Old Man, New Turntable
United States
Приєднався 27 лип 2022
Old man Gen-Xer just starting to learn and play around with turntablism as a hobby. Having fun with portable and full-size turntables.
Practice: 2 Tip 2 Click Flare Scratch Combination
Practicing the 2-tip 2-click flare combination shown b D-Styles in the tutorial snippet: ua-cam.com/video/0HBJuYt2Eys/v-deo.html. Trying to improve on getting the tips a more staccato, and stopping missing the first click of the flare.

Practice: Relearning the BoomFlare

After watching more videos, it looks like while the BoomFlare rhythm I was using was not quite right. Slowing the tempo down and tweaking the patten a little bit mentally so that it hopefully sound better at a faster tempo.

Testing: Trying Out DVS Scratching with Serato DJ Pro and Numark Scratch
Переглядів 4602 місяці тому
Turns out an old laptop I bought years ago barely meets the minimum requirements for Serato DJ Pro, so I thought I'd give DVS scratching a try. Works well. Just playing around with scratches here, trying to see how well the tech holds up. Apologies for the sound issues... this mixer is much louder than the old Rane.
Testing: Day One Trying Out the Numark Scratch Mixer

Found a Numark Scratch in excellent condition on a deep discount and decided to give it a try. Not really practicing anything here - just trying out the crossfader.
Practice: Drilling BoomFlares at a Faster Tempo

Mistakes Allowed! Trying to Work Two-Click Flares into a Flow

For this session I was just working on integrating two-click flares into a flow with the few scratches I already know without just repeating them. Still ended up repeating them, but that how practice goes sometimes.

Sick!🔥
You made that look easy!
Thanks! Happy all the practice is starting to pay off
Nice! I’m still practicing myself RESPECT! ✊🏾
Thanks! Just caught your mix -- miles ahead of me! 🔥🔥🔥
@@oldmannewturntable Thanks brother, appreciate you
What do you think, Rane TTM 57 or Numark Scratch?
My last mixer was a Rane TTM 56. Its solid and I still have it. It was great for scratching, but I wanted to learn to mix also. Since I dont have many records anymore, I wanted something with Serato. The Numark Scratch was the best budget option. The options and overall sound of the Scratch make it better in my opinion.
@@oldmannewturntable thx
Hi. You emit good sounds here. Tell me how this Numark works? Isn't this crossfader too small? Regards.
Thanks! Its a very good mixer; I'm enjoying it so far. The crossfader is good -- it doesnt feel any smaller than any other crossfader.
For some reason I found the boomerang so hard to master. Still not quite there yet. Keep it up 👍🏾
Yep, it will definitely require a lot more practice for me to get decent at it.
Ciao la traccia per lo scratch dove la posso trovare ???
Practice makes perfect!🔥💯🔥
Yep! Thanks Juse
Keep practicing 😊
Smooth! Keep going 🔥
Thanks, will do!
How old are you? I’m 62 doing the same
49. Hopefully I'll be able to continue into my sixties
@@oldmannewturntableI’m 50 and just got back into scratching after a 25 year break.
Nice! I'm enjoying it
Respect 👊
Dope clean cutz man! Keep it up!
Thanks! Will do!
How is the Scratch treating you?
I'm liking it so far, but the fader has more dead space than I'm used to and is very difficult to reconfigure. I'll probably take the Innofader Pro2 out of my Rane and try to drop it in the Scratch. If there are no issues, then I'm good to go.
ua-cam.com/video/xPZKxDTqVJE/v-deo.html this video is pretty good on explaining on how to adjust the cut in time.. the problem with the inno fader pro 2 is the size.. it can be tricky to get it in most mixers.. i hope this vid helps you in your journey with that mixer..
@@GraceByFaith-86 @GraceByFaith-86 Thanks for the link, but that was the exact video I used as a guide while trying to reconfigure. Nothing changed at all after about an hour of retries. You're right about the Pro2 being difficult to get into a mixer... getting it into the Rane 56 was an ordeal. Luckily Innofader has a mounting bracket that should help this time. Thanks for looking out though!
@@oldmannewturntable yes sir, I know I was sweating trying to figure it out for hours hahah.. I eventually gave up and emailed the man himself Elliot Marx the owner and he helped me out through email.. don't hesitate to email inno fader.. the owner will get back to you...
Love the post it notes! Nice work and new subscriber. 🔥
Are those Cempasúchil flowers behind?
Its actually an artificial bonsai tree w/ made with moss. I was looking for something like marigolds but couldnt find a good artificial option.
dope brotha! im just learning all this myself, not easy at all! dope cuts and damn you have a gorgeous set of tables!
Thanks! Yeah its a lot of practice and developing muscle memory, but I'm enjoying it
nice cuts man
Appreciate it!
Nice choice with the steady B

I'm having a blast... never too old to jump back in if you can
Oh look a legit dj without beat match and mp3's....cheers my man! Only the ol schools respect the wax.
Appreciate it... I love wax, but it can be hella expensive nowadays. I can understand why people go the mp3 route, especially with the dj tech being so good now. I'll be trying out some of it myself soon. Thanks for watching!

Dope stuff, stay on a grind🫡🫡
Thanks! Definitely will
Super awesome dude - would you ever show us your board of post-its and all the moves you've collected so far? I'd be really curious about how you interpret them as diagrams.
Thats skratch notation. The up/down wave lines represent forward/ backward movements of the hand on the turntable. The little hash marks are the fader cutting the sound in/out.
Good work! The see-saws are the cuts from :10-:30 secs? I like those. I'm curious what are you using to mark your records?
The see-saws are spinkled in here and there, but from 0:33 - 0:37 are see-saws. TTM has a great tutorial vid here: ua-cam.com/video/6ZHYnUdPw3g/v-deo.html. The labels are just standard Avery easy peels labels; they can be applied/removed easily.
Crispy Kutz!
salute... this how it happens!
Yep... thanks!

@@oldmannewturntable missed the word "learning" before stuff 😂
Just wanted to give you props for putting in the work and thank you for posting your practice. I recently started practicing to try and get better with cuts and your videos are a great inspiration (I've been a bedroom dj since the late 90's). I'm curious to know what the diagrams on the sticky notes represent? Also wondering if you have a special table for your setup? I have a folding 6-foot table that wobbles pretty bad when I scratch and am looking to get a new one.
Thanks! I feel like I learn almost as much from the other amateur DJs on YT as I do from some of the pro tutor videos on here, so I’m glad my struggle can also help motivate others. 😊 The table is a ZenSports 55-inch computer desk I bought off WalMart a few years ago. It still wobbles a little, but the weight of the turntables and flight cases mostly keep it in check. A workbench from HomeDepot or might be a better option for stability, but the best ones were definitely outside of my budget. The diagrams are Turntablist Transcription Method (TTM) for the scratches - like music notation but for turntablists. The diagonals are the up/downs of the record, and the dots or vertical lines are the fader closes. It helps me to have a visual of the stuff I’m practicing. For more info, check out TTM Academy… this is one of their tutorials on the Joe Cooley scratch w/ TTM: ua-cam.com/video/lV5SPCaAnMM/v-deo.html
@@oldmannewturntable Thanks for getting back to me! I looked up the TTM website and totally remember reading about this years ago. I'll do some more research on transcription and a new table. I remember seeing Gangstarr years ago and Premier put cinder blocks under the legs of his table. I think it had more to do with reducing the low-end hum that would sometimes come from vibrations through the stage than keeping the table steady. If you don't mind could you tell me what the rest of your setup is? Looks like Stanton turntables and the old Rane 56? Are you running Serato, or all vinyl?
@@E-Wix Yep, Stanton ST150 w/ Ortofon VNL needle on the left turntable and Ortofon OM Pro S on the right. You're right, the mixer is an old Rane 56 TTM that I added an Innofader to. I'm running all vinyl with new battle records as well as old-school stuff that I stumble across on discogs.com, but the plan is after I get more comfortable with the basics after about a year or so, I'll take a look at Serato.
@@oldmannewturntable Gotcha. I started on Technics that my friend owned but didn't have the $ to buy my own so I bought some Numark TT 200's about 20 years ago and am still using those. I'd like to get some new tables but everything is so expensive now (especially 1200's) and all geared towards Serato (I'm still all vinyl as well). I have an old Vestax 06 and put an innofader in it as well. Anyway, I'll leave you be, it's nice chatting with you. Look forward to following your progress.
Cool thanks for stopping by... I subscribed incase you post more videos and mixtapes

It reminds me of the scratch battle from the movie Juice with Tupac
Nice, look forward to new content ❤ Howdy from Scotland 🏴
Thanks! Got some good scratch records recently so there should be more coming👍
Very good, I've subscribed, when I was growing up my dad had decks set up, was very fun... Beat juggling I was best at
I've tried beat juggling a few times, and I'm horrible at it. I'll give it a try again later on... thanks for subscribing!
@@oldmannewturntable mix master mike was the bomb at it, I'm sure qbert did a couple when he was dressed as a ambulance driver or whatever.. I'll find and link them if you don't get the reference ♥️
Yep, I've seen those QBert videos before, but I don't remember him juggling in those. Rob Swift and the Beat Junkies do have good tutorial vids on it though. I'll find those before I try again.
Yooo, My teacher said not to take your hands off the vinyl during flare. Then flares on triple tempo are easier. Bleeeessss 🖖
Thanks for the tip! I doubt I'll ever get fast enough for triple tempo flares, but I'll start working on the hand placement and see how it feels
Came to say the same. “Glue your hand to the record”. Even if it’s a bit unnatural at first you will thank yourself in the long run. Sometimes drilling with the platter off is great hand control practice too. Been seeing you level up. Nice stuff man!
Thanks! Yeah I definitely co-sign the "platter off" drills... they helped me progress a lot when I first started, and I still warm up w/ some occasionally.
Sounding nice.. Dope using TTM Scratches cards
Thanks! Yeah I've found having that visual right there helps make my practice more purposeful
@@oldmannewturntable dope… I teach classes on scratching using TTM … keep training with it.. only 1%of Dj’s can read them.! Dope work
I never learned how to spin but I have a deep appreciation for the art. Used to listen to a ton of DJ Q Bert/Invisibl Skratch Picklz back in the day. Even saw Q Bert spin in a restaurant turned club after hours waaaay back in the day here on Oahu. Your vids take me back to those times, bro. Good stuff!
Thanks, I'm having fun doing these. For me, the Jazzy Jeff, DJ Scratch, solo songs were the best parts of the group albums they were on, and I used to have the XMen / X-Ecutioners stuff on heavy rotation for a while.
sounds fkn great...practiced for over an hour and i couldnt get the rhythm....kudos brother....big thumbs up!!!
Thanks! Autobahn is tough for me too because of that rhythm also, and the way it doesn't quite fit easily into a 4/4 beat
My favorite was always flares and transformers
My favorites were boomerangs and transformers, but I'm liking the short autobahn now also.
After Jazzy Jeff popularised it, every scratch is basically a transformer scratch.
❤❤
Thanks!
