A fond farewell to Bretagne

We will shortly say farewell to the grande dame of the Brittany Ferries fleet on our Portsmouth - St Malo route. Here we take a light-hearted look at what we love about this beautiful ship. And why her replacement, a hybrid-electric vessel called Saint-Malo, will be a worthy successor.
Impatient de monter à bord... BF est vraiment N°1
Had some great holidays to brittany that started on this very vessel
I thought she was being retired at the end of this year. Was going to book for early December but now she’s gone forever 😢
Gabegie de l'argent Breton pour enrichir les Chinois !
Shame she has gone , have great memories when I used to entertain on there in the mid 90’s ,the crew were great and I feel privileged to have been there
Goiing to miss the Queen of Bretagne, especially that fantastic restaurant. Like the Boeing 747, she was a queen. That proper ocean going bow will be missed too. But her time was up. Thanks Nigel for the tribute film. I feel a painting of Bretagne coming on.
Looks promising, no doubt about it. But having it made in China, a totalitarian country with tight ties to Russia, I can´t justify a trip with her ;)
Bretagne is far superior 👌.
In what way?
@@BFNewsroomfor starters she looks better, she's unique, and has better passenger capacity, but everything is about money and freight today I guess....
Replacement for Bretagne? Big shoes to fill, as we say in English. I hope they've been a bit more imaginative with the interiors than previous e flexers, they seem a bit bland. We'll find out soon enough.
@@dominicwood3451 well yes they've worked a bit more on the interior and It will be better, especially with Goudie's paintings, but won't replace Bretagne in our hearts
3:04 I agree with him on everything, but those cabins on the Bretagne are a whole tier above the Saint Malo’s cabins, the new ship’s cabins just look a bit too clinical and sterile compared to Bretagne’s cabins which in comparison to St Malo, look much more comfy and cozy
Hi Leo, there'll be no occasional cabbage smell in the corridors either. :-) I think most families will prefer the new, clean, bigger cabins, but take your point that Bretagne''s were nice n cosy
We sailed on her in August 1990 after taking semi retirement and enjoyed her first anniversary voyage. Many trips later have been enjoyed 😊 !!
I❤your ships
Looking forward to going to Saint Malo again in this new ship. But is it going to cost more?
My wife and I sailed on Bretagne when we went on honeymoon in St Malo in 2015. The next time we went was this July with our 6 year old little boy. Lovely ship. She’ll be missed.
Boats are not female. Stop saying "she". It is "it".
yes, they are. No we won't.
Oooooh why the expense of producing such a fine video and then not pronouncing her name properly ? 😱 The lady hostess at the start was so gracious and pleasant in helping Nigel with this, yet he (a company employee) carries on and ignores her good counsel. Incroyable. 😜 A fine ship, travelled on board her in the 90s. 👍
That surprised me too. It doesn’t show the English in a good light. Some of us try to make the effort with the pronunciation.
@@ianwalshaw1274 Erm, you do realise that was the (slightly laboured) joke?
… lovely video and very informative❤
Last tuesday I was in Le Havre for work and was surprised to see the Bretagne docked there. When I left, I saw it heading inland. Little did I know, it was for the last time! 😮 I’ve seen this ship many times. It’s crazy that I spotted it in Le Havre by accident after its final voyage!
Sad times.
Great memories as a child with my family and my friends , think of all the great times and the millions of people who sailed on her , I was lucky enough to go onto the bridge and steer the ship as a child with the Brittany ferries Matalots club … great days and better times ❤
We did the Portsmouth st Malo a few weeks ago and came back from Santander on the hybrid on Sunday. A week later we are back to say goodbye to the beautiful Bretagne on her final voyage! It was worth begging to take more holiday from work I don’t have to see her once again! Pyers Easton and I can hardly wait!
What a lovely video and so pleased to see that you are giving the old girl such a well deserved sendoff. We can't wait to be on the final trip tomorrow night to raise a glass to her, something we just had to do. One last trip to the buffet (maybe even sneaky seconds!) and a pint (or three) in Gwenn Ha Du. I have so many fond memories of this beautiful ship over the decades, especially watching my two girls growing up dancing and singing along to the likes of Frozen at the kids discos, sleeping like a baby in the Commodore cabins, and, above all the fabulous food in Les Abers, which heralded the start of many a wonderful road trip in France. The funny thing I might miss the most though; driving through her 'jaws' in Portsmouth to start many an adventure. Bye bye Bretagne. We love you xxx
Very nice video. Enjoyed working for Brittany Ferries for 10years, joining before Bretagne joined the fleet and the anticipation was justified as she was a real game changer who everyone fell in love with instantly. She really epitomised everything good about what Brittany Ferries represented and set the standard for others to beat and for new fleet mates to learn from. Fully understand the economies of scale and benefits of replacing the fleet with variations of the same basic design but part of the charm of travelling with Brittany Ferries was the unique design and style of different members of the fleet on different routes. It’s a shame to no longer have this.
I sailed on this Grand Old Lady during her first season as well and every year since (bar Covid) - she's a legend in steel. They should be replacing Amorique with Bretagne or flogging her to whoever ends up serving the Channel Islands to replace the junk they have been using up till now. I will be on her last voyage to Portsmouth this weekend to say goodbye😥 Adieu, Ship of Dreams - you will not be forgotten.
I travelled on this ship in 1992 Plymouth to/from Santander. Still recall waking up in the morning to the smell of freshly baked pastries, and on less glorious note being very seasick whilst in the Bay of Biscay. On the outbound sailing I made the mistake of having a window cabin over the back of the ship, far from ideal for a poor sailor. Still, I have fond memories.
Triste de me dire que je ne verrai plus le Bretagne chaque matin depuis la digue des Bas-Sablons, pose "voyage" avant d'aller travailler. Mais le Saint-Malo devrait être lui aussi agréable à regarder et source d"évasion !
Still miss the Prince of Brittany!
a fabulous ship. You are right.
Such a superb, heart-warming informative video Nigel...both ships incredible in their own ways, and class-leaders for their own generations. I was on Bretagne's first sailing, and enjoyed being on board for 100s more...looking forward to seeing the St-Malo close-up too. Well done to Bretagne's crew, and St-Malo's design + build team.
Love this video Nigel and well done Chris excellent voice of Fred 😂
Many thanks Nigel for this video about our old lady Bretagne and his daughter Saint ;-)
Eco friendly batteries 😂. Wonder how much they take out of the planet!! All these electric batteries are just rubbish it's worse for the environment!!! Saint Malo is just another boring, bland E Flexer it will be nothing like beautiful Bretagne and thebe Flexer will be in the scrap yard not long after 10 years !!!
Looks great - no mention of charging points for electric/hybrid cars though?
Cant you charge it up before you board? I cant put petrol in my car on board.
unfortunately I don't think there allowed to have them, but I don't know maybe.
Seems nothing similar to Les Arbers will feature onboard. Very poor catering concept proposed. Problem of being Anne flexer. Commodore buffet won’t cut it.
Sadly I think Pont Aven will be the last of the proper buffet restaurants on Brittany Ferries. I tried Salamanca and it was good, but not a patch on Bretagne sadly.
@@pyerseaston4267 Mont St Michel has a lovely restaurant however I believe Pont Aven and Mont St Michel will be the only 2 with proper A la carte restaurants
Excellent video Nigel!
At least pronounce her name correctly.
Ya know, I'm sure he does know, he does work for the company. Most Brits don't pronounce it correctly so he was clearly having a bit of fun. :)
I mirror George's comments, thank you for producing this lovely video on everyone's favourite Brittany Ferries' vessel. Saint Malo has big boots to fill so I'm so happy that even more of Bretagne's artwork will be being transferred. I'll be on Bretagne's final sailing as well as Saint Malo's first sailing and looking forward to both with some trepidation but also excitement. I sailed on Bretagne's maiden season as a young boy to Santander with my parents. Thank you.
A lovely acknowledgement of a ship that has a special place in so many hearts.
