In this video, I’m speaking with Randy Vawdrey, a nurse practitioner and brain health expert about dementia treatment and prevention, with a focus on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and lifestyle interventions. We discuss when it might be too late to treat dementia, how to slow its progression or even reverse certain aspects, and the best interventions available today.
Randy also shares compelling patient stories, including how 100 HBOT sessions transformed one life, the critical role of blood sugar control, and how to create effective treatment protocols. Together, we’ll uncover practical prevention strategies and explore why, in the 21st century, having dementia or not might be a matter of choice.

      Mask or cannula is a matter of preference as they deliver about the same amount of oxygen

    Ive been very stressed in 2024. A lot of good stress because i love my job...im a musician...but its just too much. I play 200 shows a year on average and i do all booking, event planning, band management, etc plus performing. I work a lot of hours. Ive been so sick recently...for 3 months now. Spring, summer, and early fall 2024 i was practically living normally. Felt not sick. I still felt a fear of PEM striking at any moment but i did well. I thought maybe i had beat long covid. It was over. I started exercising formally again in September when i found out i had pre-diabetes. I was swimming at the pool and doing aqua aerobics. After a month i started getting dizzy and then i slowly descended into horrible illness. It was body wide painful inflammation. ANS dysfunction. I would stop breathing in my sleep and the choking would wake me up. My blood ox levels were lower than whats normal. My face was paler than ive ever seen it in my life. I looked like a ghost. I had POTS symptoms and terrible fatigue. I had to lay down all the time or else i was short of breath and very weak. As soon as those symptoms resolved i got slammed with brain inflammation. Started with migraine headaches that effected my vision. Then it turned into brain numbness that makes me feel stupid. Cognitive impairment and memory loss. After that subsided i got the most severe depression and anxiety ive ever had. It was chemical. Brain chemicals were off. There was no reason for me to feel depressed or anxious. But i wanted to die and i felt like i wanted to crawl out of my skin with anxiety. I then realized this was long covid doing this to my brain. Around the time of these brain symptoms, i woke up one day with a crippled back. I literally have never had lower back pain in my entire life. Im extremely flexible and have never had low back pain. But i woke up and my back felt crooked. It hurt. I felt like it was out of alignment. Ive been to therapeutic massage therapist, chiropractic care like 8 times, and nothing was helping and it was getting worse. I could barely walk a few days in row. It was stabbing pain and my back and legs felt like they weren’t functioning properly. Steroids helped but ive had 1 steroid shot and 2 rounds of the pills. Today was my last pill. I feel partially crippled. To put on my socks and pants and shoes in the morning ive cried, yelled, hollered, prayed. My back feels like its cracking all the time. It feels stiff, weak, and nerve pain. It feels like its all radiating from my spine. I tell all my doctors its long covid. My spine is swollen. I could feel my brain was and still is swolen. The brain and spine are actually 1 organ not 2. Neuroinflammation, yall. I feel like i know more than my doctors. Sometimes i move around, and it loosens up a bit and feels a bit better. But somethines moving around just tires it and aggrivates it and flares up the nerve pain and it will be worse the next day. My Naturopathic Dr recently told me he thinks stress from work is keeping me sick. When i ask my body what it needs, it's told me it needs long deep rest. And at my worst, it tells me it wants to die. But i think it's because it's so tired....it just wants rest. But...i dont have the luxury of not working. I need to make a living. And i love what i do. I love playing music. But my body has been telling me it wants me to quit music for awhile. Im considering a career change but im mad about it. Ive worked so hard to get to where i am musically. And changing careers also takes work. Admittedly ive been a workaholic but ive seen that as the only way to survive and be successful and do a career i love. It requires hard work. If i can manage creating or finding a new low stress career, ill do it for my health. Doing a career you love can still be misery when you're sick. 😢 But im mad about all of this. Our society makes us work ourselves to death, no? Is there another way? Not everyone can have a stress free or even low stress life in this society, no? Is it for the privileged only? Or do i have trauma brain looking at it that way? Or maybe both are true.

      Hi thanks for sharing. Stress plays a huge role in our health, most dr's visits are stress-related indeed. As a society we need to learn how to handle stress. We go to school to learn math, etc., yet one of the main things we need to be learning is how to handle stress. God bless

    You should create a ChatGPT type way of getting an answer to “how many sessions” etc. User puts in their illness/what chamber they have access to/ their goals and it tells us how long etc It should not be this complicated in 2025. Every UA-cam video is just a variety of “there’s no single answer” 🙄

    I agree the thumbnail is very clickbait-y. I greatly appreciate your information and expert knowledge but I think you may be driving away many hcp’s who are sincere seekers of knowledge before they even click on the video. I almost didn’t watch myself. “The cure they hide”? Who are you implying is trying to hide anything? If anything it is a lack of knowledge/education in these areas by primary care providers so keep trying to get the word out and educate more dr’s and app’s about these important topics!! 💕

    Thank you for this information. Would you suggest soft or hard chambers for conditions of the pituitary gland (premature ovarian insufficiency)

    • @hyperbaric
      @hyperbaric 4 дні тому

      When approaching this subject, I recommend starting from the standpoint of the pressure you need. This will ultimately determine the type of chamber that would be most suitable for you: Hardshell chambers can accommodate both high-pressure and mild-pressure protocols, offering greater versatility. However, they tend to be more expensive. Soft chambers, on the other hand, are limited to mild pressure only but may be a more accessible option depending on your needs.

    Yes, I got COVID & Pneumonia on February 17th 2022 & I barely could breathe & made it to the hospital just in time on 20% percent oxygen. I was in ICU for a long time & that was in '2022. I got Lythedema for being laid up for some long & the water I accumulated it's horrible but legs just swollen & now my knees are on a strain & found out I lost 100 percent of My Cartilage in both knees & I gotta have Total Knee Replacement Surgery on both knees. My knees are rubbing bone on bone & I found out about my knees on January '2025. Being a Long COVID Survivor it's been so hard for many days now, I had to get Disability because Im so tired & my doctors said I'm stressed, & I have to take time for myself because if I don't I feel I won't make it. This title implies that dementia can be and should be prevented, because prevention is the best cure. And this is the information that is being hidden from us: we can do so much to prevent dementia, yet, we are not being informed and taught how to do it. Prevention is the best cure

      Your personal emotional experience clouds your judgement. Do we stop trying? If full recovery is not possible in the most advanced stages of dementia, when do we decide who is too far gone? What MoCA score define the best opportunity to intervene? 25/30? 22/30? 10/30? Is 100% reversal the only satisfactory outcome? At time of diagnosis, do we just call hospice? Do you prefer locked doors and antipsychotics? Is an effort to improve quality of life justified? How many people have you followed or treated? Your dogmatism smacks of ignorance. Maybe it’s time to expand your understanding!

    In one of your videos you caution against buying a used chamber from an individual because it could have had an improper repair causing it to be unsafe. I'm just wondering what kinds of things could make a chamber unsafe and what would the worst case failure mode be? Could it explode? It doesn't seem like there would be enough energy to do anything really bad at 2ATA or less. If it leaks it would just require more airflow to maintain pressure so would be inefficient. Thanks for all the good info

    I'd love to know the relationship between oxygen and nitric oxide therapy. I heard something about a study recently that showed that nitricoxide actually raised the level of oxygen in not just the red blood cells and cns cells but in the tissues of the body. This could be something very promising in the field of regenerative medicine?

      Interesting field. Nitric Oxide is a vasodilator and in higher pressures this could be a potential problem

    Hello Docteur Masha. For a long covid relapse ( extrême fatigue as a unique symptom) do you think twice a day 45 minutes in a soft chamber would be as effective than 90 minutes in a row, once a day? And regarding the oxygen debit , is 10L / min ok for a one place soft chamber ? Thanks you so much !

      Hello Anne. I cannot give such an advice over the internet. In my opinion it is important to get a hyperbaric consult with a practitioner who understands how HBOT works before starting it. Some people might do better with twice a day sessions, others with longer sessions, yet others with every other day sessions. It depends on a personal situation, because any therapy is being applied to the person not to the condition they have.

      Thanks a lot Docteur Masha. Since I had good results with 90 minutes sessions last time , I will do the same, at home this time :) I am still considering having an appointement with you in the next future so that I can use my own hyperbaric chamber safely . If I have an appointement with you, can you also help balance hormones with natural hormones for ménopause ? I mean natural progesteron and natural oestradiol , not just plants. Thanks a lot !

    I appreciate your content and have learned a lot through your channel. I read of 2 NFL athletes who have slept in their HBOT to heal from injuries. Obviously that’s way longer than the normal 60-90 minutes. In a soft shell is there research for doing it for hours?

    I am dealing with long COVID/CFS what is the difference between a medical grade hard chamber with 100% oxygen in the chamber without a oxygen mask and the submarine hard chamber with a oxygen mask providing 100% oxygen but regular oxygen in chamber ? Is it basically the same thing if they both at 2 atmospheric pressure ?

    • @hyperbaric
      @hyperbaric 12 днів тому

      The difference is in oxygen delivery system. Chamber pressurized with oxygen delivers 100% oxygen. Masks depending on the mask will deliver 100% or lower depending on the system used

    • @stevenrossen2326
      @stevenrossen2326 12 днів тому

      @ so is the difference enough to spend double the price ? The 100% oxygen locations charge double than the places with an oxygen mask. Thanks for the quick replies :)

    • @hyperbaric
      @hyperbaric 12 днів тому

      @@stevenrossen2326 Not necessarily. It depends on the protocol. If the HBOT protocol calls for 100% O2 only, then either a hood or chambers pressurised with oxygen are the option. But there are not that many conditions that require 100% oxygen vs 90% or 80%.

    "Repair themselves" is not an issue if the owner is technically knowledgeable. In fact hbot system is basically simple, compressor and molecular sieve tubes with all the hoses to be connected.., Oxygen analyzer instrument and pressure gauge.

    • @hyperbaric
      @hyperbaric 12 днів тому

      I disagree with you here. Technically knowledgeable can cut it only if the person is authorised to perform hyperbaric chambers repairs.

      As it stands now pregnancy is a relative contraindication to HBOT.

    That hiking scene made me so mountain sick! 🥹😭 My husband and I used to hike the White Mountains of NH where we live but not since I got sick. Been sick now for almost 4 years!! And that’s without the jabs!! STILL would’ve never gotten them anyway, I probably would’ve… Well, you know. Gez, have you ever heard of the book Safe uses of Cortisol by a Dr. William Jefferies? It’s not a long read and very easy to understand and well written, with numerous case studies that I find quite fascinating. As of this morning I have started what he talks about in the book. Im sure I cannot say here… A lot of these case studies resonates with me for different symptoms I’ve had throughout my life, even before C. Odd things that I just couldn’t quite put my finger on in my early life. I should know within 2 weeks if it’s working. Please, if you’re interested take a look at this book. Wishing you well! ❤
