    I think the way one processes information will chamge how peope see the game. One type of person is one that recognizes nuances, is capable of data gathering through observation and synthesizing that data into some form of action plan. This game values that greatly. The other type doesn't even recognize those things. I have seen this come out through some reviewers who make statements of the game systems being simplistic and shallow. To me, that betrays their complete and utter lack of recognition of nuance and deeper connections of those systems. For example, one reviewer's town was so horribly laid out in simple blocks that completely disrupted the flow of its people and from that I wondered if he just didn't recognize the very core of this game's depth: the citizens. As I watched him crap on the game (and attract like-minded people in his comment sections, which became a witch-burning orgie), i came to realize he was playing it purely based on each individual system or supply chain. That's what he saw as the complete experience. So he saw bread making as: farm wheat -> farmhouse to make grain -> windmill to make flour -> oven to make bread. Ok, sure, that is technically correct. But what he didnt even seem to process is how every single citizen is connected to the system, the entirety of the whole community. He called it a bug or bad AI when his citizens would simply not work in what he assigned them to, such as building a certain buiding that he set to highest priority. But he missed that he had 8 trillion buildings set to be built, but a total of two oxes. He couldn't seem to track the bottle neck (in this case too few oxen) and if he did see that he didn't understand that until the oxen are able to bring the timber the citizens can't work on that building project. And since they had no other assignment they just sat around. I could give many other simple examples, such as how the design if his town made his people have to walk miles to complete small tasks). Basically, he put no value on observing his people and seeing the flow of their day. That is truly the life blood if this game. I know, I have played nearly 100 hours and at least 20 or more of those have been watching individual citizens' work flow to help me understand their needs. No wonder he crapped on it. He simply didn't understand it and tried to play it like other city builders. It is very different than most other city builders. The daily life of your citizens matters. A lot. Every decision feeds into how efficient they are. Add more challenge by valuing a period based aesthetic. A modern engineering based design may work well to give maximum flow to your people, but the game actively discourages that, as evidenfed by the road system, for example, which fights hard against perfect squares. You can do it, but it feels like you are forcing it. Anyway, thanks for the review!

    This was really useful, and a fun watch as well. I saw the game on GOG and was intrigued, but a bunch of the early reviews turned me off. After this video, I'm definitely interested again, though with lowered expectations due to the issues you outlined. I have a lot of fun analyzing and comparing anxient and modern ethical systems, so this seems a lot more interesting than the old bioware style binary karma systems

      @FreybeardPC 29 днів тому

      Hey! I think having low expectations will be fine going in. Doubly so if you can get it on sale. It has its problems and quirks but i think its maybe been critically panned a little more than it deserves - likely due to pre release hype. The moral compass was a pretty interesting mechanic so it would be cool to see what you think of it. It felt like it had less of an effect on the world than i would have liked, but i definitely liked it more than just a good v evil choice.

    I played this about 2 years ago, i mined for 2h. And when i wanted to return and get the heck outta there a 1 or 2 min countdown started (cant remember the time). I followed the robot back to the ship/capsule but i lost it somwhere on the way. I couldnt find the way back and the countdown finished and i didnt get a thing from all the mining. I quited the game that day. I really liked the game but i hate when you lose zhit like that, timers are stressful and not fun. Is the timer and that mechanic still in the game? And got any tip so that doesnt happened again. Like i said i like the game but that kinda "lose progression" thing is awful.

    • @FreybeardPC
      @FreybeardPC Місяць тому

      Yeah the timed return to the droppod mechanic is still present. Not sure if it wouldve changed since youve played, but a while back they introduced green flags that the mule drops to indicate the direction and pathway it takes back to the droppid to make it easier to follow. They improved it by adding arrows a while backto indicate which way to go, so that made it a little easier. Sometimes the caves can be difficult for the dwarves to navigate but easy for the mule, eg a vertical tunnel that mule can just ascend on the walls but the dwarves have to make their own path via driller, gunner or engi traversal skills. Re tips: If you play multiplayer, and even if only one of your party makes it to the droppod out of the four, its still counted as a win... i know "no dwarf left behind!!" But if youre struggling, this is the way to keep your precious minerals from the mission. Things are easier if you voice chat with friends and stick close to a driller at the end sequence - they can just drill direct to the droppod and not worry about following mule. Also, maybe dont stress about mining everything for the first mission or two. Just get the rhythm of events down.. do mission objective, maybe secondary objective if its not out of your way, and then extract. Once youre comfortable with that, start hanging back a bit longer and mining. So yeah: - try coop - do some quick in and out runs - not sure what class you were playing, but maybe try scout for quick easy traversal. Does that help? Anyone else got tips?

    Synthetic Man said it best, this game dwells too much on the core concepts the original but without ascending them to new heights. In fact DD1: DA is still the better experience because despite it's flaws & smaller, more lazy world at least the gameplay is 2 weapons per class (most classes except warrior & wizard) & this made the core gameplay more fun, you had 6 skills not just 4.

  • @FreybeardPC
    @FreybeardPC Місяць тому

    Hi everyone! Sorry for the long post... I thought, since there were some very passionate players in the comments, I should give DD2 another go as my playtime and footage was now about a week old. Just as closure before I move onto another title. As mentioned in the comments elsewhere there have been patches since my played version of the game such that there is now a "New Game" button!!! Which is excellent. My opinion on some things like combat mechanics, and enemy AI has softened a little - to be clear - I think better of them now than I did at the time of making the video. I find the combat with the regular sized enemies still a little too easy, but it's too frequent for me personally that i find it a hindrance in exploration. I think fighting the larger enemies is still kind of awesome as I said in the video, and I had a particularly fun battle with a golem and a griffin at the same time which was kind of sick. I don't like the fast travel system (the ferrystones or the oxcarts) as it stands in the game, and would still prefer an interconnected system of portals ala Witcher 3, but it's hard to blame the game for a design choice that is intended and is more something that I, personally, do not like. I still think it's a bit weird that Itsuno san was declaring that fast travel is admitting your game world is boring, but then still has the ferrystones system in the game as I say in the video... but whatever. The performance is still awful for me even as of this post. I had a session this afternoon for a couple of hours and crashed. Also pop in is still a problem and variable frame rate causing stutter too. DD2 still only works on 50% of my PCs (I only have 2). I started a new game and played through the castle stealth quests again and ... it's probably, for me, the weakest part of the storyline quests in terms of design etc - although that cutscene of the pawn at the castle with Brand... you know the one... yep that's pretty bad too. So yeah, I still don't like the storyline quests. There is also, for me at least, a lot of what I would describe as "world" or "character" jank...? For example I was fighting on an elevated road and missed an attack, and fell off the side down a slope towards the briney river. There was a little bit of land jutting out that caught me halfway down. "No problem" I thought, I'll just jump up (it looked jumpable) - it was out of reach. "Ok - I'll just dive into the red river and suicide so i can load back on the road" cut to me dying and loading back at my same ledge. I was trapped. Could have reloaded my save, but I would have lost maybe 2 -3 hours of world exploring gameplay. So I had to use a ferrystone to get me out of it. Not great. I never finished DDDA, and I wonder if maybe I came to DD2 with rose tinted glasses expecting less jank ~ 10 years later- so perhaps I was expecting far too much of DD2 in retrospect. I think it comes down to expectations and how much jank you're willing to accept for the combat which a lot of people love. If you loved DDDA then there's a fair chance this is your bag baby. I bounced off DDDA, and have done the same with DD2 and had different expectations to what was delivered. The jank, the performance dips, crashes etc is too much for me to personally recommend it at full price. If you like what you see, there's no harm in waiting for a sale to see if performance picks up with incoming patches. That's it folks.

    Funny how almost every game these days have micro transactions, but people only lose their minds over some games and not others having it. Micro transactions are all bad, there is no such thing as acceptable micro transactions. It’s a cash grab strategy that’s killing games, prove me wrong. Now on to my opinion on Dragons Dogma 2, it’s super fun to play, I don’t buy any micros and my only issue with the game is optimisation. I get minimal 70 fps, but average 100fps. I paid a ton of money for a monster pc, so if it stutters on my pc then the majority of gamers are gonna have it worse.

    Enemies most definitely ambush you. Goblins jump out of tall grass patches and gank you, saurians jump down from walls and ceilings to ambush you. Griffings swoop in during combat to ambush you. Ogres and trolls rush up towards you to ambush you. Enemies (especially goblins) can be observed having AI patterns as well, they will camp at night, sit around a fire, mumble some stuff to each other. Wolves hunt in packs Arisen. Plenty of enemies will fight each other when they run into one another. etc. etc. etc. sounds like you simply didn't pay attention to anything going on around you. This entire review is just: I do not understand the game mechanics and therefore its bad.

    For the most part, I can agree with the issues you bring up but I am still having quite a lot of fun with the game. I am currently over 100 hours and just finished the main story for the first time and am in the end game area. EDIT: This post ended up WAY longer than I expected lol I really struggled at the beginning because I was trying to play it like I have every other open world RPG for over the past decade. Once I embraced true exploration of every nook and cranny I found it a lot more enjoyable but I have always liked putting exploration before story. Interesting caves, unexpected and/or unique bosses, unique loot and eventually getting the ability to sense seeker stones has my inner loot goblin foaming at the mouth. Using Ox carts also saved the game for me in terms of getting from point A to B but, mid to late game, you will have more than enough money to buy ferrystones from shops whenever you want. It was an issue in the first game with scripted monster spawn locations during world travel and I was hoping they would get anyway from that. I was disappointed that they had not improved on that, even the flying boss monsters give the impression they are free-ranging but they follow the same path, land in the same spots, attack the same mobs. Cool seeing the same griffin take out the same ox maybe two or three times. I was also disappointed when two boss fights I was expecting to be really cool (considering the first one I challenged was REALLY cool design I never saw before) ended up being exactly the same. In general, I would have preferred more variety in bosses and mobs rather than reskins but most games suffer from that kind of game design, which is unfortunate. I do hope they expand on the armor/weapon system or bring out a lot more variety. Compared to the first game, it is lack luster. Character creation is great but it doesn't really matter when everyone in a similar level range is wearing the same stuff. Pawns were far more unique and interesting visually before. Only one set of end game armor/weapons for each class is stupid. Especially when some of those armors are tailored to female characters. I mean, it was funny for awhile to have my male mage running around in a corset and tights but now I have him in under-leveled armor because I like it visually. Even if we had a means transform a lesser items appearance to a stronger item would be great. As for technical side, I play on console so it wasn't terrible. It is noticeable in the bigger cities that frames were down but the worst of it was just after one of the final story missions. It was the only point I found it unacceptable as I am rarely in cities other than to dump inventory. There were no noticeable bugs and the AI is better than before, but not by a lot. Pawn ARE way too chatty with how little dialogue they have. I usually have to turn off quests while exploring because they keep trying to lead or say I have the item required in storage. I would play money for a quiet inclination because, sometimes, they do have interesting or useful things to say but if I hear about that ladder in Vernworth one more time. As for the microtransactions, I don't get the issue people have with it. Aside from two (the OST and Heartfelt pendant) are unobtainable or necessary. You can find or buy ferrystones, even are monster drops post game. Wake stones ARE limited but unless you are really struggling with combat you will rarely need them. I am not even speaking in a get-good kind of way. You can lose all your health and you won't 'die' until you hit the ground. You just have to take a health potion and you will be fine. Only time I have needed a wake stone is to revive a quest NPC or I fell (or got harpied) off a cliff. The only time I think it would be an issue would be after a certain event in the game but the 5 wake stones you can buy won't make any difference. Essential NPC's will respawn eventually anyway. Rift Crystals are easy enough to earn over time and similar level pawns are literally everywhere so you can change up free or cheapy pretty much anywhere. Not even sure why someone would want to hire an expensive pawn when it is more beneficial to change up frequently for quest rewards. Camping gear is everywhere, I have only broken one early on and I camp almost constantly. The character change book is now x99 and cheap. I could keep going on but the only thing I bought was the original games soundtrack, simply because it was fire. I honestly think they are only there to shut up whoever said there was no choice on the matter. Lastly, story. I wasn't expecting anything new or interesting story-wise. The Dragons Dogma lore is literally about an infinite loop but it still ended up being less interesting than the first game and even the OG was pretty dull until the last few missions. Even 98% of the cinematics were more uninspired and boring compared to the first. Grigori falling out of a hole in the sky, eating monsters out of the air and the general powerful and ominous vibe when you stab a sword into his foot. Compared to dragon breath fire, guy slaps dragon foot and dragon is all, ' guess that'll do'. Can't imagine how disappointed I would have been if I had rushed the main story myself. Overall, is it great, 10/10, game of the year, as some people say? No. Not at all. Is it fun, and did I get my money's worth so far? Yes. I can easily see it not being for everyone but that is what makes it fun to me. Too many larger studio RPG's take the mainstream, safe route and don't/won't take risks or approach a niche market. I miss these games that try something different. Like The Last Guardian, Jade Empire, Gun. None of them are perfect, but they are worth it.

      I think its been review bombed unfairly in a lot of places for the wrong reasons. Mostly for the existence of microtransactions by people that havent played the game. Youre right that the MTX arent necessary and thats why i left it to last in the video and mention that its been poorly understood by a lot of potential players. It doesnt excuse their existence in a fully priced game like this, in my personal opinion. People keep commenting that all the items are in game and i need to just not buy the MTX. I never did buy any MTX, and mentioned that its all available in game. I think the main crux i wanted to lean into was that i didnt like it for thr crashing and poor performance i experienced on PC. I also did not enjoy the combat - thats HIGHLY subjective i know as it seems to be most players best feature, and thats totally fine. And finally the story, quests and exploration werent enjoyable for me. MTX was NOT the main reason for me disliking the title. Left it in my "cons" because, while unnecessary, its something that a lot of people will not want to support as a concept.

    I absolutely hated the health system with losing your max health. Happens far too fast in my opinion The thing I hate the most in the game is the weight system. Now maybe my character is bugged in some way I dunno as I picked a mage as my class but she can't carry anything at all. Almost quite literally. The armor on her back and a camp supplies alone puts me into encumbrance where I can barely move. I can't carry potions, ingredients or anything at all or its in the red. I've gone through my entire playthrough looting absolutely nothing because my encumbrance level would flash red. Also as a mage whenever I'd take three steps and encounter more goblins, I'd simply just stand there because more often than not they'd be dead before my character would cast a spell. So my experience with the game was; Looting Nothing Standing around waiting for the pawns the destroy trash mobs over and over because it wasn't worth the 50 year cast time Max health being low all the time. (At one point it was so low that I had like 10% of my max HP because I can't be bothered to camp every 20 feet) Listening to my pawns tell me how crafting materials can be combined into many different things. Carrying guards around to throw at big monsters because free help. (Doesn't encumber you but an apple will)

(he slices and chases the enemie. you dont have to look on) the mystic spearhand on the other hand is bugged for me till now. xD i dont know why but if you play in full hd it looks like ps2 trash but in 2560x1440 it looks beautiful. frame drops are very often and it nearly burnt my cpu. (it was like 100 degrees celsius) if you had a teleport system or a animal you could ride in the game it would be over real fast sadly. the end feeels rushed and most of the map is empty. the game was pretty fun for me and [spoiler] there is a class where you can combine every class into one. this class can wear anything and use anyting at any time. its hilarious and pretty endgame.

    I see you are getting a lot of flack for your review. You hurt a lot of fanboy feelings. I think for the most part, you are spot on. I was intrigued originally when I saw this game. I have since seen a plethora of video reviews and I am flabbergasted at the amount of positive comments as I watch what I can only guess are bloopers because what I have actually seen of the game, does not exactly line up with what these reviewers are saying. The biggest issue is the lack of fast travel (a proper, easily accessible one). Nothing worse then having to waste 15-20 min (or more) literally going back and forth and fighting the same mob groups every damn time. I know based on some of the comments that some of the issues you mentioned have been fixed like the new game or do over, but the lock on explanation from one person isn't a lock on if it breaks easily or you can't easily tell which enemy you are currently locked on too in a mob. I will eventually buy the game but not until it goes on sale. Unless the devs fix the majority of these issues, sales will be coming soon. It has potential for sure and I like some of the new mechanics I have seen. The animation though looks fugly sometimes especially when jumping down. Why does the character always look like it's going to face plant???

      Haha. Well i guess its just a case of "different strokes for different folks" eh? I think it all comes down to the combat. If you like it, the exploration is that much better... the lack of fast travel (not including oxcarts oe ferrystones because you cant use them to fast travel wherever you want) is less of a problem too... But yeah, combat not fun for me. Easy. Less challenge. Not engaging. As a result.. exploration suffered... lack of travel suffered. Poisoned the whole experience... Then the jail thing and laugably absent stealth mechanics.... all kind of added up to a "not recommend" But then, im one of those guys that enjoyed Gothan Knights game story etc despite godawful motorbike travel and some very poor design choices. DC Fanboy, so i guess i cant control my enjoyment of that franchise.... ;-)

    While you make some good points it also sounds like you havent actually played the game fully paying attention or just spreading misinformation. There are goblins that actually ambush you. Cant remember the name but the green ones, they hide in the ground and jump out at you. You DO NOT need to buy more camping kit from MTX shop… the camping kits last forever unless destroyed by enemies while you camp. I got about 15 spare kits in my storage from just playing the game. You can also buy them from vendors in game. You do not need to cook any food while camping, that just gives you a few temporary buffs. You cannot buy ferrystones in the cash shop either. You can however buy the ferrystones from vendors. They restock after 4 in-game days. The visuals are OK. Theyre not terrible. Having said all that, yes the game has issues and shortfalls but overall its a great fun game. I dont think it will have much replay-ability once im done with it and the combat gets too easy. Which means inconvenient for when you need them in the world. The cooking thing - i could only ever cook one steak per night.... not correct? Little odd. Was hoping to keep some cooked in my invent. Dont think i had anything about buying ferrystones in the cash shop. You can still buy a port crystal though correct? Agree with combat. The comment surrounding microtransactions in Helldivers 2 being acceptable because you can get the in-game currency to use being acceptable, but not in DD2 is kinda hypercritical when all items you get in the game if you just play the game...just don't buy them...they aren't pivotal to the experience. It just seems you had a bee in your bonnet about this game from the get-go. There is fast travel through Ox carts which doesn't even get a mention. I'm playing it on PS5 and I think the graphics are awesome, just because the colour palettes are realistic and not popping bright colours is not bad graphics. MTX is a general game industry issue yep. I dont think its an issue in DD2 tho. I was saying its gotten a bad wrap because it wasnt covered in pre reviews so kind of a shock to community and gave the game a bad look. While i didnt get a lot of wakestones, thats mostly because i spent 20 hours before calling it quits. MTX is the least of my concerns with DD2. 100% not required to play the game. I think theres a lot of misinformation and i dont want to add to that, so apologies if i wasnt clear there. Definitely not jumping on bandwagon... honest genuine thoughts. Im not a full time youtuber or being paid by anyone - games or anti-games. Not my thing. Youre spot on with the ox carts though. I forgot to mention them at all. I did use them. It does chew into your game time and can affect time sensitive quests that way though. Cant comment on ps5 as ive said elsewhere... dont have one. Glad youre enjoying it though. So yeah, apologies if i made it sound like MTX was my bug bear with this game being "bad". Totally not what my view is. Put it in the "cons" at the end as a general, not specific criticism. I don't think this review is a good representation of the game, from your personal experience you was doing a lot of things wrong, like not knowing there was a lock on or that fast travel IS a thing and by the end game you can also pretty much use ferrystones as much as you like. Completely fair you didn't enjoy the game, like the first dogma, this is not everyone's cup of tea it does not play like the conventional open world RPG which is why you put things like not allocating stats or quest markers as a negative because you need them things. However, that does not make this a bad game, what you also said about combat is just a hot take, the combat is incredible, you said the spearhand is not agile which shows you probs have not understood how you should be playing the spearhand and likely that means not understood the other vocations or the combat. Still thanks for posting your two cents was enjoyable to hear other peoples experience.

      Think i couldve been clearer. I DID know there was the fast travel system with the ferrystones, and i did use it. The thing i didnt mention was the oxcarts so definitely shouldve popped that in there. Used those too. What i meant by lack of teleport was a system like.... witcher 3 signposts. ..Where there are fixed jump points of travel. Hope that makes more sense of where im coming from. Thats good that ferrystones are more available later on. Ive played for a bit over 20hours so definitely not endgame, so fair criticism there. I couldnt keep going with the way i was feeling with it. The spear class - there was an agility teleport power that youre probably aluding to. I did try it, but either i was too uncoordinated to get it to pop or i had some issues with my keyboard maybe that it wasnt working so i just dropped it off my available powers. I actually was trying to say i LIKE the absence of quest markers and such - when i say it doesnt hold your hand... that was a good point for me! Thank you for taking the time with solid feedback and response! At the end of the day, its all subjective, and im in the minority of not liking the game - not alone tho, and when i review it as a thumbs down, its more that i personally didnt get more than half the retail prices worth out of my experience. And my opinion hasnt changed on that front. But yeah, im just one voice. I would say dont listen to just my opinion on anything, always check with multiple sources to get closer to the truth of an experience im just one aussie mook with a mic and too much time on my hands. Just a little thing with the spearhand you can charge its teleportation ability while doing weapon skills, so you can do the charge spear move then tap the teleportation to zip somewhere else, attack and while attacking you can also charge so mid attack you can zip somewhere else. As long as you are charging its bolt which i think is the point, you can dart around like an absolute mad man! a lot of fun, the only class I didn't enjoy was thief, way too powerful.
