Cenobamate: Benefits & Risks - Ricardo Morcos
As well as preventing up to 100% of seizures in 20% of those with refractory focal epilepsy, Cenobamate may also (indirectly), positively impact mental health, cognitive function and reduce seizure propagation. Ricardo Morcos shares information on the titration of Cenobamate, how it is not suitable during pregnancy, and the importance of a 1:1 clinician-patient relationship. This is part 2 of 2.
Please note that this is not an endorsement of any particular anti-seizure medication (Cenobamate or any of the others mentioned) and any questions or ideas from a patient or carer must be brought up with one’s neurologist/epileptologist.

Do Autism & Intellectual Disability Come With Epilepsy? - Vaishnav Krishnan
This has been the only pill that’s been able to keep my seizures at bay and I’m so happy to have found it. I take 100mg a day along with Topamax. It does make my anxiety a little high, but I’ll live with that in order to not have seizures. It’s been a blessing honestly. It took a little while to stop everything (as in my non epileptic seizures as well) because I was still having auras too, but that stopped as well. 💜
I tried cenobamate for 6 weeks only. 12.5 mg was fine but when increased to 25mg the irritability, anger and other side effects started.
My son is on this drug he tried 9 combinations before starting this medication. He is a year and 7 months seizure free thanks to this miracle drug?
Thanks Torie.
Another exciting episode - the more anti-seizure medication options the better.
It definitely has worsen my anxiety I had a non epileptic seizure since starting this and I haven't had one since December I guess they are going to claim it untill they can't anymore
Nhs fail me yet again... neurologist started me on 50mg I compared to the leaflet that says 15.5mg I emailed them but trusted the specialist.... didn't get back to me for a week I felt awful!!! I was like a zombie no quality of life compared to when I did have seizures.... turns out they made a mistake... why am I always a mistake of the nhs..... I've been told this will not stop my epilepsy but they want to try reduce my seizures while I wait for surgery..... I wouldn't rather not be on this and have seizures I recover better....
Sorry 12.5mg
I got started on 50mg also. Been told my epilepsy will never fully in control though definitely don't need extra anxiety as I'm trying to fight off non epileptic siezures just now. Glad you are capable for surgery good luck 💜
Gosh, good luck with the surgery!!
This guy Ricardo is so clear and open with information. I wish he was my Neurologist.
Awww!! I shall pass that on! Thank you!
Great video! I tried this 4 years ago with no change in mynl other meds that I got so dizzy (walking into walls) so I refused to keep going and am only on 50mg of it now. In a few weeks I'm going into epilepsy quarries to try it again they have already reduced my clobazam so i now feel more confident this time around👍
Silly question - what is epilepsy quarries?
Thanks for sharing! Fingers crossed it all goes well!!🤞🏻
@@Sydopath It's scotlands Epilepsy Centre. Definitely not a silly Qu. The word 'Quarries' makes me think of a prison 😂
@@TorieRobinsonThanks so much 😊 💜
@@kayleighclark2831 Thanks. Funnily enough I’m from Cathcart, Glasgow. But been living in Bristol for 20 years. Good luck with the meds, it’s hell when you’re dizzy. I had to go to A&E 2 weeks ago when I thought I was going into a tonic-clonic They gave me that Clobazam and a potassium drip, and I was recovered in 2 hours. That’s why I’ve got it prescribed now.
Awesome!
Such a top chap, eh Lesley? Do you have any plans for World Brain Day??

Que interessante! Mal posso esperar para ouvir a Lisa Evju Hauger da EpiCARE, direto da Noruega. Tenho certeza de que ela trará perspectivas fascinantes e informações valiosas. 🌟
I think I do weird breathing apnea stuff during and after my seizures… this is scary. But thank you for sharing this information
Just so you know, it’s “normal”/very common for people’s breathing to be affected in epileptic seizures - especially during tonic-clonic seizures. People’s lips will often go blue - and this isn’t anything to be nervous about (unless the seizure last longer than 5 mins and then an ambulance should be called).
@@TorieRobinson Its common to have breathing apnea during and after a seizure but I shouldn’t be concerned about that or SUDEP unless it’s a long seizure. And I should call EMS as they will be here to help me in about 15 minutes later…? I’ll just ignore everything from this video and patiently wait and hope that I can survive without air until they can get here and transport me to the hospital. Fact: 1 in a 1,000 people die every year of SUDEP Fact: About 10 percent of the population has epilepsy It seems like we’re dismissing a very real risk and serious medical condition. You can’t talk out of both sides of your mouth like that. That is the problem! That is a great example of how epileptics are getting medically gaslighted
What an inspirational group. Love the t-shirt motto!
Ahhh I’m glad you like it Carolyn!! Yes, the group of people I got to meet through the EpiCARE conference were fab!
Brilliant!
Thank you Mark! I hope you found it interesting! Jon was a fab interviewee to work with!
How do you treat a lesion on temporal lobe with surgery. Do you remove the lesion completely, or do you short-circuit it, to render it non conductive? Also, if there is a lesion, does that mean the area is “dead” already?
If it’s identified that the lesion can be removed with minimal risk to the patients’ life, quality of life, or function, then it may be possible to remove it - partly or fully. Each person is different. In some countries the lesion may be removed in the traditional surgical way and sometimes laser ablation could be an option. There is no “short-circuit” available. The sclerosis/lesion shall connect with functional tissue and hence there may be some cognitive functional loss. Sometimes an entire lesion cannot be removed due to the potential impact upon surrounding tissue. I hope that this helps.
@@TorieRobinson That’s a great help. Thanks 👍
My doctor is hugely involved in the gut/brain relationship. Therefor, incorporating black berries, cherries and blueberries have proven to be amazing. They help with constipation and actually release endorphins (more than the brain) and relieve stress and boost confidence. I had a breath test performed by my Gastro doctor to make sure these combinations of fruits fermented in a positive way, as it does not perform well in everyone. Also, a stool sample was performed. I hope this helps.
Congratulations for having something that so helps you!
Thanks for the information. In my case, when I started with my first seizure in 2022, I had frequent forgetfulness every week, so I began my study of what was happening to me. And from 2022 to 2023, more cognitive deterioration appeared without a clear diagnosis. until they forced me to be tested for epilepsy and frontal temporal brain damage. So, imagine my memory, but after so much effort and perseverance I am managing to not lose my memory anymore.
The last point regarding the news 100% spot on. I stopped watching the news during the pandemic. I was glued to the news at the start which led to several seizures due to stress. I get the headlines from my smart speaker and leave it there, has worked so far. I also avoid Question Time, who decided to air that program right before bed?
I can attest that stress plays a big part of my memory issues. It affects my attention, encoding, and retention.Great episode! Looking forward to part 2.
Thank God (and science, lol) I've never had any memory issues because of my epilepsy 20 years after my first seizure when I was a child. On the contrary, I'd say that I have a very good memory better than the average person my age. What I struggled with was the side effects of my medication (depression, anger, anxiety, mood swings). Greetings from Mexico.
Ha! Indeed, we thank science! Gosh, that's brilliant to hear about your great memory - I rarely hear something like this in the epilepsy sphere - I'll remember it! I hope that you're doing ok now? Greetings from the UK!
My dad is 79 years old and has had status epilepticus seizures for 4 weeks. He has been intubated and given all types of seizure medicine along with ivig meds. He currently is on a ventilator and has not responded to stimuli. My question is how much damage has been done to his brain function?
What if you have post menopause?
This is something to ask your neurologist about - everyone is different.
Yes I will mention this. He is a man who may not know about it.
We were just talking about this in our support group this evening.
Gosh! Well, stress and anxiety are so common amongst us lot, aren’t they. And then being a seizure trigger too - argh!
I liked this episode. Great job, Torie.
I believe in a pattern also. I go 7 days without focal seizures then have 2 to 3 days of clusters. After the clusters I go another 7 days without!
Is the pattern annoying...or kind of "useful" in predicting things/managing your life around things a little, Lesley?
Great subject and a very clear delivery I’m 59, been having seizures for 8 years, and I’m not convinced that the neurologist has pinned down the cause. I’m on meds, but still have breakthrough absences and auras. There seems to be a cyclical pattern to this. I have kept a daily diary for 7 years, and I go 2 - 4 weeks perfectly ok, then have 4 - 7 day episodes of constant auras, anxiety and absences. Then it disappears overnight, till the next time. I really do feel there is a reason for this pattern, but Doc doesn’t want to discuss the possibilities.
To help towards these kinds of research is why i have registered through the Epilepsy Society here in the UK to donate my brain to research. If it will help with future research then that makes me happy
That's wonderful!
My memory is to bad because of epilepsy..i forget everything because of this im in depression 😢
I once had a home video EEG. Amazing stuff!
Indeed, Carolyn! I wonder how its analysis may change if carried out today!
...and we keep moving forward, just brilliant, thanks Torie :)

My baby twin nieces suffered severe seizures soon after birth (grin2b genetic mutation). After a year of pushing the doctors towards keto, they started and the effect was unbelievably quick. Ha!
Ick.. I've been stuck on meds since i was 11 years old. Recently diagnosed with ADHD and with the USA economy and housing crisis i find it has always been easier to live overseas with less stress. Working less hours per week and doing something i enjoy.
Glad to hear that you're able to escape the rat race!
Any treatment available?
I'm a retired Internist, and I also have epilepsy. My seizures are intractable, and I went under the seizure surgery. My seizures were not completely controlled, but it helped keep them at bay for 20 years, but they returned. Now I'm back on multiple meds, age 65, and significant memory loss, but the surgery definitely helped me practice for the bulk of my life. I'm sure the surgery is much better than it was in 1986!! Nice video.!!
Thank you Steven! I do hope that you are getting support to get on with things?!
