Welcome! I’m Justin, an outdoor educator working on a curriculum of resilience skills, recognizing the modern world is teetering on unsustainable foundations, and that there may not be any politically feasible answers. My "collapse curriculum" is a robust guide for those who seek to not only revel in the splendor of the outdoors but also to be adeptly prepared for our unsteady future.
These skills represent a cultural paradigm shift. If we are ever going to have a society where we don’t rely on toxic industry, it will require that we have the skills, mutual aid and self-reliant culture to sustain us. If we want to really build this new culture, it needs its people to know these skills intimately. I hope that’s why you’ll join me in working on creating this culture together.

CAMPING in an Oregon Forest - REACTION, Terrain Analysis - Episode 1 Siuslaw
The Siuslaw forest in Oregon is a vast expanse of public lands, with absurd amounts of recreation opportunities, including camping, hiking and fishing. I begin my extended journey into this area of the world with this first episode, with an initial assessment, aka terrain analysis. This is part of what I often discuss in my Collapse Curriculum about situational awareness. It is vital to understand the state of things around you. What are the conditions of the environment, what resources are available, what routes of navigation are options? Watch along and enjoy this beautiful place while we discuss crucial skillsets for both outdoor enjoyment and collapse awareness.

11:05 pack a small compact umbrella for instant shade! Specially in places with no trees. 💚
Nice job. Just a note, those are fir trees, not pine trees.
@@lbfuller5013 I’m not a biologist for sure, so I appreciate the feedback. I was operating on the assumption (perhaps erroneously) that all trees in the Pinaceae family are colloquially referred to as the pine family, including many of the well-known conifers such as cedars, firs, hemlocks, piñons, larches, pines and spruces. Doug firs are not in the pinus genus though for sure. Thanks
Been up working that area the last few months, can be some gnarly terrain.
What a commute though. I’m jealous.
@@justmcaffeeups and downs. Driving from east of salem to Hebo everyday gets old. Lol
They're just embezzling tax payer dollars through layers of shell corps. Otherwise, if they were serious about climate doom, the Left would be moderates on every other issue to get more votes. It is a scam.
I don’t follow that logic. Climate change has nothing to do with the left btw. That’s all part of the scam that is all American politics. The government (and all politicians) aren’t going to make your life better. Anthropomorphic climate change is a verifiable scientific reality whether you like it or not. Or stay on the coast of Florida for all I care.

Great video and some really nice tips. What is the name/brand of that tarp? I would also like to have a tyarp with that many straps and those in the middle, I've never seen that many on a tarp before.
That’s a DD Hammocks DD Tarp - 3x3. It came highly recommended for its durability.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Nice. The setups are good but for the knots I prefer - ridgeline: tying a loop and using a toggle at one end and trucker's hitch on the other, tarp connection: pretied prusik knots. What is the song at the beginning?
Thanks for the comment. There are some creative ways to do it, and the prusiks are great. I wanted to give people what I thought were the most accessible or easiest knots to start with. Song is "As Loch Awe Weeps" by Deskant
@@justmcaffee Thank you!
You are not swinging that ax correctly bro. You going to take your leg out? Keep that up. Man, I wish I was out there with you though.
What you mean? The log underneath prevents the axe from hitting my leg.
@@justmcaffee there's this guy I watch. Who chopped wood on his videos? He explains it better but I think it's like the third chop. If you watch the video right on the edge of that log and the way you're swinging the ax you're going to hurt yourself.
@gavinmcaffee5048 the third one was a little on the edge.
@@gavinmcaffee5048 plus maybe swing down more by the legs instead of hunched over

It's so depressing to see habitat everywhere being utterly destroyed.
No first Aid ? nice set up
Shemaugh and duck tape... what else do you need?! LOL. I had it right there and forgot to include it. It's on the item list though. The main thing was just demonstrating how to pack it.
Hello from Costa Rica. Well done video, you covered the basics well. I just found you through Twitter X and I am very interested in your Collapse Curriculum. Thank you for taking the time work on this important topic.
Much appreciated. More coming soon.

Thank you much! Really enjoyed this day and creating something from the experience. There is something truly magic about the ocean.
What kind of pack? Looks like a Veshmashok.
Yes, bought it for $20 a while back.
На сколько нужно быть тупым, чтобы не понимать этого автоматически😮
Cool song!
Oh, I see. Splitting a log. A bit like splitting the atom, except for morons who think they have discovered something
Bigger isn't always better
Definitely
Justin you are a dead eye with that axe. Liked your explanation of the axe heads, narrow for cutting and thicker for splitting.
Thank you. The lighter felling axe with that handle that curves out at the end is nice for accuracy. The curved handle helps the balance of the head and keeps you on target. Not all axes are balanced right. That’s a Collins axe from the 90s.
what name of that desert tree?
It's a Joshua tree.
I thought it was supposed to rain like hell in a monsoon.
Yo Justin, thank you for bearing witness so truly, piercingly, beautifully.
😊 Many thanks!
Deep peace ✌️
Wow. Powerfully done. Bravo Justin and Enzo.
Many thanks, Max!
Stunning Heartbreaking, but very beautiful
Thank you. 🙏

Human chronic stupidity will be our downfall, and americans are leading the way.
Kimmel emasculating himself being ordered to shout ''Black Lives Matter!'' at the Golden Globes was one of the most pathetic things I have ever seen.
Las vegas returns more water to Lake Mead than any other water user. 80% of the water that leaves lake mead goes to farming.
Correct. The question isn’t whether Vegas is using the water, the question is do we have enough water for 1 million more people?
@@justmcaffee More grass needs ripped out mandatory. There is more space past Boulder Highway. It would be nice if they stopped all building. Property prices would sure skyrocket. Wouldn't hurt my feelings.
@@keithanderson6166 my major reason for posting this was because of the huge area they want to expand into south of Vegas. Full vid: ua-cam.com/video/9k3WxUMzRps/v-deo.html
People destroy everything. Nothing will change it!
Specifically the “civilized” people. Humans did pretty well living in balance with nature for hundreds of thousands of years before the farmers and settlers came.
Why in hell would someone talked to Kimmel about this.
That’s one of the interesting things about Maher. He talks to anyone. And one of his recurrent themes is that the problem with politics today is that people don’t talk to each other outside their tribe.
@@justmcaffee I understand, but discussing the future of humanity with Kimmel...really? "It's like a Martian talking to a Fungo"
@@mtrithart lol, Maher, stoned, loves his own voice. 🤣
Look at the lake being 25% full.

Im visiting next month!!
Living in Vegas while being able to get away to this beautiful scenery with peace and quiet and nobody around for miles is heaven. Nice one.
People don’t realize the value of the deserts. They think of them as wastelands that can be discarded. This needs to be talked about more.
I get it. Anything can happen but you realize that people have been saying the end of the world is coming since the beginning of people?
Have humans been making things capable of destroying most of the planet since the beginning of humans? Also, I’m not sure this is fact. There are some pretty old stories of doom, but too be fair, many of them were accurate. See Casandra of Troy. Or the fact that most civilizations that have been have collapsed. The only thing that’s changed is the scale.
Yeah because we know that there is an end coming however, no one knows when it's going to happen.
Amazing what you find in odd places
That could almost be a slogan for the Mojave and other deserts. I love the roadrunners, the quail, the hawks and eagles, the kit fox… I could go on and on forever listing the interesting beings out here.
Beautiful work Justin. Thank you for sharing this magical place with us all.
So much appreciate you watching and commenting.
Good work, Justin. Beautiful land, thoughtful commentary. Thank you for doing this <3
Hiya! Thanks for saying that. I am always grateful to know a few people at least appreciate the message. I don’t know how widespread my reach will be, but it needs to be said either way.
Ya need to go up not out. And recycle water. I grew up in the desert her in Baja California sur México.
Las Vegas does recycle water well. As drought gets worse and demand grows on the river system, we just need to recognize the limitations. It’s like it goes against everything we believe to do so. That needs to change.
infinite growth, meet finite planet!
The infinite growth fairy will fill up the lake again soon!
✊🏼
Really nice video. Good info. It just baffles me why they keep pushing people out to an area with no water.
Thank you. Hopefully the conversation will help.
