Tetsu & Reid
Приєднався 6 тра 2023
Hello! We are Tetsu and Reid, a Japanese and American couple living in Japan with a goal to travel around the country, van style!
We chose this path after being separated for three years due to boarder closures. We want to make up for our lost time together.
This is our experience buying a used van in Japan that we are converting into a livable space for our trip. We will show the process of creating our micro home and the travel that follows next!

[Tashirojima, Miyagi] Japan's Cat Island! Over 150 cats! 150匹の猫が住む島田代島に行ってきた!
Tashirojima! One of Japan's cat islands. Off the coast of Miyagi prefecture is a tiny island with no more than 50 residents. The cat population here is around 150! Originally cats where brought in to help with pests for this tiny fishing island. As time goes on there are less and less people living here but the cat population is growing. While it seems like a cat paradise, in reality the cats are needing more help as the human population declines. Volunteer vets come once a month to check on that cats condition but many cats avoid the help. There needs to be more cat population control and care. We think the amount of tourists is promising to create a better future for the cats and we hope the island can utilize this in creating a real cat paradise.
While this island is a big spot now for tourists there is not very much information on the place. We missed some major rules in our naivety to the island. So let us tell you if you plan to come to the island! No feeding the cats! but you can donate cat food near the shrine at the top of the island. No catnip! Every cat reacts differently and it's best to avoid this. No toys! Unfortunately you cannot play with the cats... which was news to us! We brought a cat toy and played with them for almost an hour before discovering a sign with this rule. Toys can be ingested by accident without proper supervision. (Luckily I knew this already with my own cats and was very watchful when playing) We hope the island can make their own approved toy for purchase so the cats can have more stimulation and play time while making a small profit to help with their care. lastly no filming in the road. We took this rule as be aware of your surroundings and don't block oncoming cars with your filming. However you may never even have a car coming your way. regardless be mindful!
To arrive to Tashirojima you can get on the boat at two ports in Miyagi.
Ajishima line chuou port is a 15 minute walk from the train station (Ishinomori Station) or if you have a car you can park at Kadonowaki and have a slightly shorter ride. This is the port we got on! At the moment it's ¥2500 for a roundtrip ticket.
There are two ports at Tashirojima. Odomari and Nitoda. The day we arrived the first port Odomari was skipped and the ferry went straight to Nitoda. So please take care on the return boats. There are limited return boats and you should probably use the main port, Nitoda.
You can support the cats by donating food or buying some souvenirs at the top of the island!

Fukushima & Miyagi Last Sakura Trip!

The end of our sakura journey is here and we're feeling a bit sad about it! Spring in Japan is really special. I (Reid) am from a yellow pollen state in the U.S. I much prefer experiencing the beautiful pink filled country rather than breathing in yellow pollen powder! We go to quite a few places in this video. We finished going to our most anticipated spots and visit the remaining few. Many of...

いいね……18歳まで岐阜県民でしたので懐かしいです

It looks like a very interesting place to go, but sad as well that some of the cats are poorly
Too many times I wanted to take a cat I met home! I hope this place can improve in the future. I heard the other cat island is like this as well
@TetsuReid Lucky you didn't have the van, it would have been full of cats. I guess with depopulation it is hard to care for so many cats, especially if they keep having kittens
@@nataliepriddle9909 Yes we noticed some of the cats had been fixed (chipped ears) I feel someone needs to be in charge in tracking this to help. But maybe someone is in charge and working on it! We have no idea how things are run on the island. and yes I named every cat that I met!
@TetsuReid I hope they can make some positive changes so all the cats can be well. Haha, got to name a cat if you see one!
Thank you for this video Reid and Testu, and for explaining about the rules. I love cats, and animals in general, and sometimes I dont know what is actually good for them or not. I want to stop them from being hungry, and if they like playing, they should play. But on the other hand, I also dont want to do anything that will hurt the animals or go against nature. I think that in Japan, a lot of people love animals, but they do things that are not good for animals - like animal cafes (especially when wild animals are concerned) and places like the fox village, where you can pet wild animals like foxes. They dont do it with a bad intention, quite the opposite. But it is harmful to the animals and not natural. In places like the different cat islands, it would be tempting to feed the animals (and again: its well meant), but it shouldnt be done, for different reasons. When playing is involved, with animals like cats, who need stimulation, its a bit different though. .
All that is of course just my opinion. I find it amazing (in a very good way), how most people in Japan respect rules. We could learn so much from Japan in that matter. And please stop appologising Tetsu, you did nothing bad out of intention.
Thank you for this comment! These are all things I’ve thought of too. I’ve stood stunned in front of an owl cafe and shocked at a monkey staring back at me in a pet store. I know there’s no intended harm and it’s a lack of knowledge but as an animal person it’s hard to see! I hope the island can do more for the cats, I think there is a big chance with the amount of tourists to create a better environment for them. I can imagine a local vet, indoor housing, a supervised play area! There’s a lot that can be done here! Thanks for the comment again!
Izu Oshima Island looks really beautiful, untouristy and very special. We dont drive, so have to rely on public transport. Is it possible to visit most of the places you visited by bus (and sometimes a taxi) ? Or would you not bother to go there if your able to rent a car ? Thanks a lot for your answer.
@@swissfoodie3542 Oshima is a very unique spot in Japan! But due to the low population (even with tourists), it’s an area that’s best traveled with a car. Busses are limited in frequency and in location. For example the mountain top dessert is only accessible via car. It’s possible to bike around but only really feasible to do so in the more urban areas. Personally for me (Reid) this is one spot where I would rent a car! Thanks for the comment!
@@TetsuReid Thank you Reid for your answer, much appreciated. As we both dont drive, I think it will be best to not visit Oshima. Because if we are totally limited, its not worth going.
@ I think Oshima is a rare spot in Japan where you need a car! But luckily the majority of Japan you can get by without!
My dad also loved trains, so I totally understand your special connection Reid. A really cute video, thank you for it. So cute, and also nice souvenirs.
@@swissfoodie3542 being in a country full of trains makes me think of him a lot. I have a lot of appreciation for trains! Make sure to check the cat train master’s working days before you go! It’s up on their adorable Instagram
Thank you for this nice video, I really enjoyed watching it and so I just subscribed to your channel. We will be traveling around Tohoku in March and plan to visit Ouchijuku. And I also like cats a lot, so I will definitely check out the video about the station with a cat train master.

Yes, they are usually ¥500 but some smaller temples have them for ¥300 or special double paged ones for ¥1000! You can also collect regular stamps for free at train stations and michi-no-ekis!
