JESSICA SILVEY & MIYUKI SHINKAI | Echo from the Ancestral Land - Past and Present
Echo from the Ancestral Land - past and present focuses on meaningful encounters and being part of a learning opportunity for viewers. Since the last project in 2014 ‘Mind over Matter’ that Jessica Silvey and Miyuki Shinkai worked on together, they see themselves shifting from their art and craft making to mentoring and teaching community members about how we can engage inner selves and embrace spiritual growth through the creative learning process. Engaging with younger generations to pass their knowledge on has been a focus of their life work. Silvey and Shinkai are conscientiously walking on the path to truth and reconciliation to create unity in the community. Both feel that they are in a strong position to take a leadership role in passing their Indigenous/traditional cultural perspectives and wisdom from ancestral knowledge to the next generations.

A Small Price I lie here on the single mattress in my closet, counting the seconds. I can hear the light bounce of steps to my bedroom, and know, this is not the time, to hide from my girl. I inflate my smile and practise stretching, from this embryonic position I find solace in. I prop myself up and check the tangle of my hair. I haven’t brushed it in three days. Well life isn’t a picnic, I th...

Stunning. Thank you.
Beautiful! I'm related to Harriet Tubman thru one of her brothers.
Wow thank you Denise for this extraordinary display. It's amazing what we can do in times of sorrow and trouble. So happy the underground railway was there when needed.
Congratulations on mounting such an important show during a pandemic Denise. This video is such a gem as well and I’ll be sure to share it. Many of images remind me of home and family. A quilt is a thing of comfort and belonging. And yet there are so many meanings and implications stitched into each quilt. For me it is a call to “check myself” and remember what is beautiful isn’t always born of beauty. What is elegant and simple can be a product of a terrible necessity. Thank-you for this reminder and your teachings.
I’m sorry I wasn’t able to attend in person! Beautiful and educational. Thank-you.
Awesome Denise, congratulations!!! <3
Such an important show. These paintings are incredible, as is the artist.

Sorry we can't see these in the gallery but I really enjoyed this presentation. Fabulous series!
Cindy... love these images. Abstract impressionistic... the combination is amazing. Love to see the evolution of your work. You are blessed with the gift of appreciating beauty and being able to share it with others in your own style. Muchas gracias!
Fantastic work Dexter!
