Adventure Riding around Colorado. Knocking out passes, trails, and adventures and sharing them through video with others who want to experience Colorado on a adventure bike.
Adv Colorado Loop of Marble and Crested Butte
This is a fun loop that can be started anywhere along the route. I started outside of Paonia, rode to Marble, rode the Lead King Basin trail to Schofield Pass, over to Crested Butte, and back over Kebler Pass. I added in Tiocalli Ridge for some fun singletrack.

Adventuring on my Husqvarna FE501. I started in Grand Junction Colorado, rode the Kokopelli trail to the Top of the World, rode the White Rim Trail, and back to Grand Junction. *All shots were taken with a Dango Design Gripper Mount and Gopro Hero 5 Black*
Lockhart Basin MOAB on a KTM 1090 Adventure R

I decided to give Lockhart Basin a go over Labor Day weekend. Left Denver in the morning, ride down through Durango, and over to the south start of Lockhart Basin. I started LB at 7pm and ride to 10pm before needing to set up camp. I made it quite far and only had another 45 minutes of trail to knock out in the morning.
Imogene Pass from Ouray 2up on a KTM 1090 Adventure R

This was a bit harder than I remembered riding alone on a Husqvarna 501 Rally. There were a couple sections that she walked because I didn’t know where they ended up. I also forgot to turn off traction control and put it into a full hp mode so we struggled with the bike cutting out and losing power on the harder stuff above tree line.

You've got the right idea, so many builds on a 690R involved adding kind of a lotta weight to a bike that isnt real light to start with. Its 100lbs lighter than an 890R. Why get a single and immediately make it into an ADV bike? Add enough stuff and its a 400LB bike. People do the same to a 500EXC, which would never be much of a street bike or ADV bike. My 690R will be kept minimal, but will still be good for going camping with. That rear subframe/gas tank is designed to hold a passenger, so a fairly light bike packing load is no problem with out hanging a heavy side rack back there. Once guys put the big side racks on the tendency is to leave it on all the time. Some of the Rally Kits are 10,000 dollars, and they sell to some degree. They look cool I guess, but the bike ends up being a boat. I might sell my 890R, its a big thing off road, the wrong crash can total it. Picking it up if it falls the wrong way is a real stretch.
You add the same stuff to a 790/890 adv bike as you would a 690 though really, so you are adding additional weight to both bikes. I think soft luggage is all you need on any bike really (it will encourage people to pack light), add a small flyscreen for a bit more wind protection on the highway and away you go. I recently sold my T7 and switched to a 690 and the difference in weight off-road is worth the change alone. I will happily trade a small amount of highway comfort for much better manners offroad.
Spent 500 for a Wings muffler on my 890, it runs absolutely the same, isnt any louder, makes a slightly different noise. 2 lbs lighter on a 470lb bike....................What kind of idiot spends money on that? I guess that would be me.
The mid pipe on the 890 is the issue. Grab the cheapo $40 on eBay or the $200 one. Made both my 790’s sound perfect.
Traded my 1190r for a 690...oh yeah
Were you based in Colorado?
Just traded my 2022 890r for a 2023 690r. Love the 890 but kept getting into off road stuff where I was not comfortable with the weight of the bike. The 690 is a better fit for the type of day trip riding I like to do. More crashable and easier to lift. I did quite a few mods right away-mainly for added durability/dependability and to fit me. I had a 690r from 2009-2014 so already know a lot about the bike. New 2023 is much more refined and I love the quick shifter. Not going with a rally tower as I was able to fit GPS and phone on the stock setup. Only downsides to the bike are less comfy on the highway than the 890 (but way better than the Husky 501 I had) and the weird gear ratios. Could use a lower first gear. May gear it lower but not sure yet.
Keep it up buddy love watching youre vids:)
You made that rocky road look easy. What tank bag is that you have? I like how it sits more left to right than forward to back. Leaves more room to shift body weight forward and back. Never mind, I found it. Nomini Mosko Moto.
That’s the one. Been using it a few months and it works perfect with the big tank. It does restrict forward sitting when really attacking trails, but I’m usually standing when things get harder.
Good to know. Was wondering how it would be 2-up. Might have just helped me make my choice. Have done....hard to believe, but 2-up single track on a DRZ400. Not an adult, but 100 lb son. Was thinking a bagger, but would hate to ride passed dirt roads snd not explore. Just decent dirt roads 2 up is what i would be doing. Like the Idaho BDR. So looks doable. Thanks.
me too, for a gasgas es 700 enduro
I live near the sierras in norcal. That kind of riding is a blast on my plated KTM 350exc-f. We do a lot of tight technical single track at stonyford(if you know, you know). I do plan on getting an 890 though as I can ride to Idaho and still do moderate single track. Simply no way I can own one bike and to both kinds of riding
690 with a rally kit is the perfect motorcycle for any use 👌
I thinking on buying the 690 enduro r 2008 used
Be Aware of the Older Models, ktm has a lot of Problems in the past, they constantly updated/Advanced Their models. I wouldnt Grab anything older than 2014. i own a 2016 ktm 690 enduro r, except for Rocker Arms one of the Best years of the bike
@@just-fun-stuff6753 my problems right now is injection and gear shift
@@brunosousa1977 yeah, those Ktms have Sadly several Problems, they are Not That maintance free as some other bikes, but the fun you get put of them Makes it all good Again in my Opinion
If it is a 2019 get the rottweiler fuel dongle ... fixes twitchy throttle just off idle. Mine is 2019 and I love it.
Good video -- thx for sharing. I look forward next year's video: "I traded my KTM 690 for a 500 EXC".
Maintenance vs weight. I’m torn which to buy myself. A question of Head or Heart making the decision
Best solution: have both 😅
hi broo nace bike y gonna buy it
how much are they? They seem sold out in most places or $800+????? Website says 312 Euros, but that seems low
I have the superior Husqvarna version. How are you doing tubeless on that bike? I’d be interested to know as it makes flat repair much simpler.
Why is the husqvarna superior ? It is the Same bike just in white
@@just-fun-stuff6753 I said that as a joke.
@@BlackdogADV ah okay, was just curious, no offence :)
Finally someone who plans to out this bike to use, most videos around here are not treating the bike for what's it's made for. Love to see more vids.
Why not the 500?
The 690 is a much better fit for that kind of riding. You’ll dig it !
Love Wings exhausts! Got two on my 690 Supeemoto 2008! Great sound
I actually like the factory exhaust.
My 690 came with a blown out loud muffler, ran like $hit.............I like the way it runs with stock muffler. Its so smooth.....and actually sounds decent, not all that quiet. Everyone on the internet is sure you need to spend over 600.00 for a wings muffler. Thats what they want in 2024. 600 + for a frikken muffler.
@@bradsanders6954 yes I agree. The factory welds and material is visually quality as well. The bike only needs an upgraded air filter imo.
I did Flag Mtn last year on my f800gs and I’m also going to downsize to 690. Give up a little on the highway but gain a lot off-road.
Great time! Headed there in two weeks 2 up then circling to Colorado.
how long did it take you to complete the Alpine loop?
I am a new subscriber… and I hope that your next video you go a little more detail on installation because I’m looking forward to what you will be doing with the 690
Best bike out there for the money.Spend a little on it getting it up to spec and you will never look back, enjoy.
If you ride without CAT and open Airbox like to Powersports airbax you should consider to do software on the bike because it will run very lean and possible can damage your bike...if you only do one ope air box or cat delete its runs fine :)
Did you weigh both? Curious how much lighter it actually is.
Oh wait! Frankie, that's you! Yeah, mine came with that same exhaust. Super sweet. Still curious how much weight it cut. Sounds great!
Nicely done, how much experience did you have on the bike 2up prior to this trip?
Thank you to be honest :) first if you do road be careful with tubliss they don’t do well with higher speed , i own in the pass the multiple ktm’s xc-w 300 tpi, 450, 690, last year 790 adv and now 890 adv like you say the 790 adv is a 500 lbs made to do 50/50 you need to pick up the right tool for the job :)
I bought the 2020 KTM ENDURO 690R & upgraded the exhaust with wings, put rally footpegs on, rear fender bag, handlebar bag & a ram mount phone cradle & think that this is a awesome motorcycle for what I bought it for & hopefully the same for you
Will it go on a 2021?
Got a 2018, will this make the bike run cooler? Technical terrain, my bike wants to run on the hot side. Exhaust looks nice, sounds nice, and hopefully make it run cooler👍
mine also runs hot 2 ticks from the top unless im on the road.
I put the wide ratio gearbox in my 2020 690 from Lyndon poskitt racing. Absolutely love it.
Can you explain the benefits of the LPR wr gearbox? I’ve never had issues with my 11, 18, or new 690’s gearbox. A majority of my offroad riding is 2nd/3rd gear. I’ll occasionally ride techy 1st gear “enduro” stuff, but don’t understand how the LPR gearbox would make it better.
@@advdude8194 Lower 1st. Evenly spaced gears ratios. Higher 6th. Better control at lower speeds. Lower revs at highway speeds. Engine lasts longer. And Pulls Better through all gears. It's the ultimate upgrade. The bad is its $2500. And u have to completely disassemble the engine to install. 2 full days of work for me. As I don't work on engines every day. But if can do it you can.
@@rotor676 That definitely sounds like a great modification...but yeah - the price and installation doesn’t fit into what I’d want for this 690. Makes sense for the LP style riders, but the stock gearbox has never held me back from going out and having a blast.
@@rotor676 Hey man, where'd you get it for $2500? Last I checked it was 3500 or so with shipping from the LPR site
@@rotor676 what year is your 690
Cool - sounds like helicopter
"Its super hot and weighs a lot" and that's the way I like me baby........my motorcycles that is ;)
I want to get the 690 Enduro but only 790 Adv R is available in the place that I live. However, there were some owners had reported issues on the 790 Adv R front callipers and that’s why KTM has put a new pair on the latest 890 Adv R, which also unavailable in the KTM dealers near me. Sad for me I can’t get any of the 2 good bikes
Hey dude im in california and i got a 690 enduro as well and i hate the exhaust :D do you have any other maybe louder suggestions than wings?
The The wings with the DB killer out is pretty loud.
It's loud enough, trust me 😁
FMF
The yoshimura pipe sounds louder
Yep, plenty loud & with the quieter baffle in, the larger baffle is very loud and with no baffle your neighbors will get pissed off .
I’m considering getting that same bike , vs. the 890. My dealer in Ohio is temporarily out of both. Looking forward to what you do with it .
Not sure if this is relevant a year later, but ktm powersports in Wauseon keeps them stocked
I will be interested to see what u think about motor and suspension over older 690s
I’ll update you once I get some hard riding in
Me Too
Dude .. I love my ktm 690!! Yeah, just swap the clutch slave ASAP.. it will fail. Love the dongle .. easy plug and play. Exhaust .. I love the wings. Everything else is amazing. I also went down a tooth in the front, feels great on trail. Have fun and congrats.
I plan on the clutch slave. I rarely use the clutch so I’m curious how long mine will last before I need the Oberon.
@@advdude8194 It's not about distance or usage but about quality control and luck. Some people got stuck after 50 miles out of the dealer. I installed Oberon, don't wait with it one day. It is actually dangerous, no clutch (engaged without a way to disengage it) in the mountains can be death
@@bigman-adv and then Dot 4 leaking into your engine oil can destroy your engine. Happens a lot on these things
@@o0Bananaphone0o it won't destroy the engine if the engine oil is replaced promptly but if someone fixes the clutch slave without changing engine oil and oil filters then yes, prepare for a destroyed engine
clutch slave, registration holder, rear brake leaver, crappy fuel pump, electrical connectors need attention from factory, bolts for fuel tank fail, bolts holding the front fairing near radiator go into radiator on any fall and did they fixed rocker arms? yep nice bike but there is quite a lot wrong with it from factory.
I have often considered a 690 if I was going to own one bike. It has a better ability to do more things well maybe not as good as some purpose built bikes do one particular thing. Did they add more electronics this year?
You’re 100% correct about the 690’s from 2009-2018. I had 2 of those previous versions and they were good at everything outside of extreme stuff. The new 2019+ added a better engine, significantly upgraded suspension, and changed the body work to make it slimmer to feel more like an EXC. But with all things new we get stuck with electronics that will always hold us and the bike back from its raw power. I’m adding a dongle to disable the abs, I’m removing the restrictive parts, and would need a $400 power commanded to be able to tune it all.
@@advdude8194 im about to buy one of these this weekend, what restrictive parts are we talking? I do plan to do a rottweiler intake, power commander and an a new pipe to start.
@@NativeOfTheLand97 those are the restricted parts. I might add the PC from Rottweiler, but I have the Fuel dongle from them for the time being. The exhaust swap didn’t seem to change anything, but I might need the PC once I do the pod exhaust.
@KTMARV 1 is the fuel dongle the same as the intake kit they sell? How does the smog delete work? You need the power commander to tune and use all this stuff?
@KTMARV 1 awesome thank you, i ended up getting my 690 last weekend and ita been a blast so far i wrote all this stuff down and its on my to do list. All said and done whatd it cost? My 690 has the cat in the slip on not sure if ill need the new head pipe immediately
Hi , how about pillon ? Did she feel comfortable on the seat ? I wanna to buy one but I ride mostly with my wife and wondering if she will be comfy on longer trips , cheers
Damn Dude
How was the long distance road comfort? Everything seems to have this bike more for off pavement use. We do a lot of 2up touring on pavement to get to the good stuff.
Awesome video - this and your other ones. I found your videos looking for 1090 content. Currently on a Super Tenere, and looking at trading for either the T700, 790R, or 1090R. My gf and I don't want to loose the two-up comfort and capability of the SuperTen, and seeing as you've now two-up ridden on the 1090R and 790, what are your thoughts on the difference two-up riding?
Nice vid m8 :) Why did you choose the 790 standard over the 790R? Seat height? Oh and especially since you are 2UP, did you miss the adjustable suspension setup which the 790R would have offered? I am currently thinking of picking up one of these 790 as well, but the height of the 790R is kind of a bummer and I honestly do not know if I will ever need the extra suspension & adjustability.
It’s an S with the R suspension. I was able to find a barley used demo S locally for too good of a deal, and also found takeoff R suspension on advrider. I saved a few thousand going this route. Also the S seat is better for 2up and also comes with an extra year of factory warranty. Worked out for my situation. The S in stock form would not have been fun 2up offroad. It it’s much lower to the ground. The engine plate raised 4 inches adding thr R suspension. I’m also not a tall guy at 5’9” and find the R fine to ride around. I’ve still yet to even drop it due to its height/weight. I’ve only dropped it doing donuts in the sand 😂 The R is 100% manageable by anyone after a couple rides. And if not the R Xplors can be lowered. I lowered the Xplors on my 501 for ~$300 sourcing my own parts and doing most the work myself. I thought I was going to lower the R, but I’m beyond amazed with how easy it is to manage.
Nice compilation of trails. I always forget about the Lasalle Loop. My wife won't even ride on pavement anymore. Kudos on riding this 2Up.
La Sal loop was perfect for 2up. I won’t ever ride Chicken Corners 2up again as it was very slow going.
@@advdude8194hi, how many kilometres have you done on 790 adv without problems?
