8 Ways God of War Excels at Storytelling

Just finished God of War on the PS4 and I am blown away at this game's narrative. The writing, characters, and overall plot are phenomenally handled and despite the somewhat shorter game length, I find this game's story to be so compelling. So let's talk about 8 ways in which God of War's storytelling excels so much. I also tried a going off of my head instead of a script and it definitely show...

Also, fun fact, every region's threat music is unique and it's awesome, even if it doesn't directly correlate to the enemy types there's different ones in each region so it kinda can at times.

Thank you SO MUCH. for making this video. I have no idea how music theory works but still find ways to appreciate the music of Klonoa even if I do not understand a lot of how it was made and how the different instruments complement eachother. This video definitely put how I feel about these tracks into words that made sense

I'm internally grateful for Nintendo to have the right to remake not only the first but also the second game, and having more people recognize the game as a whole. Because I may have only grown up with the second game before the remake, but seeing how many others are appreciating the soundtrack of the second game as well also brings me a lot of joy, since it's just an over the top amazing, wacky and going with the flow type of good of an experience. Always something I love to listen to from time to time, always bringing me back to childhood nostalgia. ✊🏽😔✨✨✨✨

To give Kabbu credit, since he's based (I think) on characters like the Power Rangers and Kamen Rider, him getting a sudden power boost at the end of his arc could actually make sense as a reference.

The music is so sad and repetitive because the context of the story bleeds directly into this. Cvstodia is a land of sadness, misery and ciclical suffering. These are dark times for that land because it's in the full grasp of the miracle and the high wills: there is simply no hope. When you compare the music of the first game to the sequel, you will notice inmmediately that it's quite different, with the implication that its more zesty and energetic because the miracle doesn't pull the strings completely anymore, abd therefore the land, albeit not completely healed, it's more free and the denizens seem to be focusing in more things than just bearing the suffering of their existence (you have the sculptor and her daughter who try to create beautiful art despite their cirsunstances, and escolastico and his brother,.who like to travel and sell stuff) Just my two cents here.

amazing video! klonoa as a series needs more attention, ESPECIALLY lunatea's veil. on another note its fitting that the kingdom of sorrow's theme have sections of music from the first game. note the kingdom's actual name, "hyuponia"... as in huepoe, all the empty rocking chairs in the level, and how uncannily similar the king's appearance is to klonoa, specifically from the first game with the collar and smaller, cat-like pupils... klonoa is facing down his own sorrow carried with him from phantomile, incarnated into the sad, lonely king.

I'm assuming the disc-hitting-the-cave-spike-sound is not random but dictated like the spinning ghost mouse heads make sounds. the mice have 8 directions that have 8 sounds depending on when they hit an area, and make a sound accordingly. like the flute. I think it's the same with the frisbee-disc. it spins, and whenever it hits something it makes a sound according to where on the 8 areas it hits as it's spinning.

This game is very artistically unique, which is just the kind of quality I seek in games constantly. Always looking for that perfect hidden gem that touches my heart in a new and inspiring way. My thoughts on the soundtrack are that even though it's so simplistic, subtle, and quiet, those exact traits are what set the ominous tone of its beautiful world. A deep well untouched by the universe outside. Its very own universe hidden away in a dark and quiet place, full of shadow and wonder. It's like looking into a stark black forest at night with a sky of stars that rotate at a slowness that makes it SEEM still. But there's so much more than what meets the eye. Exactly the game's message right there. I truly honestly wish there were more games like this one. The ability to expand one's perspective on reality in a video game is astounding and worth every experience.

Absolutely beautiful video. Would love to hear more thoughts about the game from your perspective. I came here searching for a breakdown of the title theme and I got exactly that! I was wondering if it sounded like a certain... flute song that we get to learn but I don't think there's enough similarities. Love the little nod to Mother 1 though. This game was a blast from start to finish.

I watched this thinking you had perhaps discovered secret music notation in the artwork (I wouldn't be surprised if that is still the case!) and yet I was not disappointed you didn't. The music and other audio in this game are stunning. Everything fits so perfectly. My favourites are the beat of the chameleon as it feeds, and the rhythm of the yellow and green platforms that raise you up by different amounts, especially the staircases that you glide upwards on instead of jumping from step to step. There's unexpected musicality in other areas too, like the dog's barks or the firecracker bursts for example. I feel there could easily be some flute sequences in things like this that are yet to be found. Edit: I just remembered another favourite musical motif. There is a piece of background music near the end of the game (or between endings might be more accurate) that reminds me of the underwater music in Jaws. Not the scary Dum-Dum theme, but the slightly suspenseful, bad feeling, theme. It fits the mood really well.

10:43 This melody plays another major role in the track: that melody is actually a enharmonically equivalent version of the game's title jingle. Another version of the game's jingle plays in "Mirage" (the song of The Forgotten Path). Other than that, fantastic analysis of the soundtrack, even though Lunatea's Veil has a lot of material worth discussing, Door to Phantomile still has it's goodies that are worth discussing on (like the rhythmic consistency between the level tracks, aka a lot of syncopation). Cheers!
