Grizzly Bear Encounter on the Beartooth Highway!!
August 14th 2024, driving back along the Beartooth Highway 212 heading toward Cooke City, we encountered FOUR grizzly bears - a momma sow and her three adolescent cubs. One of the cubs was mighty curious about what was going on inside the car in front of us....

40ish-mile one-lane barely maintained switchback route down canyon walls and through canyons of canyons! An absolutely marvelous, treacherous, 4x4 only dirt trail on a "at your own risk" level rarely seen in the US. Loved every bit of this rough ride and the reward of its amazing views.

Our first 1300 mile leg in our trek westward saw us arriving late Sunday night to an impossibly tight gate for hauling in a 30 foot trailer. But thankfully the highway was deserted and after a couple of backups and adjustments we made it through and found our spot for the week.

My daughter and I wanted to see the Northern Lights, forecast to be extraordinary on this Saturday night. So, at noon Sam says "lets drive to Duluth! I want to see Jay Cooke State Park". So we did. And then we went to Gooseberry Falls. I took my anamorphic lens and made the day for shooting video. The Northern Lights never did materialize that night.

Beartooth Hwy is the hardest place on earth to keep your eyes on the road. Ten thousand foot elevation! Been there many times but I never saw Gizzlies but saw a Moose several times where there is a pink treeless mountain with a roadside lake. Do you know where I mean?
Not exactly sure where you are referring to on that drive. But I have also driven it a few times myself, but only via a motorcycle. Was my first grizzly encounter in this area, and the Yellowstone area in general.
