We aren't fans of KOA either! What a cool find!!
Yes, it was a surprise, thanks for checking out the vid.
Are any of these campsites good for off-roading
Good question. These are not for off roading, you will need to look into Florida State Forests for that type of recreation.
Is that traffic noise, or just wind I hear in the background? Extra points if there's no traffic noise. BIG extra points.
Its was infact some light wind. This park is very free from noise.
Funny how so many state parks charge $40-55 and this one just manages to prove a damn good price is STILL POSSIBLE.
Yes, Our state Forest camp sites for tenting is rather on the super cheap side.
Hey! Great video! Thanks for stopping by. We hope to see you again soon! ❤
Thanks for noticing our video, we had a great stop at this one, will look into more of them as we travel.
I’m camping there now! I love this place. I watched this video before booking. Thanks for sharing. Oh, by the way, I met Kevin and Rhonda here as well. Great campground and making great new friends! What could be better!
Yes, they texted me that they had met you. I have watched your videos also. i subbed you back.
Def take advantage of our channel; we have some free camping here in Florida and we put some on video that maybe good for ya if you do that type of camping.
KOA's were overrated. Never did like to camp at them. 13.51 a night is not bad at all. It looks like there is sun for solar. I can only make it a few days without full sun. Thanks for the video. Hope you all didn't get any ticks rummaging around those high weeds. I like doing that too.
sites 6 thru 11 have power
Ive heard Florida residents get first crack at camp grounds, is it state, county, or private or all? Can I work- camp at these state parks?
Good question, Florida residents get to book 11 months in advance for state Parks, nonresidents get to book 10 months in advance, all other parks does not apply like that. But these WMA Free camping area can be booked only 30 days out for everyone.
There is no work camping at the free areas.
I never knew about a KOA campground closing, or any campground for that matter. But I admit that I've been out of the camping world for a long time and was simply unaware.
Yeah it was a pretty cool discovery.
Most of the time the A frame bldg survived and the next person still uses it so you can tell from the road. Lots of them have shut down because people got tired of being on top of each other. The only people that use them now are usually people who like the pools and hot tubs. Nothing wrong with that of course if it is what people like. You won't be seeing wildlife there.
@@ruabadkitty I agree, we have used these places a few times, when we have bugged out of Florida to escape the Hurricanes. but yeah, i too was wondering what happened to the A Frame building, perhaps it was in bad shape to keep it or it had no purpose being part of the new campground. Thanks for the comment.
@ruabadkitty I liked KOA to an extent because there were corporate standards to be maintained and could be counted on for each and every one. They tended be a little more expensive than others though. I wonder how many closed (or opened then closed without me paying attention) after the ~1970's.
@@joewoodchuck3824 KOA's are franchises so when they close it's because they didn't turn a profit. I googled how many are left and there are 500 in USA and Canada. Also Google said the KOA brand was sold a few yrs back and a lot of the rules changed. There was no info about how many closed over the years. Your right about the high standards they kept. I camped with a friend yrs ago and he was always staying at KOA's I can't even remember and out of order sign on a washing machine. They are nice. We have a beautiful one here near St Pete but it is expensive. They charge from 120 to 160 bucks per night depending on the day and that's basic RV. I will never pay a price that high.
Is this the campground located right on Indian Lake? I'm a local lol. I've hiked there and photographed some birds there. I just thought it was a tiny forest service campground.
Yes its the same, it was a former KOA campground like 20yrs ago.
Awesome that they sold it and changed it to a nice well maintained campground with lots of room for each site.
We still have the area to camp, thats the main thing for sure.
Are Nos. 4 &7 the same place?
The same campground yes, but same sites, no, they have a lot of space between each site.
Yeah, we hate KOA, too many people piled on top of each other. Nice that the purchased it and turned it into a better campground.
Totally agree! We tried it a few times, and just a Big No for us.
one account i heard someone disliked dirt bikes in that forest, stretched a thin hard to see cable between some trees, a rider was seriously injured
oh, that's terrible
Music sucks
Thanks, so ive been told over and over.
I have reservations for a few nights there next month. Doesn't look like my solar panels will be getting much sun at the campsite, but I will check out the Morris Bridge park. Thanks for the tip.
Well just remember. You can set up your rig wherever you wish, there are no actual sites, just a designated area. so I'm thinking on the edge of there wooded area you may be able to grab some solar power from their.
@@xx84gnxx I inquired about it with the SW FL Land Management District and a Senior Land Use Specialist replied that I can't camp there. I have to be "inside the campground boundary". So I asked where that was and have not yet heard back.
@@travelingtophe well look at the video again, right when i do the loop turn around that RV Classs A is in a good spot where you can use your solar.
@@xx84gnxx Yes I think the loop is where they want us to camp. I was hoping to use that open area on the right before you get to the loop and apparently that is not part of the "campground boundary." This time of year, I need a lot of open sky to the SW and SE as the sun is so low on the horizon. I'll bring the panels and see what I can get.
@@travelingtophe only at the loop is the campground. the open area just happens to be mowed for some reason.
Cool place I like Ocala but there is a lot of trash. People just don’t care. Thanks for the video
Yes, so i have learned a lesson. That some areas are not so camper friendly.
@ but if you need a place they can still be a welcome place.
I dont recommend any of those unnumbered roads in 2WD, the traction changes on a regular basis depending on who went 4 wheeling before you? Also in spring lots of the back roads get overgrown with limbs and brush. That dog wont last long around the ponds, Keep pets and small children away from fhe water edge, Ive been exploring those roads since 1965, Be careful if you go camping in any of those areas that are remote, Anyone that regulary camps remotely knows the potential dangers. If your new to the Ocala NF start exploring the numbered roads first, Its all a beautiful area , Enjoy and be safe!
Thank you for the advice. Safety is our priority.
Yeah, I only live 7 miles from that park. I like the nature trails. I believe the campground was just finished a year or so ago. At the bottom of the west side of lake has a 90’ hole 🕳️ at the bottom. I’m surprised the water level went that high ? Trying to remember, maybe when Debby came by ?
I didn't know they had a 90’ hole at the bottom of the lake.
I live not far from that area . I would not camp out there ! I just go to the national parks like Alexander springs in the area . It’s worth the price to me ! 😁🇺🇸
Yes, we camped the springs also, they are nice!
@ I will check out more of your playlist. I have noticed over the years that the word camping has changed. It has become non minimalist. And people consider glamping as camping ⛺️. Now people take a gigantic sticks & staples into the camp grounds. Just an observation . Happy travels! 😁
@@ralphp3057 You are right, im guilty of using the word camping with our travels. But to me. i respect every single person that gets outdoors in whatever way to see the outback of the country. we are a small percentage of the population that does this. so many folks that never done any camping or ever will, will never see the amazing country we have.
Trash leaving trash is the norm here in Florida. So is shitting beside the road and leaving toilet paper as some kind of marking technique. Welcome to white trash heaven.
I go off roading frequently in the Ocala National forest and sadly the trash is a normal sight. You will find large piles of it that people simply throw on the side of the trails. Luckily they recently started going through the trash when cleaning it up to try to identify the owner(s) to fine them. I really hope it puts a stop to the garbage dumping as it is destroying an amazing place that we are lucky to have. I often see things like couches, chairs, carpets, broken toilets, boats; yes you read correctly, abandoned boats.
wow, so this area is much worse then what we seen. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Nasty people fry my last nerve. Absolutely no reason to leave human waste laying around. I never heard of that place. I wouldn't be able to get my van in there. Cool video though. TY
Thanks for watching the video. It's unfortunate that some campers don't practice "leave no trace" principles.
If you knew the local area better you would know that a lot of people use the ocala forest for night parties while camping. Booze and drugs rule and common respect is nowhere near.
yes, thats what im slowly realizing. a shame that the local authorities isnt monitoring the area more closely.
I camped in ONF for years-- you are so right, free campsites are every where, never camp there alone, I have camped in ONF for nearly 40 years, never had a probole except the drunks and party people ----I call them white trash,- my protection is a very large mean dog, I hang signs around my campsite warning intruders , only every had one , who thought he could get past the dog , that poor guy learned a lesson real fast, my dog has a very long 30 foot leech, when he barks and the intruders get a look at the dog it keeps them away. ONF is a beautiful place, to bad we have white trash ruining it.
Todays people have no respect for anybody or anything. They were raised to live in trash.
It breaks my heart to see the campsites like that in the forest! People especially campers should know better! You should always leave with more trash than you came with, clean up whatever you see if you're camping there, especially if it's free, it's the least we can do for the forest! Thank you for bringing attention to this, it's so beautiful and yes definitely bring your four-wheel drive LOL😊 my sugar Sand will suck you up and bury you! Stay safe❤
Thank you for the encouraging comments.
Maybe try Delancey, it seemed pretty clean when we stayed a few years back, but regardless florida has changed so much since when I was a kid, there are friday and Saturday nights parties going on out there just has it has happened everywhere you go nowadays. It seems rangers are no longer interested in these parks anymore. The new saying for us is IF IT IS FREE IT IS NOT FOR ME. Just being real. Good luck. 😊
I will check out the Delancey, thanks for the suggestion. We do have a few other places we are going to and will keep ya updated. Thanks for the comment.
Well book a motel room then
skunk ape waste ..known area for them
Years ago I used to camp in ocala and go deer hunting. And one day I went to a spot that I’ve never been to and there was so many broken bud light bottles that it seemed equal to the amount of sand I shit you not.
Wow! yeah lots of beer cans all over the place here, the broken glass i seen was large pieces of flat glass, like windows. strange. Thanks for your comment.
@ right
The forest people (aka homeless) live out there!
i have seen homeless camps before. no evidence of it being that, unless they was already trespassed and this was the area in a clean situation after them. thanks for the comment.
The place is dangerous for normal campers - Stay out - Drugs, Homeless, Guns, Lots of drinking etc, People with not a lot to lose, So it's smart to just let them enjoy it among themselves and you go to the many other campgrounds near by.
well, thats what we was doing. looking for some new spots we never camped at and was checking to see if we could fit or at least video share for others to discover our beautiful state, and by chance it was trashy. Thanks for the comment.
During dog rifle season I imagine it will not be at its best. Sad
its was strange though, 2 dif camp sites and both site had dif type of gun shell casings. thanks for the comment
The people coming in and leaving all that trash is most likely kids partying and don't have any respect for the forest there are hundreds of nice campsites in that forest that the locals will come in and clean up instead of messing it up I hunt and camp in there a lot and very seldom have had to clean before I camped have a wonderful new year every one ,God bless
yes, it did cross my mind. Thanks for your comment
My family went to tell us hill for our first camp trip
Oh! i hope it was a forever memory for your family. We do have a second video coming up on this park, but it has a secret twist about the park. Hope to see you out there somewhere. Happy trails
So sad what is wrong with people.
Im not sure why some people would go out of they way to do this. its actually more effort to mess it up then clean up after your self i would think.
But you’re a Browns fan, you ought to be used to trash….😂😂😂
These spots are notorious for late night “party visits” by locals looking to get drunk in the woods and maybe play with their guns. There is NO WAY that you would find me there after dark.
Thank you for your comments
Very nice. I have a little 15 foot A frame pop-up camper. Do you know if they allow that in the tent sites? I couldn't find any info on their website? Really nice little park. Been thinking about getting out of the cold for a few weeks and come down to florida. Lived in south FL for many years. I'm in the nc mountains now.
Sites 1 thru 5 is for tents only, the others are for RV's any size is allowed.
I live 10 miles from the southeastern corner of Ocala National Forest, have never heard of this place. It is pretty much to be expected that any public area of ONF that is accessible by vehicle will be trashed.
Yes we never herd of this place either but was disappointed how nasty it was.
People suck
some folks just dont get what impact they do on the neg side of what they are doing sometimes.
....desolation alley. Don't touch that squirrels nuts, it makes him crazy!😊
???
Thanks for the share, we don't be adding that one to your list though 8) I can't imagine anyone getting in there with any size rig, the branches were scraping your truck let alone an RV. It's so sad to see people being horrible humans.- Kyle and Michelle
yeah, i the area needs to be cleaned up and monitored to bring it back to where it should be and make it better than an abandoned feel.
I use to ride my 4wheeker there in the Ocala forest and was told by several people to watch my back, they said the homeless would rob you.
I hope thats not true, but you never know for sure
@xx84gnxx I rode there a few times and never seen anyone living in the woods
I'm 63 years old and have been going to ONF since I was 14. It has changed a lot and has become a rather dangerous place due to the remote areas and people that inhabit them. I will never go there unarmed and would never stay at a remote campsite. There are quite a few undesirable people that live in the forest.
Yes i have things remember also as a kid, things do change, some for the good, some for the worst. Thanks for your comment.
feel free to stay in Michigan or New York. im sure your campgrounds are much cleaner. Ive been camping, hunting and fishing for 50 years in this area. it didnt start getting bad until the rush to move to Florida. We say that all the nuts roll downhill to Florida. People from out of state do crazy, stupid things and then the press calls him "Florida Man.
Thanks for the heads up, but once we travel out of our Home State Florida, we dont go off grid, we plan our stops that have comforts of electric and water, sewer.
We call it twin ponds on river road. Never camped there but big bass. Caught a 8 lbs and my son caught a 13lbs.
i was wondering how the fishing was, the lakes seemed big and undisturbed, meaning not a lot of angler's hit this up often. Thanks for the fishing tip.
@xx84gnxx if you go north on river road to the 3way , take a right on the paved road there is two ponds on the right. The bowl and silver dollar, they camp around silver dollar. The problem is the homeless and rainbows will do long term camping until they get ran out.
I used to motorcycle camp in the forest 8 years ago. One thing about an area like that with free camping is that it sometimes attracts desperate people and people on the run from another state. I'm not saying they are necessarily bad people; they are just desperate people who occasionally do desperate things to survive. There are free campsites at some of the places where they have a host of sorts to keep an eye on things, get visits, and give updates to the rangers who come by occasionally. Even still, I always carried a sidearm just in case.
We have done fair amount of free camping, mainly over the cooler months, then the summer (hotter Months) we hit up Rv Resorts, state Parks that has water electric. but have been in some of the free locations to where you could tell some folks are not doing so well. but never had an issue of a threat at any time. yes, we do have "Home Defense" also. just too bad its that type of world now. but we love to explore all over and Florida is our home state. cant wait to what else will be around the corner. thank for your comments.
@@xx84gnxx We are getting older now and starting to slow down. We love primative camping and try to avoid RV parks because of the associated noise. We have found a wealth of promise in the many (little advertised) parks that counties, water management districes, Army core of engineer properties, etc. have to offer. Many at a low cost to free depending on ammenities. We have found these to feel safe, I think mainly because they are not well known. Best of luck to you.
I do not do any camping, but do go off roading fairly frequently in the Ocala National Forest and I always bring a fire arm for protection. You never know who you might run into out there. Better have one and not need one rather than need one and not have one.
Some areas around the ONF are free and in good condition, though not perfect; you'll see trash here and there. This is common, considering it's a vast forest, making it impossible for rangers to cover all areas without an army. I always bring an extra-large yard bag to pick up what I can. Regarding security, I've never had an issue. I've seen four-wheelers and dirt bikes, but they just pass through without causing trouble. For camping, I recommend areas with cell service; some spots have no signal at all, which is a red flag. As many have suggested, carry some form of protection, limit your stay to one or two nights, and trust your instincts. Thanks for sharing this great information in the video. Happy New Year 2025!
Thank you for your information. We too have come across trash in camps before, but not like this, and yes we have cleaned them up also. was taken back to how much and how far a person i willing to go to think this is ok. again, thank you for your input.
