Gardens of the Moon Review and Malazan Discussion
Why does that You Like It Darker design work so well haha. Nice vid and answers Al. I'm starting my first Cromwell book this month so that'll be interesting I think.
Cheers mate 👍 So hyped for your thoughts 😎
Nudity in your videos 🤣 You could start some weird Booktube trend of Naked books. Really Interesting answers there.
I hope you waited until after 9 o’clock to watch that bit 😬
I'm with you for Hounds of the Baskerville. That's the one people always bring up for greatest mystery novel. In an episode of Longmire (adaptation of a series), Longmire gives a copy to his deputy, because you can learn a lot about detective work 😊
Definitely. It will be great to get that one off the TBR for sure.
"Thanks for tagging me," he said as he wet the top of his pencil on his tongue and started to take notes. By the way, Raymond Chandler is awesome.
Excellent! I am so hyped for The Big Sleep 👍
Great tag mate! I have heard awesome things about Lonesome Dove, sounds fantastic even as a horror reader. The Eyes Of The Dragon is a seriously underrated novel, I loved it! I really enjoyed Shogun the book, not sure if I will be watching anything on tv. Let me know if you ever want to do a deep dive into Stephen King, or if you just want to have another live chat. Would love to hear your thoughts on Skullface Boy, fast becoming one of my favorite authors.
I’d love to catch up again on a live. Best stick to late in the year though as I do most my horror reading in the autumn 🍂.. for obvious reasons 🎃
Really have to get to «Roadside Picnic» in the Not Far Future! And «Shogun» was amazing indeed! 1. Best book so far in 2024: «Imperium» by Robert Harris (Cicero Trilogy #1, Historical Fiction about the Eponymous Roman Politician)! 2. Best sequel so far in 2024: «Brother Red» by Adrian Selby (Grimdark Fantasy, standalone «midquel» to «Snakewood» & «The Winter Road»), «Howling Dark» (Sun Eater #2) by Christopher Ruocchio (Space opera) & «The Fort» (City of Victory Trilogy #1, sequel to the «Vindolandia» Trilogy) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during Emperor Trajan’s Campaigns)! 3. New release I haven't read: «Disquiet Gods»(Sun Eater, #6) by Christopher Ruocchio (Space opera): A bit cheating, as I have not yet read book 3 to 5, but yeah, really looking forward to the next novels! 4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: Book #3 of «The Sundered Nation» Trilogy by Vaughn Roycroft, the Standalone Sequel of the «Edan» Trilogy by our dear Philip Chase & «The Fury of the Gods» (#3 in the «Bloodsworn Saga») by John Gwynne! 5. Biggest disappointment: I feel I am a bit spoiled, as I have not read any truly bad novels or have given up reading any books for a long time, but «Idoru» by William Gibson (Bridge Trilogy #2, Cyberpunk) was not bad, but still a small letdown from book #1, «Virtual Light» (3.5 out of 5, to «VL»’s 4.5). 6. Favorite new author: Christopher Ruocchio & Tad Williams 7. Biggest surprise: «Islands in the Net» by Bruce Sterling ((Post-)Cyberpunk), a really pleasant surprise, as I had prepared for a good cheesy 80s Cyberpunk story: Is there Hackers, Data Pirate Havens and Rastafarians? Sure, but unlike most dystopian Cyberpunk novels, this broke from the norm by having the 30-something mother of a toddler as the protagonist and interesting concepts such a Economic Democratic Cooperations (almost reminiscent of the ideas floating by Kim Stanley Robinson in his Sci Fi Novels, if not utopian then at least not at all the usual Techno/Neo-Feudalism of most Cyberpunk!) and genuine energy solutions ideas that might benefit smaller nations, as well as a use of psy-ops and drones that made it a lot more forward minded than I expected! 8. Book that made me happy: I have to say «Imperium» by Robert Harris: I had read Harris only once (his alt-history novel «Fatherland», set in a 1960s where the US did not join WW2 (but defeated Japan) and the World is divided into a Cold War between the USA and N@zi Germany: Great read, but obviously not full of laughs) but he not only nails the history and politics of Ancient Rome, following the ups and downs of Cicero is at times borderline satirical (but also serves as an encouraging) take on Modern Politics as well. 9. Newest fictional crush: I guess I have to say Laura Webster from «Islands in the Net», but I also have to give a shout out to Cicero’s Wife in «Imperium» (such a fun contrast but also weirdly fitting her husband! 😆) and to the Old Couple in «The Buried Giant» by Kazuo Ishigaro: So wholesome and heartbreaking! 10. Newest favorite character: Undoubtedly Cicero from «Imperium» 11. Book that made me cry. «Når landet mørknar» (Approximately «When The (This?) Land Darkens») by Tore Kvæven, Historical Fiction set during the 13th Century Norse Settlement of Greenland, think a Norse John Steinbeck! Well-worthy winner of the 2018 Brage Prize for Best Norwegian Novel! But will also shoutout «Stonehenge» by Bernard Cornwell (Man, the Human Sacrifice of Children hit me!) and «The Buried Giant» by Kazuo Ishigaro: Heartbreaking! 12. Most beautiful book so far this year: The new cover of my e-book copy «Queen Amid Ashes» (Sun Eater, #2.5) by Christopher Ruocchio, is gorgeous! Also: While it is visually very plain, obviously my inherited copy of «Brothers Karamazov» by Dostoevsky from my late Aunt have immense sentimental value! 13. What books do I need to read by the end of the year? After the novels I mentioned in point 4, I have to say the rest of the «Cicero» Trilogy by Robert Harris, the «Memory, Sorrow & Thorn» «Trilogy» by Tad Williams, the «Prince of Nothing» Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker, the final two novels in the «City of Victory» Trilogy by Adrian Goldsworthy and the final two novels in «The Expanse» by James S. A. Corey!
Yes! Need that Edan sequel! I can see you are loving Ruoccio, wish it was cheaper/easier to get his books over here 🙄. Cicero historical fiction does sound appealing 👌.
I love a good review too. good tag. I will be doing it.
Excellent 🫶
Great Review, you've got me interested but there's a long queue in front of it and we British love a queue😀
I know how you feel! I have my next 70-80 books planned out in order 🫣
One of my all time favorites. Reminds me that I am due for a reread. TBR is just too full to revisit. I highly recommend continuing with the sequels. McMurtry is a treasure. I also enjoyed his Last Picture Show and books in that series. Meanwhile, I normally just read Fantasy, Sci Fi, some Horror.
I definitely plan to get to the rest of the series. Like you I mostly read Fantasy, sci-fi and horror.
Sounds like an epic novel mate!
Epic is probably the right word for it mate
That Tigana is so beautiful! I love the colors. I've been reading KJ Parker's Saevus Corax series, but eventually I want to get Sixteen Ways too. And yeah, that Butcher one is kind of steamp punk fantasy, I really love it. Book 2 needed a bit of time to get going, but man, once it did...
Ooh nice to hear of someone who has read these series as there is a lack of opinion online about them it seems 👍
Lyonesse for some reason is rarelly mentioned on Booktube which is a shame as it's great. That Tiganna is a lovely edition. Great to see that version of Lord Fouls Bane, the chronicles are a Polarising read I'm on the , it's a masterpiece side. lots of other great books to get your teeth into.
You are right about Vance, in general really. It seems like only this year bigger booktubers have started mentioning him.
What an awesome haul, Big Al! Just read the «Lyonesse» Trilogy this spring, fantastic copy you have there! Looking forward to hear your thoughts on the Trilogy, but I think you will love Vance’s prose! 😊 Super cool 90s edition of «Tigana» too! 🤩 The «Siege» Trilogy by KJ Parker is hillarious! 😄
I have yet to read Parker, did not know he was fun too!
@@bigaldoesbooktube1097 Yeah, I have not read more of him myself, but I understand that under the pseudonym KJ Parker, the mood usually tends to be more serious/tragic and the humor tends to be more dry/dark, but as Tom Holt he has written a bunch of Humorous/Satirical Fantasy somewhat similar to early Terry Pratchett’s «Discworld» or «Monty Python»: «Expecting Someone Taller» (British Suburbia meets Siegfried the Dragonslayer/Nibelunglied), «Flying Dutch» (The Flying Dutchman), «Faust among Equals», «Djinn Rummy», «Who’s Afraid of Beowulf?», etc.
Ah I was unaware of his pseudonym. I really like Discworld and when I was a kid enjoyed Python on the telly.
Great Haul Mate. Vance has been recommended, will check it out. Hope you enjoy Wet Work, a really fun, blood-soaked novel. I've heard great things about Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I love Thomas Covenant, hope you enjoy the series. Magician is the place to start with Feist! Awesome fantasy series. Laymon has been hit or miss for me. Thanks for winding up my wife during the chat, I'm in deep trouble tonight! 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry mate 🫣, it was a really fun livestream 👍
Nice haul! You’ve reminded me I need to read Wetwork!
Cheers Olly 🙏, I’ve Cliff to blame for that purchase 😆
They punched a hole in the book cover?! That’s madness. Great find on Wisdom of Crowds! I have the floppy paperbacks, but I kinda want the uk hard covers as well just to have them 😂 I’ve had 16 ways to defend a walled city for a while, but haven’t read it yet. I’ll be curious to see what you think if you get to it before I do.
I’ll also be very curious to hear what you think of Laymon 😂 he’s certainly not for everyone, but I’ve had fun with some of his books. They’re all ridiculous. I’ve definitely filled my shelves!
I’m sure you’ll get to it first 😬
I always loved the Zorro movie as a kid. I’ve never read any of the books. ⚔️
Much like the movies you get what you come for
Im trying to get my parents to let me read this book to get the game
Great book and even greater game.
@@bigaldoesbooktube1097how many hours will this take?
I am an incredibly slow reader and it took me around 45 hours to read, so about 2 weeks. I think for some people 25 hours and about 8 days is probably the average.
@@bigaldoesbooktube1097 ok, kinda perfect because i wanted to finish it before 8days
@@bigaldoesbooktube1097why are words bolded at some paragraphs?
I've been.curious about this - got one as a 99p deal - we'll see!
Well at that price, why not 🤷🏻♂️

Not sure what for?? 😆
Did you know the word 'zorro' is Spanish for 'fox'? Knowing half the battle 💪🏻
You know I didn’t until I decided to read this book actually 🫡
Happy Anniversary, as a second Anniversary is tradtionally paper or cotton, maybe you could get a book 🤣. I've loved doing the Podcasts with you as well a definate highlight of my year and your coments and insight on your channel as well as other places are always interesting and fun. Here's to another year of trying to work out if this is all real or are we all living in some weird simulation. 😉
😆 here’s to never knowing, ignorance is bliss. Podcasty thing has been a definite highlight 😎.
Great answers! 👍 I gotta start reading Game of Thrones at some point. George RR Martin is a fellow Jersey boy. 😊 He and I may get along well
You will love the books. They have a real grounding in history that you’ll appreciate 👍
Nice job with this tag! Hong Kong looks like a really fun place to visit. I hope you can get your day with George so you can harass him to finish Winds of Winter! 😂
That’s the dream 😆
Great Job with the tag Big Al! I would say Enid Blyton's Magic Faraway Tree is the first book I really loved as a child. I need to re-read Dune as an adult, will probably see it in a whole new light. I stayed in Hong Kong for 3 nights and it was a serious culture shock There are some fun things to do there but most of it revolves around shopping.
Cheers mate, I’ve never read Magic Faraway Tree. Wow you’ve been to Hong Kong! You’ve lived an interesting life so I shouldn’t be surprised 🫡.
@@bigaldoesbooktube1097 I am fortunate that I have travelled far and wide both as a kid and adult.
I’m don’t disagree but I just had a blast the whole way through this book.
That is something that I’m not sure I’ve managed to get across in my reviews for this series. It is such good fun and there aren’t many series I’d rather read irrespective of what rating I may give another book or series.
Dinosaurs are still cool. I would be first in line to see a First Law movie. I hope the Best Served Cold movie comes out well 🤞🏻Please George don’t leave us hanging!
There is going to be a Best Served Cold movie 😮
@@bigaldoesbooktube1097 There is supposed to be! It’s in the very early stages. Hopefully it doesn’t fall through.
Amen to that 🙏
Nice that you have not had any stinkers 😊 I was an Enid Blyton child. Woohoo for a Sharpe book :) You did great with these answers 🎉 Thanks for the tag!
You’re most welcome ☺️
You did a great job with this tag. The one that you created ‘What Are You Known For Tag,’ is on my channel now.
Ah excellent, I’ll come over and check it out 👍
Thanks for the review! I'm hoping to try this book again in July.
Nice 😎 I’m just glad I enjoyed it after Deadhouse Gates which was a bit of a dip for me.
Happy Anniversary. So many books and so little time. Happy reading and best wishes with the channel.
So true, thank you 👍
"We have sieges . . ." Yep! Great to hear that Memories of Ice was an overall hit for you, Al! Also, I agree with you that "high fantasy" is a more apt label for Malazan than "grimdark."
I love high fantasy when an author can do it justice 👌
I’m glad you’re enjoying your Malazan journey!
I am thanks, will start House of Chains soon 😎
Lonesome Dove is great. It is worth the large page count.
Totally agree, what a book!
Perfect review. I’m a third of the way to finishing the audiobook and just as I’m about to throw in the towel in comes a beautiful passage. The length and tedium are often relieved by such beautiful passages and some very interesting autobiographical details. Still, I wouldn’t recommend nor expect to reread and cannot wait to finish it. It just doesn’t have the brooding power of Frankenstein.
Completely agree. I do not regret reading the book, though I wish it had the magnetism of Frankenstein.
Congratulations Al!
Cheers ma Julie ☺️
@@bigaldoesbooktube1097 Welcome!
Congratulations on 2 years. 🎉
Cheers Mike 🫡
Happy Anniversary 🥳🎉🍻 In addition to your channel, I regularly watch the others you mentioned too 😊 Happy reading! 📚
They are such great channels and I am confident you’ll make your two years too mate 👍
Congrats on your 2 year anniversary! Next Sunday, I will air your tag 'The What Are You Known For Tag.'
Yes Jess! 💪 So happy that someone likes my tag 🏷️
Our episode of Dear Dr. Fantasy was a highlight for me too, Al! You did an amazing job, and I don’t think anyone would have guessed you were having a migraine at the time. It has been my pleasure to interact with you here on BookTube, and I hope we will have the opportunity to chat again. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever want to collaborate, and happy anniversary for your channel!
I hope to one day be as well read as you Philip so I can participate in all the excellent conversations taking place. Thank you for your very kind words 🙏.
Congrats on two years mate! We should do it again sometime. For some reason I am not able to add celebration emojis, that sucks. I totally admire the fact that you balance booktube and life, keep at it! You have a great channel my friend, and if you ever feel like discussing darker stuff again, you know where to find me.
I think if I get a few more darker reads in it could be fun to revisit maybe Winter 25’, I’m convinced I can get some read by then. Especially Swan Song 😎.
Happy 2 year anniversary! 🎉 I’m glad to have found your channel and I love your content. I love Kat’s channel as well!
Thank you so much Alicia ☺️. Kat does have a great channel 👌
Woho congrats on 2 years! 🎉
Cheers pal 🙏
I just got Mysterious Affair at Styles! I'm looking forward to reading Christie from the beginning. As I'm reading, I think I'll always imagine David Suchet as the role 😊
I’m just reading the Poirot novels as there’s over forty just of those 😅. It is hard not to imagine him being Suchet.
I love Hastings as well! 😊 Lots of red herrings. Christie is the Queen of Red Herrings. Nice wrap up, AL! 🤩
She certainly is 😊 Thanks Kat 👍
Yeh for Dick (Philip K that is😉) and also for Mr Poe
😆 either way
