Flight From Luxembourg. Was This the Worst WINDSHEAR I’ve Ever Had?
After a weekend in the City of Luxembourg, we returned to the UK in the Diamond DA40 but not without encountering a stiff headwind and a prolonged stretch of clear air turbulence.

Awesome video! I'd just like to point out that you should sensor all scenes where phonescreen is being captures. It might one day save you from unwanted messages+phonecalls. Or even exposing something you shouldnt.
Hi! Thanks for watching the video. I am glad you enjoyed that. You are right, it's just a fairly demanding task to process that through all the content as I do this outside of my full-time job. I'll look into it though.
@@TheFlyingVLOG It definately worth it! The internet is not a good place for private messages and images :(
@@Krutzo11 Unfortunately yes, the internet isn't the greatest of places.
Great video. Greetings from Luxembourg
Hello there! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
interesting video !
Thanks for the comment! I am glad you enjoyed it :)
You are a well greased team , all comes natural! :-)
Thank you mate! Glad you enjoyed this weeks vlog!
What is the ceiling altitude of your aircraft ?
16400ft :)
Another banger
Glad you enjoyed it Peter :) Thank you.
Nice video, funny, I fly out of southend a recognise the voices very well. How much was it to land and handle at Lux?
Thanks for watching :) Glad you enjoyed. Interesting that you say that, I too can always recognise there voices over the years. Total costs all in are about 275 EUR - you can see the full break down on my blog post. www.theflyingvlog.uk/flying-to-luxembourg/
@@TheFlyingVLOG thanks, I’ll look. A lot less than I thought.
Most big airports are in the £200-300 ballpark, except the big ones. Amsterdam being the exception, did you see my videos on that one?
@ no, I’ll go look.
Your videos are unreal ……. Your chat is better than a lot of the average people. Nice mate 👍🏼
Thanks for coming across! Hope you are enjoying the content. I really appreciate that comment. Thank you :)
Now I have been watching aviation videos here on youtube but have not come across your videos yet, until now! Nice flight, through a familiair area to me. I live in the southeast of the Netherlands just abt 8 km east of Maastricht Aachen Airport EHBK where Maastricht Control (Eurocontrol) is located. I have listened a lot to atc, already from the beginning back in the 80's of my aircraft spotters "carreer". And the OLNO sector (around LNO VOR) is a very busy peace of airspace. Cosat COA VOR is next to the Belgium city of Knokke in Belgium and also next to the border of the Netherlands in the south west. How I envy you guys with a plane and flying license that you can make these kind of trips.
Thanks for watching :) I am glad you have come across me, and I hope you enjoy the content I've got in store. I've not flown into EHBK yet but frequently pass there in the airways, although I believe this is the first time I've taken that routing via COA VOR as yes it's indeed a very bit of airspace and that routing towards the UK is rare for me. It's a great thing to do and I hope to inspire more people to do it.
I flew to EDKA a few months back. Lovely area to fly.
Nice! I've never been :)
Great approach and landing! LUX is my homebase where I did my PPL
Thank you for watching! LUX is indeed a great place, does your school still exist there?
@ yes they do, there are actually 2 of them. Advantage is the international environment and the other countries nearby
@@deniswelu6718 Yes that must make for a fun trip as you aren't far from some big named airports. What aircraft do they fly?
Always enjoy flying with you Robbie. Thanks for taking us all along with you both. Was Vanessa doing some revision at one point with the highlighting pen? Great when ATC acknowledge you isn’t it! 😊
Thanks for watching Tim! Glad you enjoyed it - it was a great trip. Yes Vanessa at that time was studying the theory for the PPL, a perfect opportunity to study. It's quite funny as I still don't know who it is but I love it.
very good vidéo and many thanks for sharing next time
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed :)
Challenging circumstances; The weather prediction for the flight back indicated a diminishing cold front, which could bring cumulonimbus clouds and rain showers. Additionally, there was a chance of later strong and gusty winds in the forecast. A low-pressure system situated over Iceland was creating significant headwinds for the return flight and worsening weather conditions later that day due to the advancing occlusion. An interesting Avionic fit, I did consider the Aspen units myself but eventually went down the Garmin route.
It does work well to be fair. I know there are some complaints RE Aspen's but we had them installed in Belgium and they did a great job. What Garmin did you have?
Great flying, at the end you mentioned flying to Europe in few hours, can you compare that to how much it costs to do a 4hr journey on the DA40? Maybe do a video on costs to Luxembourg in terms of fuel, landing fees etc.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed. If you check out the website, the blog's usually give an idea of costs. The LUX BLOG is currently WIP so hoping to release that soon. Will let you know.
Curious. Wouldn't FL150 be about what I would think would be the service ceiling for a DA40. What TAS do you get at that altitude?
The ceiling height for the DA40 is 16400ft so its pretty close.
This varies by degree but usually about 140KTAS at FL160 at 80% power. I've managed FL160 and that is usually okay too.
Yup it is sits at #95 in the list of runways by length at 13,130 ft with Ulyanovsk Vostochny Airport in Russia at 16,404 ft.
Indeed! But if you look, it's the longest in the EU.
@@TheFlyingVLOG not by any stretch the longest is :- Madrid-Torrejón Airport Spain 4,818 m 15,807. Second longest Madrid-Barajas Airport Spain 4,470 m 14,665ft. Third longest Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport France 4,215 m 13,829ft. And finally Luxembourg Airport Luxembourg 4,002 m 13,130 ft. Just thought you might wish to know the facts and update the title to "One of the longest" etc. as it would be a little more accurate. 😀
Hi Stephen! The title is "One of the longest" already :) but yes aware it's like 95th.
Always pleased to see you have another flight posted. Commented before on Vanessa but great for you that she enjoys flying with you so much and seems to be doing even more to help with camera work now as well as checklists. Great stuff Robbie! 👍
Thanks Tim! I am glad you are enjoying the vlogs and yes it's of much help and we've got many trips coming up together that I am looking forward to sharing.
This week's VLOG takes us to one of the world's longest runways in the heart of Europe. Find out how much it costs, in the BLOG www.theflyingvlog.uk/flying-to-luxembourg/
Only just found this channel Great vid! Do you have any videos going through how you file your flight plans ?
Thank you for finding the channel! I am thrilled you enjoyed this week's adventure. That's a good idea, and I'll try to get around to filming this winter.

Great video as always, thank you Robbie. I was interested in how the costs and handling get arranged and just seen this on your website Vlog, again very informative.
Thanks for watching! The BLOG is still a work in progress as I started a new job so couldn't get the BLOG out at the same time, but it will follow shortly explaining the costs and process involved at LUX.

I sub welcome LFSN
I've never been. Are customs not PPN 48?
@ PPR if you want coming in nancy essey LFSN
Can you remind me how much you paid in total for landing/handling/departure/airways?
Total Costs Amsterdam: EUR €409.19 incl VAT (£349.84)
@@TheFlyingVLOG that is pretty steep, but you got EHAM in your logbook now!
Yes, but considering the shear size of the place. It's not bad
Does DA 40 have rudder trim?
Thanks for watching. Unfortunately not.
I am curious where and who she’s sending 😂
That brought back some memories….cheers.
It's always a good spot to fly.
Pretty easy to fly to France for lunch. I have done it many times.
Totally agree! But there are far less options now.
@ Less Options?
Yes, less options in France now within 24hrs. Most are PPR 48hrs or even 72hrs.
LUH TOOOKAY. Not LUH TORKAY
It's probably my accent 😆
One of those videos that will make this channel mate! Love the personal touch that Vanessa gives too! You made the mundane trip to L2K work again!
Thanks Stefan! Glad you enjoyed it, I've done enough L2K and this is one that is set apart from the rest. and this was one of those ideas that is a big question in GA at the moment.
That’s a hell of a first date
We both laughed at that one :) haha!
Great that Vanessa enjoyed the flight so much. Nice to be able to share the experience. Thanks for posting Robbie.
Our pleasure! Glad you enjoyed watching :)
What a flight! An IR can be so useful. How come you abbreviate your callsign even if ATC decided not to, is that custom in the UK?
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it - I believe that it may have just been edited out of the video. The IR is very useful, especially on Intl flights.
You gave the CFE a TCAS RA haha
Haha! Bad timing as I think the chances are of an aircraft routing that way and someone on the SID in CAS at that time are rare. But happens all the time on the ILS apparently.
Haha yeh not your fault, just mad this outside CAS vs inside is fine malarkey, 600ft between you’s
It is crazy! I've hit a E190s wake before when they are descending ILS.
Is it possible to fly to France for lunch? www.theflyingvlog.uk/france-for-lunch/
Indeed it is. I did it while on a trip to the UK quite a few years ago. Flew out of Biggin Hill and I still have my Biggin Hill sweatshirt!
@@midlifeflyer It's a little more difficult today though. Less options due to customs PPN/PPR requirements.
@ is that because of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU? Or heavier security in general? We did it in 1997.
@@midlifeflyer It's because the French have cut border staff and also COVID cut airlines in France's regional airports, so it's cost prohibitive. We've always required the customs, they just aren't present like before.
@@TheFlyingVLOG LOL! When we went, the French agent just waved us through. My wife was disappointed he wouldn’t even stamp her passport. This is what I enjoy most about your videos, the differences with US aviation.
Great!! Dat was mooi!
Glad you enjoyed this one! More coming soon :)
Love this one Robbie, didn't even know this was possible.
It's very much possible! Glad you enjoyed it, will you pay a visit?
The Boys 😊
Indeed :)
great video - super insightful with all the camera angles and radio recorded also. The workload at the bigger airport looks awesome! Are you going to go the full way and do atpl/cpl?
Thanks for watching! Very appreciative with the comment and I hope one day to go for my ATPL/CPL yes. It was a great trip to Amsterdam.
Oooooh, girlfriend 🤣
Best ever.
Try putting a handkerchief over it first!
That's a good idea.
Nice video! Gave me some inspiration to do some DA40 flights in-sim
Thanks for watching! You should! It's a great airplane to fly :)
Man nicely done, can't wait to do this myself.
Thanks for watching. Please do it!
Do those life vests come with a strobe light? And if so mind sharing where you found them?
They don't, but for ones that good, you are looking at maybe £500 each?
Great video and nice handbrake turn off the runway!
Ha! Thanks for watching, but yeah that was a naughty sharp left :D
Did I miss your departure ifr clearance
It took place 25 mins before getting in the aircraft as per the documentation sent to me, so never included it.
Great video. I tried that kneeboard on a da42 and found it restricted the centre stick so sent it back
Thanks for watching! Oh no, was it the same one from Pooleys?
Nice job, well done both on the mission and the video. Had a look at your Vlog for an idea of costs, and bearing in mind how busy Schiphol is the fees are not the expected exercise in daylight robbery! As you say, try doing that at many other capital airports and the costs quickly become prohibitive. Impressed by how you operate, quite the two crew team you’ve got going on there. Do you fly commercially too? As an owner-operator also of a light single, my main concern flying IFR around Europe in winter is icing. That said you seemed to have successfully avoided the white stuff. Happy landings 😊
Hi, Thanks for watching - it's much appreciated. Yes, it's the only airport in the world of this size and for a capital city that you can walk away with some change. Most people that fly with me have some understanding of aviation, it's very rare that I've ever got anyone that's not aviation related in a light aircraft but I have done so a few times. I sadly don't fly commercially, yet but it's something I've always dreamed off. What aircraft do you fly? Icing for me is a concern all year around and most times I've had it, have been the very warm summer months.
@@TheFlyingVLOG I am currently owned by a Piper PA-24 Comanche, fairly elderly approaching her sixth decade, but still getting it done IFR around Europe. 😊
Very nice! Where are you based? How long you been flying for?
@@TheFlyingVLOG nominally Turweston, though occasionally found in SW France. Comanche has been with us for three years, though I’ve been licenced to cause aerial havoc for somewhat longer…..
