    How did you fix the mouthpiece on the jSax?

  • @jswissman702
    @jswissman702 Рік тому

    This is a good video as other reviews I've seen just use the default mouthpiece. I recently bought a Yamaha soprano sax mouthpiece to see how I like it before spending money on a soprano sax (I'm eyeing a $700 Kessler). It's good to know that I can use it on a Jsax before taking the deep dive. There's certainly a chance I could get a Jsax and decide I don't want to spend the $700.

      @jswissman702 I own a few Kessler saxophones including their soprano. Everyone has their own tastes and comments but you will not be disappointed. They are also very helpful and knowledgeable and the build quality is excellent. They offer several different models and price ranges on all their instruments.

    I recently purchased a JSax more for a bit of fun than anything else. I double on sax in a couple of bands but I'm mainly a keyboards player. I own a soprano, alto and tenor sax and have a fairly well-developed embouchure and although I wouldn't put myself out there as a sax player I have a reasonable command of the instrument. The first thing I noticed is even with the supplied mouthpiece the Jsax tends to pitch a bit sharp of C tuning. There isn't a lot of room to pull the mouthpiece off the neck tube to correct this without the mouthpiece becoming loose. I wrapped a couple of turns of electrician's insulation tape around the neck over the o rings and this allowed me to pull out the mouthpiece a bit more and get the thing to play in C. It does sound better if you use cane reeds. Fuller and more mellow but that might just be me. As for other mouthpieces, I have four soprano mouthpieces. A yamaha, a selmer a rico and a cheap metal one I got from GEAR4Music. They all sound better than the standard mouthpiece but none of them will push onto the neck crook far enough to reach C pitch. All play half a tone to a tone flat. I guess I could shave a bit off the neck crook to put things right but that will be fiddly. Presumably there are other mouthpieces out there that will fit so best you take your Jsax with you to get the correct fit. However, a word of warning. Sax mouthpieces are very expensive starting at around £45 for a budget Yamaha and going right up to hundreds and thousands. The cheap Gear4Music metal one I mentioned earlier cost £45 and it doesn't fit the Jsax. The other limitation is the short one and a half octave range and as for the high G, I've yet to come across anyone who can hit it straight on without a run up from E or F first.

    is saxophone hard to learn?

    • @andrianarisonnjato1667
      @andrianarisonnjato1667 2 роки тому

      not really, but it needs years to get to a certain level. You just need to do a little bit everyday like an hour or so. at least that'w what I do. I learned my saxophone watching youtube channels like "the saxophone academy", "better sax", "McGill sax school"... but the best way to learn is to have a good teacher, a good player. Hope that help 🙌🏽

    Wonderful illustration of differences. I recently bought my JSax and was considering ways to make it sound more..well..sax-like. There is one thing not clear to me in this video: the first mouth-piece is listed as a “Selmer super session 7”. Browsing online music retailers, the options I see do not use numbers. There are Selmer Super Session H, E, F, G out there, but not “7”. Is is somehow about its size? Again, absolute beginner here, so i am sorry if there is something stupid in this question. Thanks

      @andrianarisonnjato1667 2 роки тому

      hey Costi, congrats for your new sax. So I just realized you're so right with the openings symbols they use on the Selmer mouthpiece. But for some reasons I have the number 7* craved on mine and didn't even notice the letter. I will check it later and will tell ya. Cheers for practicing the instrument, we are all in this together.

    hey man, you seem to know *things*. I've been thinking of picking up a jsax as a cheap way of learning sax. I've heard that some of these "mini" saxes have different fingerings and whatnot to a standard sax; is this the case with the jsax?

    • @andrianarisonnjato1667
      @andrianarisonnjato1667 3 роки тому

      hey Owen, thanks for checking. So basically it way easier than an actual saxophone I'd recommend to anyone. here's the fingering chart's PDF, you will see that they're actually similar to the C scale of the sax or clarinets but missing all the altered notes keys so way easier, but the thing is that you only can play in C D F and G if I'm not mistaken . www.nuvoinstrumental.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/jSax_Leaflet_EN.pdf

    This is great! Have you always played the tenor or did you start off with the alto?

    • @andrianarisonnjato1667
      @andrianarisonnjato1667 4 роки тому

      Hi Nina, thanks for passing by, I started to play with the alto five years ago but I just had youtube as a teacher since the place where I am living has no luck to have good teacher or mentor, and I was not very consistent in my practice as well so the result wasn't that great. I bought this tenor saxophone from Adolph Sax in Belgium three years ago and since I haven't played my alto but only this horn. I befriended one of our Facebook group's member that I loved the sound and he was kind enough to video call me and listened to me playing then gave me tips about my embouchure, breathing, etc and that was all during this lock down period, And I personally felt that there was a big change with my sound and even the ease of playing higher register after those little correction with that friend and I'm grateful. I think anybody can do so. let me know if you have any other questions.
