Collage in Brouwer's First Guitar Sonata, Movement 1, 'Fandangos y boleros'
This video is part of a blog: ymguitarguide.com/2024/10/19/brouwers-combinatorial-art/. This is an introduction to Brouwer's pervasive use of collage (cross-cutting, montage, modular writing), using the first movement of his First Guitar Sonata (1990) as an example. The excerpts come from Ricardo Gallén's recording of all the Brouwer Sonatas. The Beethoven excerpt is from the complete Beethoven Symphonies set by John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique.

Be sure to watch this in HD! This is an animation of a famous musical example in Edward Cone's “Stravinsky: The Progress of a Method,” Perspectives of New Music 1, no. 1 (1962): 18-26, doi.org/10.2307/832176. Cone's example divides the piece into different strata that play in alternation, evolve and combine. Each passage is showed in a highly reduced form. As each one starts, it lights up in th...

A talk given for the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society on April 10, 2021. Good voicing is an integral part of good tone production. Whether it is an individual chord or the texture of an entire passage-accompanied melody, counterpoint, chorale, and so on-there are endless ways of balancing the sounds, each with its own expressive effect. In this practical talk, I offer a toolkit of useful v...

In 2020, the Denver Guitar Festival was held online and masterclasses happened over Zoom. In this class, I work with Thatcher Harrison on this elaborate allemande. After a couple of segments devoted to accuracy of pitches and rhythms, we work on uncovering the structure of the music. I suggest a way of practicing that will help with all aspects of learning and interpretation.

A masterclass at the Denver Guitar Festival 2020, held over Zoom and hosted by the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music. The lesson took place from Denver to Serbia, and the sound during the lesson is often unclear, but it is always possible to hear what we were discussing: rhythm and pulse, the role of the bass, harmonic shape, motivic shape, and structural melody.

Online Masterclass: The Prelude to Bach's Cello Suite I with Matthew Brill
Переглядів 4534 роки тому
This masterclass was part of the Denver Guitar Festival 2020. Matthew Brill plays the Prelude to Bach's First Cello Suite BWV 1007, in Stanley Yates's arrangement. The first thing to say about this video is that the sound quality is quite degraded at times, as can happen in online lessons. Matt’s initial performance is prerecorded with much better quality sound. This is an excerpt from a longer...

Improvisation as a Way of Knowing: Baroque
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
Classical musicians are taking ever more interest in incorporating improvisation into their programs. But is there also benefit in using improvisation to develop an interpretation of notated repertoire? In this talk, I'll suggest that improvisation can be a powerful practice tool. After a discussion of Bach's 4th Cello Prelude, I'll sketch out some of the steps towards learning to improvise in ...
