    On another video a guy used his EQ in the loop so I tried it. Worked like a charm. The only thing is you can’t go down to quiet, like your Marshall below 1. I took my DSL100H to 6 on Ultra Gain and with my EQ it lowered the volume to probably just below 2. I’m curious if you crank your big tube amp to say 5-7 or so, can you lower the volume to bedroom level? Wondering if this JHS box can lower my volume lower than my 7 band Boss EQ

    • @deltarider99
      @deltarider99 3 місяці тому

      Attenuators are awesome when you’re dealing with an amp that utilizes a lot of power amp distortion, but for these types of high gain amps where the preamp tubes provide most of the distortion, something like the JHS box is a good option. Especially since it’s cheap and may end up solving the issue without having to shell out hundreds (if not thousands) on an attenuator.

    Haven't tried a JB8 yet but I've put an Alnico 8 in a Suhr Aldrich before which has a similar sound to the JB. I'd say this magnet has a lot of that "bark" sound in the midrange. In this video though I liked the mid presence of both the "5" magnets which no doubt cut through the mix. My experience with A2 is they're usually a bit flubby on the low end which you can't really hear in the riffs played, sounds good strumming though. I'd be interested to hear Alnico IV which are know to have a very flat EQ profile

    So if your amp has a master volume is this pointless?

    • @deltarider99
      @deltarider99 5 місяців тому

      Not necessarily! Some master volumes are very very touchy - this allows you a little more fine tuning so you can dial in the exact volume you want. I’d say it really depends on the amp and if it’s jumpy going from low to high volume.

    Question for you (much later, of course): You made about each speaker and about which speaker you liked the most. How did you come to that conclusion? Were you listening to the speaker in the room or did you listen to the mic'ed sound before you came to those conclusions? I ask because I thought the G12h 30 sounded pretty good under the mic when I level-matched things. It's NOT the V30 (which always sounds good) but I thought it did great with the distorted tones (when level-matched against everything else). I'm looking for a complement to my V30s assortment (I have V30s from a late-90s Marshall 4x12 and from a 2001 Mesa 2x12) and I thought the G12h 30 sounded like it would be different but good on it's own. Just curious about your thoughts/methods! Especially with an open-back cab and a different goal in mind (I own/operate/engineer at a recording studio and it sounds like you're trying to have the most fun time you can jamming an amp) the results/impressions can be drastically different. Thanks for any insight you can lend (from a million years ago) and thanks for putting together this video!

    • @deltarider99
      @deltarider99 8 місяців тому

      Hey there! And thanks for the thoughtful comment! To answer your question - my basis came from a mix of the mic'ed up tones in addition to the feel from playing. It's interesting - I'm still using the M65 in the Archon; not that it sounded the absolute best out of all the speakers, but it had the best feel in the room and it pairs really well with a V30 in a sealed box. However - you brought up the G12H30. After the demo, I decided to throw the G12H30 into another amp I had laying around (Blackstar Artist 15), and the results were fantastic - for that amp, it's probably the best speaker I've tried in it. It didn't quite work "in the room" for the Archon, but it's massive sounding in the Blackstar. Especially with fuzz pedals. And just for kicks, I hooked up the Archon and the Blackstar together, and the results were pretty great - best of all worlds!

    • @DontWorryImAPilot
      @DontWorryImAPilot 8 місяців тому

      @@deltarider99 that's super interesting! I've liked the G12H30 in many of the demos I've heard so it doesn't surprise me that you found a home for it. That phenomenon right there is why I have a few speakers that "don't sound great" living in some "lesser respected" cabs. Sometimes they just do something specific and I know that at some point down the line I'm going to find their perfect home and I'll be happy I didn't chuck 'em in the garbage. Have any guitar playing/gear/writing/recording revelations happened in your world since you made this video? Thanks again for doing these initial tests AND for the reply after all this time!

    I have a production jb in a USA charvel so cal and an antiquity jb in an old Ibanez. The guitars are identical in construction and features, except for maple board on one and ebony on another, tone pot on the Ibanez, no tone on the Charvel. The antiquity JB wins, hands down. It has a beautiful smoothness in the midrange compared to the stock JB. The awesome crunch and midrange is still there but I don’t hear the honking, nasal quality to the mids. Harmonics are effortless with the antiquity. It just feels perfectly balanced and not as notchy or boxy as the production model. I was considering trying A2 in the stock one, I like A2. I rotate these guitars for gigs and home playing in different tunings, maybe to make them more identical, I’ll go rough cast 5 which the antiquity has. I use 500k pots in both, I tried a 250 in the Charvel but it was dark , boomy and not as open, even without a tone pot on that guitar. In this video, I liked A2 and roughcast 5 best. I liked stock better than 8 or ua5.

    The JB in my LTD '87 Eclipse NT was borderline raspy and just needed the cheap factory "green chicklet" tone cap replaced with a Mojotone paper&oil of the same value. I chose the Seymour Duncan TB-14 in my HSS guitar and prefer an Orangedrop capacitor with that combo. Every guitar should have specific components that surpress unwanted frequencies and accentuate the ones you prefer. Why guitars don't have more options for the electronics you can get in each model is beyond me?

      It's a great question! You'd connect it in between your guitar and amp - so you'd have your guitar -> cable -> box -> another cable -> amp. However - without an FX loop, you won't get the desired output volume reduction. In front of an amp, all it will do is lower and raise your preamp gain. A neat trick, but won't do what I showed in the video unfortunately.

    Dude ! Seymour Duncan parallel axis on a telecaster 🤘🔥🤘 love that pickup on my Jackson Brandon Ellis 👍 one of the best passive pickups IMO. Gotta pick up this JHS glorified volume pot ! Great video thanks

    Total waste of money. Just send an output signal to your fridge and it will come back cooler than a 99 with flake.

    Killer tones. I just discovered your channel when I was looking at swapping magnets in my pickups.
