Making Hand Hammered Hi-hats on a 26 Dollar Budget
Alright here we go! Another chapter in cymbal mod D.I.Y. This time around, we are again using these no name cymbals that can be found on Temu, Amazon and Ebay. And hand hammering them in the hopes of making a more complex sounding set of Hi-Hats at a very low price. This project was quite the adventure and I hope you all enjoy!

Hand Hammering a Cheap Sabian Ride Cymbal
Переглядів 62 тис.2 місяці тому
In todays video, we ditch temu and amazon, and start off our experiment with something higher quality. A used Sabian B8 20 inch ride cymbal. Applying all of the right tools this time. I demonstrate the whole process of attempting to transform this cymbal into something more similar to a Zildjian K, or Sabian's AAX series. If you are a new drummer, with a tight budget, this is the video for you!...
Hand Hammering a 13 Dollar Cymbal
Переглядів 27 тис.5 місяців тому
In this video, I take a couple of cheap, "no name" brass cymbals that can be found widely on Ebay, Amazon, Temu etc. And using a ball hammer, see if I can transform them into something more interesting, and pleasant to the ears. The mods led to some pretty cool results! It may not be a Zildjian K or a Sabian AAX but for a total of around $55 dollars, it was a fun project that was well worth whi...
Making Your Cheap Cymbals Sound Better - DIY Hand Hammering
Переглядів 27 тис.7 місяців тому
In this video, I show the process I went through experimenting with hand hammering some cheap brass cymbals that came with my Pearl Roadshow drum set, in hope of making them sound more jazzy and complex, like a Zildjian K or Meinl Byzance. Initially I was not expecting much, but the results were actually pretty cool! If you enjoyed this video, feel free to support me on Patreon: www.patreon.com...

Wooooow the fully lathed ones sound like a trash stack or a clap stack fir a fraction if the price
Hello, im going to do this with my sabian b8 ride aswell, ive never modded a cymbal before, is there anything i should know before continuing?
Sure! I would definitely suggest starting out hitting lightly with the ball hammer, to get an idea of how much force you need to use, and work your way up slowly. Obviously different ball hammers have different weights to them. So its better to under do initially, than over do, in terms of strike force. It seems to me from the few I've hammered. That deeper dents make for a trashy, aggressive sound, and shallower dents create a more subtle effect, that preserves some of the original tone, while washing out the piercing high pitch overtones. So it all depends on your goal for the end result. Also, I would recommend hammering the cymbal in small amounts evenly across the whole surface, let it rest for a day or 2, test the sound. And repeat this process until you have a tone you are comfortable with. Right after hammering, cymbals can sound very dead, and typically need those 1 to 2 days rest time to come back to life before each test. So patience is key 👍 Hope this helps! And genuinely hope you end up with an awesome result!
Cool project. Maybe you should try lathing the top cymbal head down to make it thinner. Awesome vid. Cheers
1:08 wow thats was nice. 1:41 👆🏻🙄
Amazing!
Wow! Great video
To be fair, vintage is 25 years
how are you hammering it without it cracking?
Great stuff here comrade, thank you for sharing and good luck in the future. Of your cymbal videos so far, I like the sound of this makeover the most.
Full hammered crash sound is so much better. Nice vid.
매우 흥미로운 결과 잘 봤습니다. 라이딩에서는 절반 해머링이, 크래싱과 라이드 둘다 에서는 전체 해머링 소리가 좋게 들리는군요.
What if you bought a larger cymbal and cut it down? That might give you a heavier bottom.
keep going these are awesome experiments
Thanks i hate it
No prob. Anything for you. 😂
heat treatment *after* hammering will make a bigger difference. have to heat it a lot more than that though, until it changes colour
Dang that sounds amazing. You should make a lathe and reduce weight to give it wash
I got inspired after your seeing videos and bought a set of brass 14'' hats and 16'' crash on a facebook marketplace for 60 EUR. I also found a round cast iron holder of some sort, which is became a perfect base for hammering! Then I just hammered these bad boys following your "instructions" from the previous videos. The crash turned out very nice, super trashy with fast attack. Love it! As for the hihats, i got basically the same result as shown in this video, but they got a bit too trashy for my taste. Definitely not all-rounders, but pretty good for FX stack I guess. When I will find the next cheap cymbals I want to try to flatten out the bell and see what happens) Thanks for the inspiration! Cheers!
Thats great! Thanks so much for sharing your results! Really glad the videos are inspiring you. For sure though, I think the smaller brass cymbals become trashier more quickly. I want to try making the hammering a little less dense and deep next time. I might try making a set of 18 inch hi-hats out of 2 B8 Bronze crash ride cymbals. I feel the the brass cymbals often sound much smaller than bronze cymbals of the same size, probably due to the fact that the metal is less dense. Excited to hear the results of flattening out the bell, that sounds like a fun idea! Thanks so much for watching, and cheers to you too! 🍻
you did miracles
Awesome video you should try making china cymbals that would be a fun one to watch. Great content keep it up!
crazy how those cheap cymbals can turn into something that complex sounding
Made a big difference totally worth it
Kinda sounds like the zildjian k custom special dry (first gen) and that’s the sound I want🥶
I have an acoustic kit I don't really play that often anymore. I spend most of my time on my ekit. The acoustic set has a set of Meinl hcs's. I'm thinking about trying this.
love the incremental comparisons!
Very cool, personally I like the half-hammered sound the most, cool to see this!
Not sure why....when you showed the side shot of the fully hammered top and bottom, when the hats open and close the cymbals they remind me of the Muppets around the telephone going yuuup yup yuuup😅
LOL, this is on point. 😂
I liked the fully hammer top and unhammered bottom the best
I agree
the hammered version sounds great man!
sounds like a million bucks! 🔥
Epicsauce snare tone
As a planet z haver, thank god, she needs some tlc
really enjoying the melodious tinkle sound from these cymbals
I’ve also got a melodious tinkle cymbal from temu 🤣
I like the concept but i think you edited this one a little too much, didn't really have time to take in the sounds and compare them to each other with 2/3 hits on each variant. I do like the idea tho and i have a set of brass paiste hats so i might try this myself.
I’ll take note of that for the next one. Don’t want things to be too rushed. Appreciate the feedback. And Thanks for watching!
you can put a little fold on an edge if you want a muting tone and a little bit more sizzle. or get a welding rod and fire it on that cymbals to add more muting, it wont wore off easily just sand it properly
what snare are u using?? ive been searching for that sound for months!!
To be honest, it’s just the standard, poplar wood snare that comes with the Pearl Roadshow drum set. (Pearl’s cheapest line) I’m using the stock heads, tuned really high on both the top and bottom heads. Makes the rimshots very resonant, and the snares highly responsive.
Remember when shorter UA-cam videos were the norm? And then they added the mechanic to get you more ad revenue when you exceed 10 minutes. From there we got bloated content most of the time. Thanks for not being one of them.
I'm really surprised at how different it sounds.
You are one of the only people that keeps their comparison clips short enough and close enough together that you can actually A/B the sounds effectively. Some people play these long sections and by the time the second one finishes I can't remember what the first even sounded like.
Still sounds like dog shit. It really needs some thickness lathed off.
I wonder how this would work on meinl hcs cymbals. They also have that super harsh high-end at times like that sabian
Honestly I’ll probably try it soon! I’m especially curious about the 22 inch. HCS Ride. It’s one of the few beginner cymbals out there that is over 20 inches.
@SynthRay if it's not too much to ask, i would love to see the result! I subscribed! Also, you do some sick drumming, i forgot to mention in my first comment!
Certainly! And thanks so much for subscribing! Got a video featuring a Brass Zildjian Planet Z ride coming soon. But I'll add Meinl to the list as well. 👍
Dude I really like your videos; I'm shocked to see you have less than 10K subs. Editing, narrative, captions, and quality of content is all on-point. Keep going, man!
Thank you so much! That truly means a lot, and is very encouraging. I've got 2 more videos on the way, and I'm excited to share them. So glad you like what I'm making!
Great video 👍 the audio recording 👌 your snare is ridiculous, but impressive work on the cymbal, you have inspired me to hammer away thanks man!
I feel like now you have a gong unless you hit the bell, then it sounds like a ride again. The original sounded actually really nice Makes me confident to buy a cheap ride! Just got the $200 SJC galaxy pathfinder Floor Tom! I love that series, but I wanted a nice ping so I got the Mapex Side Snare and just a cheap Wuhan hat. But don’t knock Wuhan they got the right tone!
Good job! 👍
Off topic, but your snare sounds great!
you can't polish that turd
Bro, this is awesome. Great job by the way. Have you ever thought on doing a video hammering a cymbal but from the inside to the outside and see the difference gradually?
Thanks so much! And you know, I haven't tried that specifically yet, but i'm down to give it a go. The closest i've come to that is in my first video, where I just hammered a 2 inch ring around the bell on my Pearl 16" Crash Cymbal.
