Wells Cathedral is in Wells, Somerset, England. The seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, it was built as a Roman Catholic cathedral from around 1175 to replace an earlier church on the site since 705. It became an Anglican cathedral when King Henry VIII split from Rome. Matthew and Steven stopped off at the cathedral on a rainy day in September on their way to the Historical Novel Society Conf...

Sorry I'm late to the party, fellas. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Christmas All Over Again" has to be my favorite rock-era Christmas song. It's happy but has a nostalgic, bittersweet vibe to it, especially when Petty's whinny voice sings, "Yeah, again," which I'm always compelled to imitate. Conversely, and please forgive me for the sacrilege, but I think Paul McCartney's and Ringo Starr's Christmas songs are the most phoned-in efforts ever. Paul's song manages to be both weird and lame at the same time. Ringo's, at least, has the "It's so bad it's good" thing going for it. Still, I listen to them both each year because I hate myself just enough, or maybe it's to keep Krampus away.
Great that you're going to write a book together 😀😀. Thanks for the song ideas. Hope you both have a great Christmas.
Thank you! You too!
Usually I watch one version of the Christmas Carol every year, and try to read to novel every second or third year. One movie which has nothing to do with christmas, but every year I watch the Magnificent Seven (the original from 1960). Also one song I really like is In Dulci Jubilo by Mike Oldfield.
Great traditions!
Just started Shadows of the Slain today. The team novella sounds class. You could do a normal robin hood setting, with Tuck, over drinks, telling a story of a warrior named Beobrand? Then we readers get two stories in one 😊
Not a bad idea. I'm not sure exactly how we'll do it, but I'm sure it'll kick arse! 😄
Marvellous roll on the 5th December!
Thanks for listening!
Pre-ordered ❤
Thank you! - Matthew
I started using Scrivener after doing this episode and today bought Aeon Timeline in their Black Friday sale, yay!
Another brilliant episode
thank you Gary!
Brilliant, can't wait to sit down and enjoy it. I'm holding off until Christmas week at least. I honestly look forward to your Christmas Novella's every year even more than Christmas dinner.
Hap and Leonard are a continued joy. Bad Chilli is one of my favourite all time novels. The Thicket is a fine novel, try it out.
Thanks for listening Edward!
well done, chap. no idea how / why the youtube algorithm (all blessings be upon it) pointed me here, but there we go. worth me at least offering - if you want it narrated for audible then i'm on ACX!
Thank you! To be honest my books don't seem to do much on Audible any more so I've stopped producing them. Hopefully you guys continue to find plenty of work now they're using AI to narrate! :-(
Comes out tomorrow? Sweet! That should give me enough time to finish reading the title.
lmao, if only I was paid by the words in the title...
@ 😂
Great song but needs more cowbell 😉😁
I'll need to buy one!
I read a lot of mid-19th-century to early 20th-century novels and memoirs and I can tell you that many of them have that same wordy style. I think it's from the naturalism school where authors think they have to describe everything to a tee. I have to fight to keep it from seeping into my own writing.
Was involved in a film a short while ago which was a homage to HPL. Filmed in Yorkshire it was called "The Shadow Over Whitby" - not sure when it is coming out though.
Whitby? They could do a homage to Edgar Allen Poe called "The Telltale Heart(beat)" Sorry.
@@StevenAMckayAuthor We actually did film some scenes near Goathland where Heartbeat was filmed!
@@davidmacey5422 Greengrass was pretty eldritch, honestly.
Great episode! I totally need to follow this guy. You guys are absolutely right about fencing. It’s true with most martial arts that have been converted into sports. They teach you things that will get you killed on the street.
A good writer.
I love the cover art. Cheers.
Cheers! Yeah, it's always a bit nerve racking when you get an email with your new cover art in it. You're never sure what to expect or if you'll like it or not. I was VERY pleased when I saw this cover!
Thanks for a fine interview with such a powerhouse woman! Diana is an incredible author & we truly appreciate all the amazing novels she’s written.
Another wonderful interview with Diana Gabaldon! A big thank you to the HNS 2024 Conference, and Rock, Paper, Swords for sharing it 🙂 It was the Historical Novel Society who reviewed my novel ‘Sheep Are Simply Less Trouble Than Scotsmen’ in May 2024, and said, ‘Fans of Diana Gabaldon will enjoy this Highland romp.’ I promptly fell off my chair and still haven’t recovered! 😂 ❤
Thank you, and congrats on a great review!
😄
Wind Rose reminds me of Alestorm.
Just as a point of interest re: secret passages. Most castles, fortified houses etc definitely did have sallyports and a lot of them were purposefully filled in/collapsed for defensive purposes when under siege/became dangerous. Knaresborough Castle near me has a great existing 13th/14th C sallyport.
Very interesting talk. For my recent book (The Tynedale Raven) I had a chapter where the characters travelled from London to Edinburgh and I had a great deal of fun researching the inns they may have stopped at on the route. Took me longer than anticipated so I had them travel back by boat from Musselburgh 🤣
I was first captivated by "Outlander" four years ago, particularly by the dance of the druids and the accompanying song. I was so drawn in that I couldn't stop watching the series and ended up buying all the books in both English and Bulgarian. Now, I'm also inspired by the music style. As a writer myself, she continues to motivate and inspire me.
That's great! Good luck with your creative endeavours!
Diana is a lovely person and such an intelligent writer. I'd love to have a glass of wine with her any day! Great podcast interview - thank you!!
Thanks for listening!
Welcome to the marvelous, indescribable woman that is Diana Gabaldon. She is truly amazing. I'll bet the interviewers went to go read all her books immediately after meeting her. So many of us simply hang on her every word. She is so cool!
We've interviewed a lot of great writers and artists over the years and she is certainly up there with the most successful and the nicest. :-) We both loved chatting to her.
Amazing to hear she listens to windrose :D.
It was a completely unexpected answer! :-)
I'd like to read those books, they sound exciting!
Great interview. I love her explanation of how her historical novel transitioned into a time-travel tale. Thanks for sharing!
thanks for listening!
Wow! 72? She looks no more than 40.
Time traveller indeed!
Incredible woman. Her writing is so full of life. Outlander is one of the best debut novels I have ever read. Thank you.
Another fab interview, thank you. Lots of interesting questions...and answers!
Our pleasure! Thanks for listening Nancy!
Thanks so much for this , I love Diana’s series of books 😍
Thanks for listening!
Great interview, ladies of Rome!
Cheers Nancy!
Many thanks for interviewing us - we had fun!
Thanks for talking to us. 🙂
Absolutely perfect!! I love Clive mantel and Robin of Sherwood!! My absolute favorite Tv show.❤❤
Glad you liked the episode!
Yes ! I love his Robin Hood books.
Thank you!
Thank you for this! I was sorry to miss the Devon conference but hope to see some of you in Las Vegas next year.
Glad we could give you a little flavour of the Devon conference. 🙂
Loving the short videos from the conference. David's books are brilliant and I'm always anticipating his next book
Thanks! Plenty more short videos coming.
Fantastic ! 😍
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
It is a delight to see great writers in conversation. Darlington is idyllic !
Thanks! Plenty more coming!
Great news! The interviews were all thoroughly enjoyable. We are living in a golden age of historical fiction. I see I wrote Darlington instead of Dartington. The joys of autocorrect.

It would be great if you could ask the author for their recommendation on where to start in their catalogue of books.
Good idea, we'll take that on board, thanks!
The next Saxon tales books has to be about Uthred the Younger as the new lord of bebbanburg since his father and finan are old graybeards.
Fools and Mortals, as I have said on other platforms, is perhaps one of my favourite Cornwells other than the Arthur series. I'm not normally a Tudor/Jacobean fan but anything to do with the playhouses of London is fascinating. And if Shakespeare is a part of the narrative, I'm thrilled. I do hope Bernard is able to write a companion novel to Fools and Mortals if he has the time.
A possible reveal for another Uthred book 📖. Maybe this one will be about his son and his adventures. 🙏
Interesting idea, I never thought of that. Could go on for a few books then!
Is this event always in Devon or different venues each year?
It's in different places each year. Every other year it is in the UK. Next year it is in Las Vegas.
