Welcome to the wetter bass.
You will find in this channel video reviews of bass pedals and effects. My goal is to share with you, in a didactic and relaxed way, my thoughts and opinions about pedals and effects for electric bass guitars.
I have been playing bass for more than 30 years and have been making basses and guitars professionally for more than 12. Ironically, as a luthier I always though that craving for the cleanest signal was the ultimate quest for any bass player. Until a few years ago...
My assumptions changed completely once I realised that effects help me sound better, feel better and consequently play better! Now I'm completely hooked to pedals and found in UA-cam a way to share my enthusiasm with other bass players, wanting to convince them to go "wet".
Hence "the wetter bass".

My quick evaluation of the JZ:
+ THE GOOD
. 2 in 1 pedal (OD/Fuzz)
. 3rd place in the 48 overdrive shootout
(ua-cam.com/video/EFFn0TXxLKw/v-deo.htmlsi=7jAaIchqp6XDinSE)
. dry/wet blend with the option of brightening or darkening the dry tone
. OD sounds very amp like with a nice compression
- THE BAD
. shy on dynamics
. shame it doesn't have a slighter bigger size and two foot switches to toggle between OD and fuzz (Russian Big Muff clone BTW)

This is what the IBANEZ TS9B should have been like! The Maxon BD-10 Hybrid Bassdriver
This is absolutely the kind of video that needs headphones or really good monitors, and at this point if you're looking for input on bass amplification you should probably already be doing this anyway... but this is a really really really good video for explaining this seemingly-counterintuitive concept.
Such a great pedal.
It is! Lacks a tad of dynamism, but very reliable on the other hand.
I used to have the Way Huge Pork Loin, it was such a great bass overdrive but at maximum gain it could also be a really chilled out fuzz, which seems like an odd combination but it was just fat and smooth…it’s rare that you could find a bass fuzz that works well against acoustic guitars, but this but the Loin could do it
Oh I absolutely agree. I think most amp like ODs can do a great job at complementing the sound of acoustic guitars. Especially slightly more compressed ones like the Pork. 👋🏻
The hooker sounds great 👍 thanks !
will of you to play fire from Ipanema during the low gain part at 7:20 lol
4:27- I thought you’d never touch the gain control.
😅 yeah sorry about that! It’s more a set and forget control imho.
To my untrained ear, it was the jellyfish. Might of just been I liked your playing style more with that pedal. Well played by the way.
IMO the biggest sin of the OG Boss ODB-3 is that the gain starts at ZERO instead of at around noon like most pedals so if you have around 10-12 o'clock it sounds distorted instead of "overdriven", and Boss knows this is the case as it is indirectly stated in the manual as they have a sample setting called natural overdrive which is with gain at zero, a little bit of bass boost and a little bit of treble cut and that setting sounds really good, I would argue it is pre-amp like sound I accidentaly discovered this setting by watching a Rig Rundown of a brazilian bassist Canisso (RIP) in which he stated that he used the Boss ODB-3 as a pre-amp for years (since the 90s) and then he got a Sansamp and until his passing he still used the pedal but now as a booster instead of a pre-amp
Awesome. Thanks for sharing! I honestly think there are many options more versatile that can do much better job as a low gain drive. But what really matters here is one, do with what you have and two, any sound can be good as long as it matches the style you play.
This is a kind of out of control effect. Difficult to manage and get good sounds out of it. Boss also has the more modern BB-1x... a totally different thing and much more usable.
Yup, I agree, but still not my cup of tea though… 😅🍻
What is the name of the song u played at the last part?
Sounds and looks great!
Another great review WB! This mk2 version does sound a little better. (a little more musical). About a month ago I found a company you may dig "MOUNTAINKING". I think it's obvious from their name what player their trying to emulate. The pedal is called "behemoth". Let me know what you think.
Will check it out and get in contact. Thanks!!!
O compressor é bom? Substitui um Bass Compressor Fuhrmann?
I haven’t tried the Fuhrmann, looks pretty nice actually, so I can not compare. The compressor is a nice feature on the Sonicake, but keep in mind the BFactory is a preamp. This means that though good, it can not compete with a dedicated compressor pedal when it comes to settings.
@@thewetterbass muito obrigado
Great video and format! Some really nice sounds, too. Hats off :)
Sounds pretty good! It's the type of overdrive for playing Rush songs, that's the 1st thing that came to mind.
Interesting! Will listen to some Rush and pay more attention from now on. 👍
@@thewetterbass Yeah, Geddy Lee has a great tone, very distinctive. John Myung should've tried to emulate Lee's tone, because on many Dream Theater albums the bass sound gets lost in the mix.
@MrClassicmetal @MrClassicmetal mmm… yeah sometimes that happens. OD can definitely help find a better spot in the mix. When it comes to John Myung’s tone, my guess (and experience) is that it’s more a question of feeling the bass rather than listening to it, Also, in general, it depends on how you’re listening to music, how trained your ear is to listen to specific sounds, etc… and when it comes to bass players, it comes down to how you want to hear yourself. So my guess is that John perceives the attack of his playing (high mids and above) as a way to find his spot percussively and hear his playing in the sometimes massive soundstage of the band.
I don’t think you know what you’re talking about regarding the bad monkey
Hi! Please be more specific, cause it’s been a while and I said a lot of things! 😅
I have just purchased this pedal, for use on bass. Did you run the pedal at 9 or 12 volt when you recorded this video. Thank you in advance.
On 9V. How do you like it so far?
Best Intro ever🏜️👯♀️🤩🥰🎉🤘Love it!
Fender has a focused sound
Great review, and the new version sounds incredible. I agree with your comment that this pedal sounds more like a preamp. It doesn't seem to exhibit as much fuzzy distortion as a typical drive pedal. It imparts a flavour that I really like the sound of.... Like Bill Gould's bass tone on "The Real Thing" album.
Right, yes. I think it’s mostly due to the scooping of the sound in Ground mode/voicing. Very Gallien Krueger like… 😉
@thewetterbass Your new bass is rad too man.
Teria outra opção melhor que esse pedal da Boss pra fazer isso?

😄 I don’t know about that one! I will check it out.
Another great review! I've been eyeing the Mk. I for a long time now, and just as I'd convinced myself the my X7 blended with a RAT was all I needed... This shows up! Curse you! xD
😂😂😂 yeah… don’t kill the messenger! 🤓🍻
GnP crew! Love that bass, it sounds so great with the ground n pound.
Thank you. As soon as I can sit down and relax, I’ll check your review. As always looking forward to your knowing your opinion on the pedal! 🤘 And the bass… what can I say, I’m biased, it brings a smile to my face every time I play with it.
I saw the "wink wink" advert on this pedal, and saw it had a "ground" tone and a "pound tone, but didn't know what the different sounds are. Thanks for demonstrating this, it still sounds like a good Rat pedal, but the ground tone is scoop city, with a great thick bottom. this is "the sound" for this pedal. BTW, you've got me intrigued by the new bass pickup, a hybrid of P and music man, I can't wait for the review
Hello, the way you describe the mkII is spot on. And about the bass, well yes, looking forward myself to talk about the whys and hows.
Which is the best, mojomojo or bass soul food?
Hello! Best for what? As overdrives the soul food is a much lighter and transparent effect with a bit of a mid bump. The Mojomojo is a lot “fuller” sounding and has more body. It can get also more aggressive.
@thewetterbass I have the Soul Food. It has less low end.
I'm thinking about getting the mojomojo or ODR-mini.
The mojomojo is cheap and easy to sell if you don’t like it. Sounds great with bass!!!
😎👌🏻
My very first distortion/drive pedal!! Still have it! :)
Lucky man! Mine was the boss odb-3… stoped using effects until much later because of it! 😂 the EBS is perfect for neophytes and a no brainer for connoisseurs.
I've owned a few Multidrives over my time and moved them on, but I think I had the wrong expectations. I currently use a Multicomp, Billy Sheehan Deluxe Drive and Microbass II, so maybe I need to revisit a Multidrive to take the place of my Ibanez TS9B. How would you say the MD and TS9B compare? Is the MD a little clearer\less low mid?
@jcburn1973 I’d say it’s warmer in general, particularly in the tubes in setting. On flat it’s more even and half way on STD.
I wish it would have been. Until recently, it was the od I told new bass players to buy wether it ' s quite pricy. But you can't sound wrong with it. Now I've got some Blumes in my heart...
@arnoggeddon Blumes is more agressive, but fun, sounds fantastic and is well thought. It has way too much output volume though… I never dial the VOL control over 10:00!!! And that can be a real problem sometimes when you switch on the pedal without checking it first… 💀
Is the maxon BD-02 better than BD-10 ?
I prefer the DB-10 for it’s blend and eq (for drive only). Also the saturation sounds less “sizzly” compared to the DB-02. All in all the BD-10 is a more modern approach to the TS for bass sound.
Using DI-Out and Cab Sim in parallel creates a very great sound, the only challenge is that the Cab sim introduces latency, so the DI signal needs to be delayed. Would have been awesome if Ampeg had inckluded delay compensation.
Hi! To be honest, this detail escaped me completely, so nice that you mention it. At the time I did not feel there was a delay when playing with IR on (and I am quite sensible to that). Do you own this preamp and experienced yourself that delay with between the two signals as you mentioned?
I bought one of the pedals 2nd hand and it arrived with a fault. I still haven't taken it to anyone to see if they could fix it.
Where are you based and what’s wrong with it?
Get in touch with Flattley Pedals. They will provide a solution for you!
@flattleyguitarpedals4694 hey man - I'm in Australia. I did email you some time ago. You were super helpful, but getting it back to the UK and then getting it fixed at the time was a bit cost prohibitive for me (plus I think it might have been just into early COVID). The pedal works, produces sound eetc. With the blend fully CCW it does sound clean as it should, but as the blend it turned up it doesn't produce drive. It stays nearly clean until the blend is about 1 o'clock, but from there the volume disappears til 3 o'clock, then comes back super distorted. I had forgotten about it until this clip was posted.
Thanks 🙏
My pleasure!
Hi, what kind of oil did you use after sanding the neck? Does lemon oil work to seal maple?
Great question. No, lemon oil will not be enough. Try to find a natural oil for wood floors, they’re usually called “hard” oil and have minerals in them to make them dry faster and be a bit more resistant to abrasion.
@@thewetterbass Ok thanks! I think I have something else like you're talking about.
I actually really love using series parallel switching on double jazz humbuckers setup like a MM with a TBX tone pot. Pickups are cheap enough I'm not winding them anytime soon
Amazing video, I'm between buying the simplifier (which is actually a local brand for me lol) and dg microtubes infinity but the fx loops on the simplifier sells it to me. I have a question, why not use tour dirt on the preamp loop and your modulation/reverb/delay in the parallel and blend the two? In my band we usually don't play distortion heavy songs so wondering of this would suffice. Again, thanks for his video, amazing quality all around
Ok, maybe better the other way around?: preamp loop for delay, reverb and modulation and drive in parallel loop that you can blend in. The only “bad” thing in this case is that the LPF switch on the parallel loop doesn’t make any sense as you would be killing all the sturated mids and highs… but I think this would be the best option any way! But in your case I would plug a compressor instead of drive in the parallel loop (and the other FX in the preamp loop. Then the LPF would be awesome to add clean compressed lows (or full compressed signal if you don’t use LPF function) to blend in.
@@thewetterbass why would the preamp loop be preferred over the parallel? Also maybe it's a better option to run the od right before the simplifier input? Thinking of tuner -> envelope filter -> comp -> od -> simplifier input -> modulation and time fx in parallel loop -> di out If it helps I play mostly acid and folk rock with some funk to the side, though I play some soul and jazz from time to time, and would love to play ampless since my back tends to work up (I play a sort of heavy p bass)
@emithebee the parallel loop is great for blending in an effect like a drive or anything that makes the bass sound different from it core sound. The preamp loop is in series and comes after the preamp, so in general better for modulation and time based effects.
Originally, it was the JHS Low Drive, which ironically enough, bassists didn't buy much. Guitarists loved it, so it was rebranded as the Moonshine, and later updated with a clean blend to still appeal to the bass market. It's a great sounding overdrive!
It is!
That pedal sounds GREAT!!!
Ok ,I've just bought this pedal after watching this very good vid. On my pedalboard chain goes like this. Bass guitar - Drop pedal - Tuner- Bass Comp - Ampeg Pre Amp - Bass Driver - Flanger - Spark Booster - EQ - Amp. Question is, do I place the H24 before the Drop Pedal or after the EQ pedal? I've tried both, don't know if there is a difference? H24 is set at 40Hz. Either way my tone is way better with the H24 engaged. Also, should I ditch the EQ pedal?
Whats the point when theres so many bass specific options available?
Good question! The simple answer is: they all sound different. Some just a little but, some a lot. Also, they all “feel” different.
The moonshine is actually the 'low drive' which was designed for bassists but guitarists preferred it
ua-cam.com/video/3auzaj6MSEs/v-deo.htmlsi=hL932Da4UxeWHryy
Awesome :)
Really great pedal for bass. Excels at low gain stuff. First overdrive I ever bought. ❤
Yeah it’s a decent tube screamer with a blend.
The only problem is it changes the phase…. Otherwise I would definitely use it on one of my 2 boards where I split the signal in two parallel signals 😕
@@thewetterbassThat's a shame. I liked the tones I heard here, and I like the fact it has a blend.
@jcburn1973 oh, in series it sounds great on bass as you can hear in the video!
One of my favourite af all time! The only problem is that i need another one, or two
Or 3… 😂
I LOVE the keyboard sound at the beginning of your video! It perfectly complements the sound of the big muff. Can you tell me how you created it?
I got a pedal for you, "Mountainking Electronics". (BEHEMOUTH)
@@aldito7586 uuuh! Nice one!!!
I found one second hand, for €50. It'll be here tomorrow or the day after.
Let us know what you think about it!
@thewetterbass Will do.
Well. It came in the mail. It's in a good state, although the stompswitch needs a decent kick to activate the pedal, so, it's been fairly used. Sound wise, I like it. Into a Joyo California sound, as a dirty boost. Although I have to get used to "depth", it's not a common clean blend, but it does something to the overall sound.
Never knew that’s how they’re made and I’ve played guitar for 30 years
How do you decide how many winds?
7,000
I write down the number of turns and type of wire I use for every pickup I make and use this data for new projects. Usually my soapbar pickups have a resistance of around 8 to 12K Ohms. Depending on the size of the pickup you have to do more or less turns for the same resistance. But it can be anywhere from 4.000 to 10.000 turns or more!!!
