    • @DrCST
      @DrCST 24 дні тому

      Can be really variable - from formal wear to relaxed! If you can, looking at conference photos from previous years can help see what people are wearing. In general, I tend to wear comfortable trousers/skirt, usually shoes or more formal trainer-type, a non logo top and always carry a blazer/jacket (smart and good for air-con rooms)! I also think that as long as I am neat and tidy, than the science I am sharing is the most important bit 😊

    University positions like these vary widely from region to region, and also if it’s a public university or a private one. Here in the Pacific Northwest, a lecturer is literally just that: you come in and do lectures. You’re part of an instructional team. And you usually only have a Masters degree. So interesting how that is different in the UK! Also, in the U.S., if you have more than one Masters degree but haven’t started your PhD or Ed yet, but you’re teaching in Higher Ed, you’re called a professor. If you have your PhD or Ed, you’re called a Dr.

    Thanks for the video. A well-planned semester is crucial for a university academic staff member. Effective time management ensures that teaching responsibilities, research projects, administrative duties, and personal commitments are balanced. Careful planning helps to prevent burnout, maintain a high quality of work, and meet deadlines. By organizing tasks and setting realistic goals, academic staff can optimize their productivity and contribute effectively to the university's mission. Great video as usual, Greetings 😍

Then the most incredible thing happened, as soon as I started the training session there was zero anxiety. I used your technique of laying out the plan for the training session at the beginning of the training. Also used video to give myself a bit of a gap to refocus my thoughts and keep the class engaged. It was amazing, I can't describe the feeling of relief and elation I had after the first training session. Now that I know I can do it without anxiety I can start focusing on the quality of my lessons. Once again thank you for your wonderful video and the support. The world needs more people like you 😀

    Keep in mind to demand the appropriate position where necessary. It's not that rare, that some professors want the first author position despite not contributing anything besides their existence. I am very adamant to demand first authorship where applicable and even go as far as outright refusing any authorship to professors who didn't even do any supervision work. Don't care who you are, whether or not I work for you or whatever. If you want to be on a paper, you better contribute. To my surprise, I never had much discussions about it. Just recently we had an undergraduate do all the work, me supervising the work and professor merely supervising my supervision. I swapped the positions of the authors around for her to be first author, me being second and him being last with the remark that if he doesn't like it, he's free to completely delete his name off the paper. No objections, it was submitted with my suggested order.

When I did my PhD I only taught on one class - as I wanted to balance the time between teaching and my own research. At our university the Director of Learning and Teaching organises the teaching allocation and we have a separate academic who coordinates the teaching the PostDocs do - if you have similar you could ask them about more teaching? Hi, I commented on one of your other videos (I love your work, by the way). My master's degree is in Law, AI and New Technologies (LLM (the degree, not Large Language Models)). In my law school, they do not want students using any kind of AI to complete their work due to the risk of plagiarism. I'm sure you understand that within the law, both academic and industry, integrity is, first and foremost, a top priority. In my free time, I researched AI detection tools such as the one built into TurnItIn, and while it gives an indication of how much of the content is written by AI, it can actually be false. For example, OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT) developed and released their own AI detection tool. A week later, it was withdrawn from the market due to inaccuracies in identifying AI-generated content. My theory is that a Generative AI system such as ChatGPT needs training data to learn and create the content, and this data is originally human-generated. This means that the AI is creating its content based on human-generated sources, which results in the AI content being indistinguishable from humans. While a lecturer may know for certain that the assessment paper is created by AI, the student copied and pasted it into a Word document and submitted it, proving it is impossible. This is why I am studying for a PhD in the best way to integrate AI into legal education. I am happy to discuss this further with you in detail if you would like. Let me know.

  • @DrJay_PhD
    @DrJay_PhD 3 місяці тому

    Hi, I'm due to start my PhD in Law & AI. It's a multidiscipline exploring the best use and integration of artificial intelligence in legal education to prepare students for an AI-driven legal career. I was wondering if you had any 'early academic career' advice, or maybe you have already made a video on it?

    • @DrCST
      @DrCST 3 місяці тому

      Hi - congratulations on starting the PhD soon 😃 Your research topic sounds really interesting. I did a podcast series chatting to other researchers who use AI - including education and legal topics. Just in case you fancy listen, it is on Spotify "Surrey Speaks, Will AI...?" 😀 I've made a few earlier career early videos, but not one on how to 'start' the PhD research journey. Fab idea for a video, I will add it to the list - thank you! In the meantime this one is about the PhD review process ua-cam.com/video/GGWsAT6r1l8/v-deo.htmlsi=d2Q7ELrYu8EhDIpB
