KHWCC | Interview with the director of an independent Swiss watchmaking school
Table of contents in the description 📜
KHWCC Is an independent international watchmaking school in Le Locle, Switzerland. Led by Henrik Korpela, contrary to most other watchmaking schools in Switzerland, they teach in English rather than French or German.
Early this November, I asked KHWCC if they would agree to a spontaneous interview and Henrik Korpela, who is the director, main instructor and a watchmaking teacher of 14 years, was kind enough to agree. Henrik is fun to hang out with, but most importantly: very instructive and passionate about teaching. Two of his students have even gone off to teach in WOSTEP.
Join us, while we discuss the school, the studies and get down to the fundamentals of watchmaking.
You might also discover some valuable watchmaking know-how and little nitty-gritty details that you'd never had heard of otherwise.
We discuss subjects like Henrik's career, watchmaking tools, custom watch parts, how Geneva stripes are made and many more.

Guilloché demonstration by Breguet
Переглядів 28 тис.5 років тому
In this video, Guillaume Braud from Breguet demonstrates the use of guillochage to produce the world-famous pattern: Clous de Paris. Clous de Paris is used to produce the symbolic Breguet dials dominant on models such as the Classique 7147. Guilloché is highly valued in the world of watchmaking and reserved to only the finest of the fine watches. Guilloché is an art in which there is truly no r...

Watch by Bovet Music by Schwin Footage by WatchesTV This grand astronomical theater has been presented by BOVET in a Tellurium-Orrery, with the sun represented by the flying tourbillon, whose carriage bridge evokes fiery rays. The striking hemispherical earth rotates on its own axis and shows the hours on a natural 24-hour cycle. Finally, a spherical moon orbits the earth according to the exact...

The Journey Begins

I decided to take concrete steps to delve into the world of watchmaking. Starting off with a trip to Switzerland to find out all there is to know about this craft of crafts. What/who do you want to see in Switzerland?

Переглядів 2,9 тис.6 років тому
Get all the tools from: store.smellofmetal.com/essentials/ Here are the five tools you need to disassemble and reassemble your first movement. Read the article: smellofmetal.com/five-tools-you-need-to-start-watchmaking-at-home/ I recommend getting decent quality tools because they will end up serving you better and longer in this craft.
what can a student expect after a two year program? what kind of money can a new watchmaker expect to make?
Thanksf or sharing!
nice hair
This looks like a straight line engine instead of rose engine. I'm not sure, but just doesn't seem like it has the capability to do pattern turning.
Learn to take a video,
Thanks for the advice but I prefer to learning watchmaking.
I have the brain of a child but... I'm a little confused... why isn't that a "straight line" engine?? Maybe the machine does guilloche and straight line? Or does guilloche include straight line engines?
Hi Braca, I presume you are wondering why its not turned, round lines? I'm no expert either, however perhaps Mister Braud used simplified terminology to keep this simple to understand. Or it could be the the way the machine is set up - to induce straight lines for Clous de Paris, as is commonly used on Breguet watches. I encourage to look further in depth into the matter, as guillechage is a full-blown profession on its' own.
@@smellofmetal i got obsessed with the Clous de Paris last night after watching this... Piaget Reference 908 👍 Took me a while to figure out the term "clous" wasn't "Creux" 🤣🤣
@@smellofmetal i also saw a wizard great an enameled dragon using the guilloche... i thought for sure it was freehand but it was even more amazing to watch him make the whole thing outta modified "sine' waves on the Gui
@@BracaPhoto Piaget Reference 908 is definitely something to look at ! Any link to the sine wave dragon?

As a member of the AWCI in the US, I've met Mr. Korpela. He's a very kind and friendly individual, and very knowledgeable. He teaches occasional classes in restoration here. I'd like to thank him for doing this interview, and sharing his knowledge 👏
is he ever in the pnw?
I love the character and artistic elements of each Rose engine I encounter. I knew what engine turning was, being a jeweler. But I didn't appreciate it fully until recently. Thank you for this series. Greetings from Florida USA 🇺🇲
Suisse guilloché au main.
I want to see the shop that made the rose engine lathe
Interesting topic ruined by shocking videography...
This is amazing, thank you for sharing this
My pleasure
The guy whit the camera is the same who film the extraterrestrial ufo ... Nothing . What price of shit
Fuck yourself, guy.
@@111ark you got my point is all about yourself
I got to do this with the same gentleman in Geneva last December. Fantastic experience.
yes, a nice looking machine, but did he ever explain to you what the other half dozen knobs on this did?, as he only used two in the video, and disappointingly didn't show us how it worked, set up the chuck, or cutters, etc.
To taki ręczny pólautomat.
Musíš rozumět jemu i stroji.
Awesome video!
I would love to be there and do that profession all the time. It's such a satisfying experience. Having Jewelry background and Tool and die maker, that is such an awesome profession.
Simply amazing
Lovely insights into a watchmaking program. Very well done, fascinating viewing!
Thank you Stephen. I also appreciate Henrik's insights and there is definitely a lot of passion for the craft in that building. I encourage you to take some of their courses if you ever have the opportunity. :)
What about the large magnifying glass on the desk?
Hi Kenneth, To be honest, I used it to support a smartphone while filming the rest of the video and made use of the lamp it has built into it. It's not essential, but good light is.
This is a really interesting video. I wish I had the money for this course.
Do you know the prices? 2year course? There´s no information.
Military service great, we have the worlds largest Marine Base next door MCAGCC Twentynine Palms to us here in the California Mojave Desert. Reason for the story is a member leaving the Marines shared he is coming by our home and watch part machining operation small but important to share as he is then off to the north from us to the State of Washington a great and well known watchmakers school awaits him for watchmaker carrier training and such. Thank you for sharing your video. 5 nice tools and remember starting out 2 decades ago with similar tools all used back then.
We are interested subscribed as newbies and hope to learn great things. Micro-machining is what we love and watches is what we work on so happy to have this place to come see others and learn from you all. We love our American maker RGM and this interview was well done we thank you so much for this.
Really cool to have made this interview of M. Korpela ! You definitely deserve more audience 😉✌️
That’s good to hear, Tohr. Thanks, and feel free to let me know what else you want to see. ✨⚙️✌️
Keep up the good work man!!! I'm getting into watchmaking too , and your video is quite helpful, with the recomended movements and all. ( A piece of advice: If you want to gain experience and don't want to break new movements, try to get some scrapped movements or vintage watches...they are dime a dozen on ebay and they are a lot of fun!)
Thank you!
