When I go abroad, I've managed to convince my doctor give me scripts early. I then split up my meds: purse, bag, suitcase, friends have some too. Teach your kids how to research their options for when things out of plan. ❤
Hi. I somehow disagree with Dr. Manuel Toledo. I am from São Paulo, Brazil and here we have all the AEDs options available in Europe and US. Being also a European citizen (French and German) and having lived in Europe and having family there, I tell you that for those with good private health insurance in Brazil, the service here is far better than the one provided in many countries of Europe, such as the Netherlands, France and Portugal. In São Paulo, we have Albert Einstein Hospital and Sirio Libanês Hospital references in Latin America. For example, Albert Einstein Hospital has been ranked as the best hospital in Latin America and the 28th best in the world according to a recent Newsweek ranking. So, if you wish to travel to Brazil, do not worry in case you need good medical assistance.
My mum is worried about me leaving my house never mind abroad 😅
Ohhhh.... 😅
Happy New Year and thank-you. The worst travel experience I ever had was on a ferry before my surgery where I had seizure after seizure.
Gosh. Thank goodness that's in the past, Carolyn!
Thanks for sharing. Lots of good hints and tips. Diolch
Absolute pleasure!
Happy new year Torie. As always I always look forward and enjoy your posts. Keep posting.
Thank you! Happy New Year to you too!
I was chatting to my parents yesterday and my sister had an accident there with a caravan door cutting her finger off but they said it was so hard finding a hospital open to help. Luckily they found one in the end that would help her despite them supposed to be closing
I am very sorry to hear that about your sister. In which city did that happen to your sister? Brazil is a huge country like Australia and US. For those spending some days in a desert beach or small town, the medical assistance is just public and for sure limited But in large cities such as São Paulo, Brasília (the capital), Curitiba, Florianópolis, Rio de Janeiro and many others you are safe. I for example had an accident as a child in the town of my grandfather In France. It was a Sunday, the doctor over there had already many glasses of wine, giving me medication that has put me into coma, being this transferred to a hospital of a larger city. I stayed one week in comma. This has actually been the cause of my epilepsy. And all that happened in France and not in Brazil!!!!
Ive had a seizure on a plane once too which made me too anxious to fly for many years too
But you overcame the fear! Yay!
Thanks for sharing. I went to London and America to epilepsy event and had a seizure at the London airport. Its always important to be prepared.
HI! when is it expected to be approved or available for people to undergo this?
Well, research on average, from lab to patient takes about 10 years. And only a small percentage are approved for use in humans. Let's hope that this treatment gets through all the trials and tribulations!
My brother have exact symptoms and he had been diagnosed with lafora a year back ,we are from india and he is under treatment of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Bangalore, he is going through a lot , we are very hopeful that he he will recover,I just wanted to know whether things will be alright or not
We are so sorry to hear of your brother's diagnosis. Unfortunately, at present, there is no recovery from Lafora. There are, however, some really supportive families/groups at Chelsea's Hope who understand what you may be going through - you may wish to contact/connect with them? Here is their website: chelseashope.org/
why is she an expert?
Great interview, very informative. I've been taking Epilim for 50 years, no one has discussed side effects. I'm researching meds as my Epilim levels have become toxic. I've been on Keppra for the last couple of years but am weaning off due to side effects.
You seem to forget it doesn't just affect the brain. YOU STILL HAVE A BODY and it get into all of it.
Hey, hang on. I was Epilim for twelve years and was past childbearing age but it still turned me into a mess. It was my chemist that told me in the end to get off it. He said, "no one is on this crap anymore." See your doctor and get off it. I was shaking too hard to sign for my script. All my hair had fallen out and I'd gained 53 kg more than doubled my weight in nine months. That was thirty years ago and I'm still not right.
Rats don't have mental delay and drug companies don't care what their drugs do as long as the initial result is accomplished.
Nice interview-fascinating
Thank you!
you ought just to talk your language, and let google translate for you because you sound like a baby, dude.
Fascinating!
Isn't it! Just looking at things from another angle holds so many potentials for us!
Great interview. Was really impressed with the research and how easily this complicated material was explained.
Thanks David - that's just how I felt with Glenn too - he's brilliant at translating for us, right?!
This was a great video. Very complicated stuff explained simply.
Glad to hear it, David!
I lost 2 friends to sudep and ive had to be resuscitated twice which is sad. Its one of the many reasons i fundraise for epilepsy charities charities and donating epilepsy information packs to schools and libraries
I love music My grandad taught me classical music on his piano as i grew up and always listened to classic fm on the radio which i love hearing now.
Sounds unique. Ive never associated spiders stopping seizures. If it helps its really interesting.
Thanks for sharing
I've been on Keppra a short time. No "rage" or emotional outbreaks, but man, it makes me feel like I'm on muscle relaxer 24/7. Doctor wants me to pop 1500mg daily, but if I do that, I'll be a vegatable. I won't be able drive or do my job. Splitting a 750mg pill twice daily I feel it the next day! I hate how it feels!
What a sad diagnosis.
❤
so a lot of oversea stem cell clinic uses umbilical cord MSC can help with epilepsy?
Another excellent podcast. Thank you all!
I see people like cartoons while having this meds
Dr. Rubinos is the kind of neurologist we would all be fortunate to have caring for us.
Too true!
I know Neil personally I worked with for a number of years as always Neil is a fantastic guy with a heart of gold. His knowledge and skills and creativity he has always used for the benefit of others what a brilliant man. ❤
Oh gosh, thank you so much for sharing that with us! ❤️
I’m not surprised to hear this research, but I’m so happy that someone is pursuing the connection between seizures and gut microbiome. My son has had seizures for years and I’ve always thought there was something going on with his gut. He gets constipated and has seizures, or he runs straight to the bathroom after a seizure. Thanks for this video. I hope to see more human trials with fecal transplants.
Indeed, all of our body is connected somehow and we need to improve our understanding!
I got a meg test and it do anything
Great interview mate, keep up the good work, love your blog about the response to 'John', and hope you're well too! 🖤
As a epileptic man it's good to hear this is good to hear
Excellent Insight from Christine here at Young Epilepsy and the OPM-MEG project.
Thank you Torie! for having us!! You're the best😛
Absolute pleasure! Looking forward to our next chat!
I wish I could help my son more. We have had no neurologist for the past two years here in Northern Ireland. They left!!!
Hi Jenny, I'm in Northern Ireland. How old is your son? I'm so sorry you and your son have been let down. My daughter is 4 so under pediatric care.
Oh no! Is your son on the list to see another neurologist?
Nice
No wonder people once thought epileptic seizures were a form of demonic possession
Seizure free two years and counting!!!🎉🎉🎉 if I improve my cognitive skills, could I reduce chance of dementia..... further my new seizure free life? Hope this don't sound stupid.
Congratulations! And no, this doesn’t sound stupid! We recommend that you speak directly to your neurologist or epilepsy nurse and ask them this question - they know you and your case and can give you the best advice!
Any studies or anybody have positive results with keto diet with mesial temporal sclerosis epilepsy ? Even if it’s keto and drug combined?
Great description!
So glad you think so, David! Mona loves the whole PPI thing and we can tell, right?!
@EpilepsySparksInsights the automatic door was a great metaphor.
Very informative thanks!
Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure!
Great video with some interesting food for thought
Glad you enjoyed it, Sydopath! It's wonderful to have researchers linking up with the general public more, plus making new discoveries, right?1
❤
I was going to school to become a pro pilot when I had my first seizure and later diagnosed with epilepsy. It ruined my life and career. I tried doing software engineering in the aerospace industry. Nothing can replace flying. And for the record, software engineering is NOT fun for someone who wanted to fly. Some advice for someone who is the same boat I'm in. If you're trying to figure out what to replace your broken pilot dream with, give yourself plenty of time to think about it. Don't rush into things. Take classes, research different professions, interview professionals in those fields to get an idea of what the daily life is like for that career before you jump into it. Also, don't delay grieving. If you need to live with a family member to care for you while you grieve, do it. And don't beat yourself up if you end up grieving for years. It's been 7 years and I'm still grieving. Also, spending time in nature can help a little bit. I do a lot of hiking and the trees, rocks, flowers, waterfalls, etc is peaceful. I won't lie, nature is not a permanent fix, but it's a nice temporary relief from the grieving and depression. Animals help too. They can really sense your sadness and will give lots of love. Just hang in there. I never stopped wanting to fly too. So hold onto the little things and let people know when you need to talk. Also study different subjects. Math, science, engineering, history, etc. Those topics can be grounding when you're feeling down. Art, music, and meditation can be helpful too. Of course all of these things only bring temporary relief, but it's better than no relief at all.
Thank you so much for sharing, @TheJetsons-v2w. I TOTALLY get where you're coming from. - Torie
