with a fuel gauge
very nice video ,I have the same bike I love it 😁👍👍
Would be good to see what upgrades can be added. Gear indicator, cameras, extra lights or mirrors. Also OBD socket ?
Thanks for posting this. I was particularly interested as three of us did the entirety of the Gt. North Road on bikes in July - Yorkshire, London, Edinburgh, Yorkshire. I'm old enough to remember when sections of it were the A1, back in the 60s/70s. The urbam stages were a drag, particularly as we were unlucky with the weather for much of the route.
Thanks for that! 👍❤😊
Hi Again, another interesting ride out.
Hi Phil, glad you liked it thaks for posting.
I had the same instinct looking for a mirror, so I got a cheap handlebar end unit off Amazon.😊
Good effort, Mike. Beautiful lanes there !
Thanks for your interest! 😁❤
Hi Mike, nice day for a ride out. See you at Owston.
Yo Phil, thanks for watching, 👍 yep catch you at Owsters! 😁❤
hi what's the backing track please?
Hi, had to find my notes, the 3 tracks are: Unicorn Heads - Lazy Boy Blues Noir Et Blanc Vie - Sweet Home Analoga Nat Keefe - Late Night Drive 😁
Sobering when you're reminded that an icon of the early 70s screen is just human. He's immortalised, at least to me in UFO. 😔
Thank you for this video, it's definitely helpful and helped sway my decision to buy an AJS Clubman second hand. I definitely like the idea of a list of modifications you must do to a new bike. I noticed your rear light is not stock and looks cleaner. Was it a direct swap? (not requiring modifications). I couldn't quite tell if it was the AJS round brake light from their scramblers. I'd love to know as I think it looks very nice.
Hi there! What is the oil type you use? I bought 2021 Moto Guzzi V7 Special. It is only got 100 miles. I will collect the bike next week. I will change the engine oil because it´s too old. I guess the best option is to use engine break-in oil 600 miles and then switch to synthetic oil. I alredy bought LUCAS ENGINE BREAK-IN OIL SEA 20W-50
Hello, handbook says SAE 10W - 60 - JASO MA, MA2 - API SG, Gutsibits sell it as: ENI 528691 i-Ride moto GP 10W-60 (also Amazon), so that is what I use. (Gutsibits order code: OIA01051). 😊 I think 20-50 will be too thick when cold and not thick enough when hot.
Will be in the UK on my Ural next week for a few days then again at the end of August!
Fab, wow that must have taken some organizing! 😁👍 Thanks for your interest. ❤
@@valvegeek If you only knew, and still cheaper than renting a bike for the same period of time... That is insane. Adventure starts in the AM.... and yeah, I do watch your videos, all of them... Sidecars going down the road is good for me...
Hi Mike, I enjoyed following your walk. Hope the toes are up to it now.
Hi Phil, yes nearly back to normal! Thanks for your interest. 👍 😊
I adored him in UFO and I don't live far. Would love to visit him one day to say hello
Thanks very much for these videos. I’m watching them (I’m halfway through Part 2 as I write) because my fuel pump is sometimes struggling to make enough pressure, and so I’ve bought a replacement from AJS and am contemplating fitting it myself. Having seen the videos once, I think I’ll watch them again before deciding whether I should do it myself, which I’d prefer because I can give everything a good clean and assess the hoses etc, or ask the really smashing mechanic I use to do it. So, thanks again.
Thanks for your interest. Changing the pump is really quite straightforward, it's removing the tank that was the puzzler! Lke I said in video, best to cut the hose to the injector (but have a spare to put back on!) make sure the filter is removed from its bracket, then it should be on its way. New clamps on the new hose when you replace. The piece of hose I ordered from AJS web site fitted, the other hose that I had, that should have been identical, wouldn't.
You are 1 of only 3 or 4 people that have made videos on this generator. I believe I happened upon a design flaw in the Coarse Attenuation switch that prevents it from outputting a signal when the Low and Middle outputs are selected. I implemented an easy workaround and am anxious to hear other's opinions on the approach - or offer better ideas. I made a clip on my channel that shows the approach. If interested, you can jump in to 6 minutes and 41 seconds to see where I address it. Since there are only a handful of people who have made a clip, I'd be interested in finding out if you are seeing the same problem - where RF output only appears on the High setting..
Hi, thanks for your interest. 1. You seem not to have noticed that originally, before you modified it, by removing 2 resistors, the output is a pi attenuator, the arrangement of resistors is not a mistake. 2. The pi attenuator is provided for making very small amplitude signals, such as you would get from an aerial antenna. Therefore, the RF1 could be plugged directly into a sensitive receiver input without overloading it. 3. No, the RF1 was never high performance equipment, so it isn't perfect, but basically does the job. Better than none at all. 😊 4. For example, bear in mind resistor value tolerences, so it's quite possible that 680 Ohms measures as 620, if the value tolerance is 10% (I'm just guessing that it is). Also, if your meter is accurate... 5. Given that the output is a pi attenuator, and that the attenuated levels are very small, I don't see a problem. 6. There is no 6. 😁 Pretty sure I tried the lower output levels into my Tektronix 'scope and if memory serves there was some noise at the lowest setting, in other words the 'scope was also getting stray radio and EMF from local SMPS etc. Hope this helps!
@@valvegeek Thank you. Much appreciated. It isn't that I didn't notice it it's that I didn't know it. I'm just starting to learn. So the lower two coarse settings would work as designed in the right circumstances? In other words, were you able to get the Low and Middle coarse settings to work on your RF-1 for their intended use? I've pinned out the video until I understand this issue better. I removed only one of the resistors. EDIT: Wait, I see. You were able to read a signal on those settings on your Tektronix. Okay. I'll put the resistor back in and give it a try. I'll let you know... Thanks again.
@@pinballpsycho Hello again - no problem - I found a pi attenuator calculator on Internet, there are several. The RF1 has a 2-steps attenuator, and with the original resistor values, the calculator gives -30 dB reduction for each Middle and Low stage (they're identical). So, -60 dB after both at the Low setting, i.e. 1,000:1 reduction (20 dB = X10). So at the Low range, suppose the output from the pot was 1V, the output from the socket would be 1 mV. Also, each stage of the attenuator presents a source impedance of nearly 50 Ohms, (actually 42 or so), this is roughly compatible with coax cable such as is typically used for antenna feeds, which is useful. As I said I'm sure I got outputs from middle and low - in any case, the way the resistors are configured, it can't not work - unless there's a problem with the switch, e.g. dirty contacts - so then just depends how sensitive your equipment is. Hppe that helps. 👍😊
@@valvegeek Thanks again, very cool. I did finally find a clip where someone was using the middle setting. I;m not sure what the power level is but he is reading a distinct wave on his scope. I've sent out a question to see if he can tell me what he has. ua-cam.com/video/70IeN34ln8k/v-deo.html
@@pinballpsycho I did some more research - so each stage of attenuation is -30 dB, this is the dBV scale, for Voltage levels. 30 dB is a ratio of 31.6:1. Two of those gives 1,000:1 (31.6 is sqr of 1,000). So if the fine control pot is set to output 1V, then Middle will give you 30 mV and Low will give you 1 mV. Hope that makes sense. 😊
Thanks for visiting Ed's grave. It certainly is a beautiful spot. The quote on the headstone is from the old American/Canadian song 'Red River Valley.' "From this valley they say you are going; We shall miss your bright eyes and your smile..."
This is amazing. Thank you.
he's got the steering wheel in the glove compartment! а так конечно да, у каждого шивората сой выворот)
Interesting ride Mike, I know most of those roads, particularly Dunmow to Ongar. I thought you might be heading to the secret nuclear bunker. Have you been there ? regards Philip.
Hi Phil, thanks, not yet! Didn't have too much time at that precise moment.
Thanks so very much for this. I've been an Ed Bishop fan for many years and always kept in mind where he was buried. I'm in Canada so I always was aware of the huge distance to cover to ever visit him, even tho I was actually born not far from here. This made me feel closer to him again. Cheers!
Great video mate. Do they provide you with the beds or did you have to bring your own ? 👍🏼
Only a fold-up bunk bed. They used to supply bedding, but not since Covid is around, so you have to bring your own. That was no problem I just used my camping stuff. 😁
@@valvegeek ok brilliant! Thanks for getting back to me, I have booked it 👍🏼
