I write my entire book by hand, by chapters. Glue pieces of paper all over with additional notes and references 😂 I love writing ideas in pencil, and all my research too. Not clutch pencils, but good old fashioned wood. But black pen when I start the first draft. I then type out the novel, which becomes the second draft. No idea why I do this, it just feels right for the first draft to be hand written. I mean a book is never the first draft and the first chapter always changes 😂

Writing first drafts by hand is proving a really popular technique - we've come across so many more people using this method than we expected - love it!

@@publishingpushofficial I gotcha, tho I believe users become more loyal when their time is valued and kept in respect as max value. Chapters is just a way to show that to users, and they can understand at first sight just by chaps titles the quality of your content which is very high. So have no fear.

@@publishingpushofficialDo the chapters. Videos without chapters are beginning to fee amateur and unprofessional. Makes me think you don’t know your material well enough to structure it for ease of communication. I’m closing the window now without finishing the video. I’m not convinced that you know anything that I don’t. I see you have only 413 followers and 16 likes on this video. I’m not sure when this video was recommended to me. I normally do appreciate videos about books and authors. But this video has no chapters, no graphics-nothing. Moving on.

Great advice! Marathon in the middle is the worst! Starting projects always has that same dopamine hit but once the newness wears off, you gotta keep at it. I like Stephen King’s analogy of “shoveling sh*t from a sitting position”. It really puts it in perspective. For me, I know that if I don’t keep showing up to the page, I might walk away and never finish it.

I started writing fanfiction back when I was about 8-9 years old by hand in notebooks. This expanded to various crazy longer novels that were a combination of my ideas and borrowed stuff (still probably today what gets posted as fanfic) but it would take up multiple 5 subject notebooks and I continued writing hours a day like that all the way through high school In my American History class in high school, the teacher liked to include essays on tests where students could score as many points as possible with how much they could write. But it couldn't just be listing facts. It needed to be an essay. On my final exam for that history class, I scored 250 points on the exam (100 was an A+). My ability to just quickly write was insane compared to anyone else in the class. My teacher was blown away how anyone could write that fast in an organized way. But I had been doing it for years.

I wrote a novel by hand this year and found it easy. I had found that keying a draft into a computer didn't work at all for me. I have a typewriter and wonder if typing (typewriter) comes closer to handwriting than keying (computer). I will test this for novel number two.

    • @publishingpushofficial

I have always found journaling helpful for solidifying ideas and have seen the effect writing things by hand has had on people around me. My stepdad was a respiratory therapist, and he said he struggled in medical school. In order to retain things he learned in class, he said he not only wrote his notes, but copied them AGAIN to reemphasize to his brain it was important. My daughter also has ADHD, and can never remember anything she reads. But lately, she started writing notes in a journal as she was reading, and I’ve seen her comprehension increase! Maybe she’s not remembering it all, but at least she has a copy to go back and look at in her own words! Great video!

I am disabled, with hand-eye coordination problems. I always use a computer to write or print anything, because writing it out by hand first, then rewriting it on a computer just seems like a colossal waste of time. Also, writing by hand is terribly quaint these days...Sadly, I only have over thirty years of writing experience...what do I know? You're good at making UA-cam videos, though.

So true. Thanks Patrick. You can be more creative after writing rubbish? I can be critical of my character's voice. He wouldn't say that! Would he/she? You need though to keep the flow going. Dialogue, can drive a story forward., although not, at the time, how the character should respond! There is always going to be reflection and re-write. Then, the ineffective/ inappropriate sentences and dialogue can be addressed.

He complains regularly about his publisher and agent. he makes 7% on each book sold. The publisher has total control over cover design. Thanks very much Patrick for this breakdown. I first self-published in 2015. Now, have fourteen self-published books listed. Have been encouraged by good reviews over the years. In 2022, sales improved; an early novel started selling in UK. This novel previously went in USA, in 2017 and 2018. As a new author it's hard to get recognition in UK, without effective marketing and promotion. I do get listed with main retail outlets besides Amazon, but of course lack copy in actual reatail outlets. Main streamers will possibly run off a minimum 100,.000 copies for book shops presence. Glad now that I self-published. There is the copywright issue and with traditional publishing you need to get good sales to cover take - back from publisher, as mentioned. Over the years I submitted to main stream publishers, and have considered handing over copywright to traditional publishers, but have resisted. New authors, I was told, are likely to struggle, without a literary agent, who has a friend on a publishers board selection committee, who will promote his/her novel? I was seventy - years old, when my first novel was self - published. Have enjoyed self-publishing experience and, start a new novel or project well before I self publish a novel, play or anthology. That way, sales if not that good, I'm well into completion of a new nmanuscript ! amazon.com/author/grantsam and for commentary at samgrantpublicationscom.wordpress.com Best wishes, Colin (Sam Grant - author name)
