FAILED But it was fun! Baritone Ukulele
Well that is four hours I'll never get back! Haha! Okay so let me start by saying I know failure and success is all relative to where you are in your musical journey. I am constantly trying to push myself and improve, a lot of the time it pays off, and sometimes it fails spectacularly!
It didn't start well, trying to find the right amp with an output jack, now it needs fresh batteries, multiple takes to get each instrument right (Yes my bass playing friends I am woefully out of practice and my technique.. well the less said about that the better!) Trying to juggle simultaneous record separate audio and visuals... Yep I sure know how to make it hard on myself, and all on a stinking hot day!
But... I did it. Regardless of the outcome I gave it my best shot, and I had a ball doing it. Sometimes you just have to go for it and take your chances. Anyway here is it for better or worse, I don't mind. Because most of all I had the best fun. :)

Riffing the Major 6th - 2 (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 662 години тому
Another Jazz Blues guitar exercise (adapted from 6 to 4 strings), based on adding the major 6th to the pentatonic scale. I've also included accompaniment to support the melody, which is more sparse than the previous one. The exercise was a little kinder to my left hand little finger, but took quite a while to get my head around. I am pleased with my process, six month ago I wouldn't have even a...

In this Jazz Blues guitar exercise (adapted from 6 to 4 strings), is based on adding the major 6th to the pentatonic scale. Another deceptive one that is a lot more challenging than it looks, with the little finger getting quite the work out! = = = Find me on social media; Instagram: fourinchcats Facebook: FourInchCats Bandcamp: fourinchcats.bandcamp.com/ Apple Music:...
Diminished Blues (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 1327 годин тому
Here is a Blues piece I put together this afternoon, inspired by a D diminished scale exercise and yesterday Jazz Comping video. I know a lot of the time scales are seen as boring and dry, something that must be endured (or preferably avoided if possible!) but if you dig a little deeper there are some really interesting melodic possibilities just waiting to be discovered! = = = Find me on socia...
All of Me: Jazz Comping (Baritone Ukulele)

"Comping (accompanying or complementing) is a jazz technique used to carry the chord changes, apply rhythmic style, and complement other musicians playing the melodically." - Josh Walsh In this video we look at a basic comping accompaniment to the Jazz Standard "All of Me", including the tabs and corresponding Chord diagrams. As a start, here I am using three note chords. = = = Find me on socia...
Bossa Nova Feel - Rhythm Exercise 1 (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 11312 годин тому
Taking a break from Bebop for the moment, I was recently talking about the Bossa Nova with a good friend. The Bossa Nova Rhythm can be quite tricky, and I spent a fun afternoon getting my head around it. Another deceptive one that is a lot harder than it first appears. But still lots of fun! = = = Find me on social media; Instagram: fourinchcats Facebook: FourInchCats...
Bebop Blues Arpeggio Etude (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 13714 годин тому
Following on from yesterday's Bebop Blues Scale exercise, here is a Bebop Blues Arpeggio Etude. After the scale (which I found most challenging) this looked deceptively easy. Ha! That illusion was quickly shattered! Both this and the previous exercise are played at half speed. I have a long way to go before I can even begin to think about the full tempo. Better to get it into my fingers at a sl...
Bebop Blues: Scale Etude in Bb7 (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 30116 годин тому
This is definitely not where I expected the music to lead me, but hey I’m along for the ride! My first foray into Bebop Blues with this scales etude in Bb7. Bebop has been described as "all about playing 8th notes over the chords" which is true, but also the timing of the notes, the emphasis on the 1st and third beat of the bar is so important. I'm still working on trying to pull it all togethe...
Noodling #43: Duck the Third - Slow Blues Intro (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 10719 годин тому
Personally I think this quirky slow Blues intro from guitarist David Hamburger also works as a great outro and with a little tweaking there is definitely a turnaround in there as well! Once you get a few of these three elements (intros/outros, turnarounds) into your fingers you'll be surprised how versatile they can be. If you aren't already following David Hamburger's @FretboardConfidential UA...

Noodling #41: 4 Bars 5 Chord Shapes (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 268День тому
In this exercise the melody is creating by playing a number of strings from within the 5 chord shapes shown. By changing which strings are played (in this case plucked) within a single chord you can add texture and make the exercise more interesting. In the next video I'll build on this one to create a short melodic etude. = = = Find me on social media; Instagram: fourinchcats Fac...

Repeating Bass Blues Exercise in D (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 146День тому
Another great Blues exercise focusing on a repeating bass line. I'm always looking for melodic exercises to hone my technique because I know the more melodic it is, the more likely I will practice it. A big part of working on your musical skills is to discover as early as you can your preferred learning style. Yes I understand the benefits of drilling straight scales etc, but for me realistical...
Noodling #38: Sliding Sweetness (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 164День тому
In this guitar exercise by Peppino D'Agostino adapted from six to four strings, I'm starting to experiment with slides in other melodies not just in the Blues. It's not easy to get both notes clear at this tempo, but personally I have always preferred a less frantic pace. There is nothing wrong with tweaking a tune or exercise to suit the instrument you're playing. I do try to keep it as close ...
Noodling #37: Basso Ostinato (Baritone Ukulele)
Переглядів 13814 днів тому
Another piece to practice moving up and down the neck. At this stage it’s getting easier to move to the upper frets without looking... as long as I don’t think about it, then I’m doomed! Eventually l would like be able to play these pieces without having to look at the fretboard... but I have a way to go yet! = = = Find me on social media; Instagram: fourinchcats Facebook: faceboo...

i play reentrant on my Baritone, love the deeper sound and i can play all the campanella tecniques as well,i don't see many Baritone players using high D's...of course the deep sound of a regular D is beautiful and warm too,but to me it makes it feel to guitar like...but then different again, difficult topic i guess :)

Thanks lovely 😊🌸
Is this meant to be played by ear or do you provide the notes. Either way, thank you.
You're very welcome. These videos are not designed to be tutorials but to both share the range of what is possible on the baritone ukulele and my musical journey. Playing by ear is a skill that I definitely encourage everyone to learn. I know it can be a bit frustrating to begin with but definitely with pursuing. :) To help get you started, this etude is in the key of Bb. ☺🌸
Very smooth love it xx
Thank you! 😊🌸
i hate the high d lol , thank you for that so the martins come with a low d ?
Yes, although it was a while ago so you might want to double check when you buy them. (I have since replaced my baritones with a Pono Steel Strung one). Hope this helps :)
i wonder did you move from guitar to baritone uke ? , people told me not too , but i put tenor steel strings on my flight nub 310 baritone ( i can see its braced exactly the same as my brothers acoustic ) i really don’t like the sound of it , but i suspect they would sound a lot better in my kala ka cm be but i dunno if im willing to try it on that one it’s braced exactky the same but they don’t have pin bridges , theres also the flight maia but i’m not sure i prefer steel anymore , volume i miss and using a plastic pick sometimes i miss but i feel now there a little bright for me , a tenor guitar is an idea but these tenor guitars and steel strung baritone ukes are so overpriced , what made you move to still ? you missed guitar but didn’t wanna go back to 6 strings ?
@@George-of5klShort answer, no. Whilst I did play folk guitar (chords/strumming) many many years ago, before moving on to other other instruments, it's not why I tool up Ukulele, and I don't miss playing six string guitar at all. :) Personally I would not string any of my instruments with steel strings that weren't specifically designed for them. Whilst they may appear to be constructed in the same way, the strain and pressure these instruments can withstand on a long term basis is very different, and can result in such damage as the bridge being ripped off the soundboard, or the neck warping. It happens once, you ever do it again. 🙂 I moved to steel strings because that is the sound I love the most and was looking for in my own music. As a fingerstyle player I don't use a pick at all although I know other ukulele fingerstyle players who do, and certainly it is part of the flat-picking style. Personally I don't feel that my Pono steel string Baritone or my Blueridge and Ibanez tenor guitars were overpriced (even with the poor Australian dollar exchange rate). They are exceptionally well crafted and beautiful instruments which give me the sound and intonation I want. Yes I do agree that not all steel string instruments are created equal and it's important to do your research and have a clear idea what you want from an instrument. I have played steel string instruments that I didn't consider were good value for me, but again other people love them. We are very lucky to have such a wide range of instruments out there. :)
where are ibanez tenor guitars ? could you please link me some i can’t find those onlu basses the only minus £200 tenor or steel string baritone uk i have seen is the harley benton something or other £166 and baritone uke only steel string is flight maia which is always out of stock and the pono i don’t think they make anymore i think you gotta buy that one second hand , so there are a very limited amount of these things compared to acoustics which is why the price is much higher in comparison most people play little ukes or acoustic guitars and that’s why you can get something so much cheaper there can i ask did a bridge fly off for you ? on my kala cm be i’ve had one steel string on there to compliment my other 3 classical strings for a while and that ukulele is x braced has a truss rodd and i really cant see that breaking off , the only downside is no pin bridge which could mean it couldn’t get out but wouldn’t the string just snap , i dunno i’ve never seen a bridge come off maybe in a very old worm guitar , it must happen as everyone says it , thanks for your reply’s appreciate it .
@@George-of5kl Websites like Sweetwater in the US carry Ibanez Tenors. Reverb.com, a second hand instrument market website is also a good place to start to gauge what instruments are available, I often use it when I am researching instruments. There are also excellent Facebook groups for baritone ukulele and tenor guitars with people very generous with their time and knowledge. I also have a general music group there called "Four Inch Cats Music Hangout" which you are welcome to join. 🙂
