DOCKLANDS HISTORY WALK FOR LEIGH BELFAIRS U3A
Переглядів 1889 років тому
The Georgian architecture of Limehouse is a fascinating contrast to the high-rise office buildings which dominate the Canary Wharf skyline. It's just one of the historical features which make this London Footsteps guided walk of the Docklands area so interesting.

The memorial to the 173 people who died at Bethnal Green station on 3rd March 1943. They were crushed and suffocated on the stairs leading to the station below which was being used as an underground shelter. After the siren sounded, warning of a possible air raid, people hurried to the entrance of the shelter. Guns suddenly sounded from a nearby anti aircraft battery. People hurried forward. A ...

A POPPY FROM MR. PUTIN?

When this tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice is completed there will be 888,246 ceramic poppies in the moat of the Tower of London. Perhaps those who think that war is the solution to so many evils should come along and acknowledge the bullet and bomb solve nothing.

MILLWALL FANS FIGHTING AT WEMBLEY CUP SEMI FINAL
Think it's Millwall fighting themselves!!!!!... bolox, 2 brave or stupid Wigan fans causing the trouble. Millwall smacked the sh*t out of them . Five Millwall in court and 2 Wigan in court. Ok.
It's odd that despite all their hardships, they have smiles on their faces. When I look at the British today, most people look miserable and are broken. What has been done to them I wonder?
The best pubs were in Bethnal Green
I believe the pub at 8.34 is the Lord Hood, my family had that pub late 60's early 70's, not sure exactly. Not the best place in the world but it was home for a while. Thank you for the memories.
Good to hear from you Frank. That video wasade a few years ago when I was a London Tour guide and lecturer. Stilling leading occasional tours of.the east end and City of London. Great city. Glad it brought back a few memories for you. Thanks for the post. David
@@ancientblue70 I only visit the UK and London every couple of years as I have lived abroad for 30 years, but plan to spend a day wandering the east end when I am next there. My grandaughter who was born abroad lives and works in UK and loves it there. I feel nostalgic for my past, but never regret leaving. Thanks again for an accurate look at a long gone community.
It is and was the lord hood.in the early 80s was managed by a couple les and Georgina..
somebody just spilt someones pint
I worked in Bethnal Green as a milkman in the 60's. How I think back with nothing but affection for those smashing East End people who were the salt of the earth. Even though it's been 60 years I sometimes pass places where I delivered and unfortunately, the area is not a cockney stronghold anymore.
The whole of the East End is unrecognisable now since I was a kid and we all know why 😡⚒️⚒️
It never used to be multi cultural thats a myth. There was some but not as much as is pretended
I lived in Teesdale st for 15 years from 1957
Is multi-culture a good thing?
Its becoming mono culture
I live in Bethnal Green, and I like it...
No

Fantastic post this, cheers David
Long shot, I suppose; but does anyone have photos of Doveton Street, from before those flats went up after the war? I've been searching for months, now...
The east end in the years was no harder than any other city which had docks life was hard cities like Glasgow and Liverpool had it much worse all this (my generation grew up playing on bombsites and struggling to get enough to eat every working class bloke in those days got up to a bit of skuldugery some a lot more than others some grew out of it when they started going steady or doing well at work other people preferred or were earning better in the life
I'm an American. My family is from Leeds, but my family had a store in Bethnal Green. He met his wife in Bethnal Green. She was a weaver. They left London in 1785 for America. I would love to visit. Great video sir! Thanks from this American geezer. So happy to know my Greatx10 grandma is from there. From what I've learned, she was one tough old bird!
Your comments are interesting and appreciated. Bethnal Green was well-known as one of the main centres for the Huguenot silk weavers who came from France in the 17th century to avoid religious persecution. There is a large local park known as Weaver's Fields in Bethnal Green. I have a good friend who was born in Bethnal Green and her parents had a pub - the Prince of Wales - in Bishops Avenue. She lived there are also served behind the bar when she was a young girl. As a City of London tour guide I often take groups of people for walks around the area.
@@ancientblue70 thank you sir! I now know who I will have show me around when I get a chance to visit. My 10th great grandfather was from Leeds. His "consort" a.k.a. grandma was from Bethnal Green. I'm sure she would not take any guff from her husband. They immigrated to Virginia, then in 1829 they moved to Indiana. Which is where I currently live. His name was Martin Browne. I am interested to see if I can find the location of his business there in London. Hope you have a wonderful evening. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.

Good vlog for someone in their 70’d
I find the so called security guards we find festering our streets have about as much knowledge as to the law as I have no qontum physics... Sorry about spelling if incorrect... There is no law in existence which prevents you from filming... If there was security cameras owned by police councils and security companies would need to be deactivated... There are contradictions to this.. If you are filming a military base or officaly sensitive location, if you are planning a crime.but if you are you are detained by a warented officer of the crown... Aka a copper... A security Gaurd has as much power as my Antie Mable.. She like you and I can detain... Not attack, not beat up, not steal from.... Detain a person who is known to have commited a crime... Photography of any sort is a civil matter unless as I've indicated involves state secrets etc... If they object they need to approach a court with evidence your recording their image is detrimental to them... But they must be able to show to the court you intended from the on set of filming to damage their social position reputation or alike.. ..or like wise their business or their earning potential... During the summer holidays last year I joined a friend as we watched his children play in the swings slides and alike..as we chatted I mentioned I had experienced a problem with my phone... The phone was facing the ground to his feet... Some moronic rightious idiot approached us and claimed we were peodophiles... I'm.glad my dog went to bit him ...hes OK he had his jabs a month or two earlier but the vet suggested we give him an additional treatment for fleas.. My mate kids came running over to find out why the nasty man was shouting at their dad.... He quickly sulked away nodoubt with his copy of ..the audi drivers guide to being a knob with the feature on leather undies for working clergy shoved down his trousers... I'm sorry but not every one sitting in parks near to the swings is there to hall kids...
Hurt or abuse kids.....
If it were not for that annoying background music, we could have heard and understood what he was reading.

millwall acrington stanley more like
Millwall lads bumming each other.
They must love eachother
Hey must love eachother
Losers in every way...
if theres no one else to fight we will fight each other
We may have lost the match, but that day was still a great experience for me. To see near to 32k Southend fans at one game is quite a sight for a club like us. Although not huge numbers, a very good effort from the Crewe fans that day too. A lot of "day trippers" from our end unfortunately, which didn't contribute too well to the atmosphere from the Southend end, but oh well! Disappointed to lose at Wembley, but for a club like Southend to get to Wembley in the first place is an achievement in itself, hopefully we can get there again one day, and get to see us win at Wembley. UTB!
Wow! Millwall did 'Wigan'.Obviously a top crew when they can do 'Wigan'.Bring on the girls.
Millwall tramp films other millwall tramps fighting...yawwwwn
Kick them out of football
Were the Millwall fans fighting each other?
No, 2 stupid Wigan fans thought they'd have a larff
Too short !
Brilliant! Its funny how 'things' can leave an indelible mark on our lives with their own personal history, and the memories they invoke. B-)
