Downtown Special: Kunio-kun's Historical Period Drama! | QUALITY-UP World Record (Switch)
ダウンタウンスペシャルくにおくんの時代劇だよ全員集合 RTA
Here's the story of the River City school play, where Kunio and friends gamble in the chance house, bonk everyone in ancient Japan with a machine-gun wagon, and squeal with fear as every common grunt approaches at the speed of sound.
Slow "Benny & Clyde" clan fight in Ecchu, then a pretty clean run with minor timelosses...until a huge streak of slowdowns due to bad luck near the end. Still a pretty solid run; I would've been satisfied with this run if not for the big losses near the end. More time can be saved with better luck and similar execution. But getting THAT luck, while also having the rest of the luck be at least as good as this run's, is...quite a large ask.
Thank you so much for the initial example, TommyBoi. And thank you for all the great suggestions, willbobsled.

FAQ:
Q - What is Medium Difficulty, Any%?
A - It means "complete the game as quickly as possible on its medium difficulty mode." The runner starts from the beginning of the game and attempts to beat Asajiro (Todou). The run ends when the player loses control upon entering Bunzo's home.
Q - What does "Quality-Up" mean?
A - I am playing this game through the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle, a collection of re-releases on the Switch. Every game featured in the bundle has an Original option, which emulates the original Famicom/NES versions, and a Quality-Up version, which removes the console slowdown and makes various changes for each game. Quality-Up actually changes the story mode in this game, so we have to do an additional gang fight and cutscene! Even with the extra requirements, this game was SO PLAGUED by slowdown on the original console, the Quality-Up speedrun finishes SEVERAL MINUTES faster.
Q - You spelled it "Meduim Difficulty"!!!
A - I know - at the time, it actually was out of my hands; it's how it was spelled on speedrun.com, and the splits data automatically populated from there. I have since become a moderator for the game, and fixed the spelling.
Q - Why don't you hit enemies while they're rolling on the ground?
A - They will never actually die when they're in this state. You can deal damage to them, but only to a certain point - the game only starts reducing characters' secondary HP layer, called Willpower, when they are either fully standing or fully laying down.
Q - What platform are you playing on? Is it emulator?
A - I'm playing on the Quality-Up version of this game supplied on the Nintendo Switch title, "Double Dragon & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle".
Q - What about the thing in the corner of your webcam??
A - Characters from a UA-cam webseries called Diminish.
Q - Why don't you do [insert idea here] instead?
A - Good question! TommyBoi21 was the first to try to lab this game for speed, and he came to a lot of great conclusions. Since, I've added my own strategies, like buying the instant map movement item, collecting the early clans in Kawachi, and many other things. But there may be things still to find! So PLEASE, I would be THRILLED if you try this out for yourself, using any method you want!! Tweet at me with your findings and PBs at @seireasong, and/or message Seirea on speedrun.com!
Q - What's the point of this?
A - Speedrunning is a fun and extremely challenging way of adding replay value to your all-time favorite games, or any game at all! The first time I tried speedrunning River City Ransom EX (GBA) in 2015, no speedruns existed on the official speedrun.com leaderboards, so I had to create the page myself. I left it for years and forgot all about it. Then Redd92 beat my world record, and once I found out, I felt a brand new competitive fire! It motivated me to create entirely new routes for categories in that game, so I could experience new challenges with one of my favorite games ever. It's been indescribable fun, and triumphing over the game like this after it beats you down feels absolutely otherworldly.

God i love this game Wish it got more attention
Happy my algorithm had me stumble across this, always fun to see solid beat 'em up play. Have you tried Fight 'n Rage?
@@IdoMuffin I haven’t! I actually have played VERY few classic beat ‘em ups. I’ve always been obsessed with the Kunio kun/River City series, and mainly stayed within that realm, and played a little bit of some Double Dragons and Battletoads as well.
This game is criminally underrated and overlooked. Its a fantastic beat em up. Now if only that damn milk quest didn't exist..

Jesus that was awesome

what is the best river city ransom game?
Really tough question for me. They’re all so different. And I haven’t played the River City Girls games yet. My favorite is probably River City Ransom EX so far
@@SeireaSong2EX was the first River City game I owned and loved it. RCG2 is definitely my favorite and hope you get into those games soon.
Back when the milk would break in one drop, upon completion of the quest I would punch it off the table before leaving the house. Felt really good to see it shatter in front of William.
everything about that milk quest made me angry.
Remember when as kids we played these games? Instead of just walking/running through the entire level trying to beat it in 6 minutes? Sigh...
Indeed; I’ve been playing this game since I was a toddler. Just hanging out in every room and trying out all the items. Loved it so much, I tried every game in the franchise I could get my hands on. All of it inspired me to become an acrobat and artist, to bask in that feeling the games gave me. But RCR always held a special place in my heart, and I was in an awkward position of wanting to play it more, but having played it so much it didn’t feel as fun anymore. And most other video games haven’t really scratched that same itch. Then speedrunning provided a new challenge for this game, which made it feel special and exciting to me again. Having new goals with the game has given a gift of extending that magic of playing the special game from my childhood again. :)
well 1 tip from my end.. do slam dunks on your own hoops initially (twice on any1 of your loops .. i do that on the 3rd hoop) .. once you get the hoop( after 2 slam junks the hoop detaches) .. take that hoop and throw that on the side you are attaching( now that gives you 4 hoops) .. just keep doing the power shots( once you have 4 hoops the scoring will be bigger than 10 for every power shot) .. i hope I have managed to explain my tip .. its really kool !!!!
great video mate .. thanks for the tips .. I am in love with this game since 1993 .. and i want a newer version where all the 6 baskets could be seen in one screen ( the only thing tht i dont like is that the camera follows the ball and at that time the CPU players attack successfully while we the human players can only do attacking moves randomly hoping to strike them with LUCK element) .. PS: theres a rom hack which changes the language to english .. you can find it easily online

Impressive run indeed. The Kunio Kun community would be proud.
wonderful run, Sei! amazing achievement!
It's awesome to see the love of vintage games is still alive and well!
Like Rayst-Lin (rhymes with waste). And yeah, lots of technical data to this game that shows how surprisingly deep it is. If you play the translated version you can see on the tactics screen exactly what hold A/B does with or without the ball as a command. I found the Showboat to be interesting (the one with both players in the middle of the zone) because no-ball B is "go get a weapon" - not useful for the 30 second 50 point goal but loads of fun for other modes.
Easily one of my favorite videos of all time! 🙂

nice work Cousin :D
I remember doing this once (playing Nekketsu Monogatari EX, I only play the JPN titles... it's a long story) and it was a surprise at the time! My literal reaction was "Shoko, the girl who saved Mami?!", in the JPN version Shoko (Pink) has the ability to transform... well... she tries to. Anyway, she and Hayami Takeshi are the only two characters in the Kunio kun series that can transform (like a Henshin Hero, not transform into their opponent Matsudo style). Lastly, I have access to the debug of Nekketsu Monogatari EX... I paid good money for it but my word is it worth it! (the debug includes a sound test, debug multiplayer vs mode, sprite viewer and face viewer. The debug is part of a release called Downtown Dodgeball Dayo Zenin Shugo. That release features, Downtown Dodgeball, DNM EX debug, Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari FC's pre-release version, Jidaigeki's prototype and DNM EX Parody Ban Special 2007). Here's a fun fact! The game's designers are credited but not in a usual manner. Instead, they appear as enemies in-game! The staff are as follows: Sekimoto (orange frizzy hair from Sakajuku/ Frat Boys) is Hiroyuki "Moqeqe" Sekimoto, Yoshida (grey slick-back low ponytail-style hair from Houryou/ Internationals) is the late great Mitsuhiro Yoshimitsu Yoshida, Oyama (grey hair with shades from Shionzan/ Gamers) is Kei Oyama (who would later work on Double Dragon IV), Ura (parted black hair from Houryou/ Internationals) is Ura (I don't know his full name... soz), whilst he doesn't appear in the regular version of DNM EX, Ishida (short black hair from Hakutaka/ The Mob) is Ishida (I used to remember his name...), Yoko (red slick-back low ponytail-style hair with red glasses from Reiho/ The Plague) is Yoko (I don't mean to sound redundant...! >_<) and lastly whilst not appearing in any version of DNM EX, Yoshimura does appear in Downtown Dodgeball. Collectively they are called the Downtown 7 and they have a company called Miracle Kids! Miracle Kids! were the guys behind several games during the Million era of the Kunio kun series (which lasted until June 1 2015). The game also has a few special thanks as enemies too, Ebinuma (from Hoshino'oka) is Muneki Ebinuma of Double Dragon Advance fame and Han'ya (very short almost balding hair with a big forehead from Numaoka/ Jocks) is Takashi Han'ya who was Million's licenser and former a Technos Japan staff member. Nice re-stand combo against Onizuka/ Otis by the way! Sorry for this massive wall of text! >_< (I'm a massive Kunio kun and Technos fan if you couldn't already tell by my profile pic and I can't help myself from info dumping~)
I HAD NO IDEA THE UNIQUE STANDARD ENEMIES WHERE STAFF STAND-INS AND SPECIAL THANKS. Thank you for giving me something I hadn't ever known. Thank you. The re-stand combos are gigantic for saving time. I always always come back to Kunio game-loving in the end, I can't help myself either
Sorry for spam, but is this video DNM EX 2009. ua-cam.com/play/PLfbRb0UIID2be-uGPJuhptsxRNrAyY2Ey.html&si=q6YB2C_xoHdcY0mW
No see here's the REAL way to beat River City Ransom EX Damageless: Use Acro Circus or Torpedo the entire game.
You’re right. That makes the challenge totally moot because those make you pretty much invincible, so I should’ve stated this “vanilla” category’s rules in the beginning. There’s another video coming and I’ll make sure to cover it then
