How I Used the Sicilian Defense to Reach National Master
This is an analysis of my last round game against NM Zachary Bekkedahl from the 2024 Colorado Closed Championship. Despite only needing a draw, I quickly found myself in an unbalanced position. I sacrificed two pawns for active piece compensation. Was I able to hold my nerve in such a crucial last round?

Smyslov Destroys the French Defense in 25 moves | 1954 World Championship vs Botvinnik
Переглядів 2453 місяці тому
In this video I analyze game 9 of the World Championship Match between Vasily Smyslov and Mikhail Botvinnik. Smyslov was regarded as one of the best endgame players of all time, and strove to demonstrate beauty and truth in his games. In the ninth game of the match he faced Botvinnik's well prepared French Defense. After a sharp Winawer Variation, Smyslov got an immediate opening variation. Sti...
Mikhail Tal Smashes the Sicilian | 1965 Candidates Semifinal vs Bent Larsen
Переглядів 4,2 тис.3 місяці тому
In this video I analyze Tal vs Larsen from their 1965 Candidates Semifinal Match. This was the crucial last game of the match, and Tal went all in to try to win the game. A typical Sicilian position with opposite side castling quickly arose. Tal sacrificed a piece for a blistering attack. Could Larsen hold off his fierce attacking opponent? Mikhail Tal's King's Indian Destruction | 1960 World Championship vs Botvinnik
Переглядів 6 тис.4 місяці тому
Today I analyze game 6 of the 1960 World Championship match between Mikhail Tal and Mikhail Botvinnik. This clash of styles couldn't be more stark. Tal is still widely regarded as the greatest intuitive attacker of all time. His opponent was the incredibly solid and fierce "Patriarch of the Soviet Chess School." Tal, seeking an unbalanced game, uses the King's Indian Defense. Tal sacrifices a k...

I played a crazy attacking game... Stockfish called me a moron
Переглядів 1504 місяці тому
This is a game played in the DCC June Tuesdays against Kenzie Moore. Kenzie is a tricky opponent for me, he always finds tactics I'm not expecting. True to form, I blunder early in the middlegame and had to fight back aggressively. Chaos breaks loose on the board, and any mistake from either player could spell disaster. Mikhail Tal drags a HIPPO from the Swamp! | World Chess Champion Analysis (Caro-Kann Defense)

Mikhail Tal is widely regarded as the best attacking player of all time. His brilliant (and sometimes speculative) sacrifices continue to inspire chess players looking to play a beautiful game. In this video I analyze Tal vs Evengi Vasiukov from the USSR Championship in 1965. In his book, Tal recounts a hilarious anecdote that helped him make yet another brilliant sacrifice. I Tried Out Blindfold Chess
Переглядів 304 місяці тому
Today I experimented with blindfold chess on Lichess. Did I completely lose track of the position? "Mouseslip" a horrific blunder? Watch to the end to find out. Blindfold chess is quite challenging, but also and excellent training method. It's also a decent party trick :). How Magnus and I Got Crushed in the Sicilian Kan

This is a game analysis of my last round game against NM Daniel Herman. I play the Sicilian Kan variation and quickly got outplayed in the opening. The next day I found out that Magnus Carlsen also lost a game in the same opening, which made me feel a bit better. Why the Sicilian Hedgehog Is So Dynamic
Переглядів 675 місяців тому
Today I take a look at two games I played in rounds 4 and 5 of the Denver Chess Club Championship. In round 4 against NM Daniel Herman, I got into a classic middlegame imbalance: bishop vs knight. Which minor piece will prove to be stronger? In round 5 I adopt the hedgehog defense, where black strives for the pawn breaks d5 or b5. Thanks for watching!
How I Won the 2024 Denver Chess Club Championship
Переглядів 1405 місяців тому
In this video I take a look a two games I played in the 2024 Denver Chess Club Championship. Both games start out in the Sicilian Defense, but quickly take different paths. In the first game against Forrest Lundstrom, I shove my h pawn and then take control of the dark squares. The game against Ben Deguire turns into an opposite side castling race to attack the king as quickly as possible. Than...
Tense maneuvers in the Semi-Slav | Rapid Chess #4

I open with the queen's pawn and my opponent employs the semi slav defense. After some fighting for control of the central squares, I end with an isolated queen's pawn. Will it be a strength or destined to be blockaded and lost? As both of us get low on time the game becomes very sharp and anything can happen.
Would YOU Be Brave Enough to Beat a Master? | Rapid Chess #3

I face and early queenside pawn storm in the English opening. After some complications my opponent sacrifices his queen to form a mating net around my king! I defend the best I can and the game ends up in a draw. Computer analysis reveals wild variations. Should my opponent have risked everything to play for the win?

Yeah that's a bit tricky. I memorize where the 1 key is, and then lay my eight fingers across the number keys. It's convenient that there are 8 fingers for the 8 files on the chessboard.

Fortunately, the variations are pretty forcing in that position. The emotions were definitely running high though. You better believe I double checked everything about 10 times.

Exactly! 16. Nd5 might not have been the first choice of the engine, but it forced Larsen to make a series of unpleasant decisions, and he immediately erred with 17...f5 and 18...Rf7
